Running on frozen water is faster than swimming in it.

Plus you can breathe whenever you want too.

And you only need a windbreaker not a wet suit.

Most of us look better without a swim cap on.

Don'tcha just love cheery people who are running in 62 degree weather?

I prefer training outside but I love having a membership to a place where I can train all three sports indoors and never miss a training session.

Purchased a Javelin Varese Tri bike today. Hope it fits. Hope I go faster on it. I see some say they go slower on the tri bikes.

Should be here in a week. LBS doesnt sell tri bikes. Hope they can at least route the cables and install the handlebars and adjust the deraillers.

Probably need new shoes. Definately have to buy pedals. Current pedals and shoes are Shimano Spd Mountain bike on my road bike. Becuase I feel better running thru transition on mtn bike shoes. Should be interesting.

ohhhh... nice bike! 10-speed campy, Oval A700. Sweet ride. It might take some time for your muscles to adapt to the new position, but it definitely shouldn't make you slower.

A great key to consistency right there. And just being consistent is a key whether you want to finish a tri or land on the podium.

I hate it when the wind blows 30 mph. If you are camping on the beach, it makes it hard to sleep when your tent is moving at 15 mph.

The trip was canceled. My son and I were pretty disappointed.  We did go swimming anyway. We have to cross the Medina river to get home, we had our stuff with us so we swam for 1.5 hours. Water about 75-80, air temp 90. It was perfect. I worked on getting comfortable in the water.  The water is really deep and I got out just once to get a drink so I had to depend on treading water or back floating. I had a little bit of the ow panic but kept at it until I felt really comfortable.  So much better than the chlorine in the pool. My son and his friends go almost everyday after school.  I am going to go to the river for one of my swims per week if I can without embarrassing my kid. I went running after at the city park 2 easy sub 10 minute miles on the shady running path.  Life is good!

I have a minisprint next Sunday, then  three weekends until another minisprint which is one week before my A sprint, the Danskin (so... 5 weeks away).  I want to go fast on my two minisprints and to really cut my time from last year's Danskin.  I'm going to spend some time later today looking at my training plan.  Should I wait to worry about increasing the distance later? My goal is the olympic in October (my next A race) but I almost feel like it's too early to worry about that. Maybe I should move the Olympic up? Any ideas? I'll ask some specific questions after I look at times and schedule later.

Thanks!

Bummer about the trip, but sounds like you had a good time in the river anyway.

Definitely not too early to start planning for an October race. I'm not sure what your plan looks like but my email is in my profile if you want to send it to me. Depends on your goals too. Let me know if you have a specific question, but in general I'd say increasing distance is probably a good idea. Looking at your logs, I would recommend adding a little more to each of your runs. You seem to rotate your emphasis different weeks too - nothing wrong with that - if you're doing that because of time constraints I might suggest combining some more workouts. You have the endurance down for the bike & swim, so you might consider some tempo efforts there if you're wanting to get faster.

Haven't been riding bike with clips for very long, and was wondering if a shoe is made that you can unclip and walk on.

Have some friends that live on the lake and like to visit after my ride but don't really like being barefoot

What sort of pedals? If they're SPD, shimano makes a nice walkable shoe: http://www.rei.com/product/748415

Nope, sorry. Not that I know of (doesn't mean they don't exist). The shimano/spd combo above is like walking on a regular shoe - the cleats are recessed so they don't even touch the ground. Wife & I use them on the tandem when we go for a coffee/pastry ride.

I use Shimano mountain bike shoes and pedals with the spd cleats. The same ones lrobb was talking about.

They are great for running through transitions, and walking around coffee shops or 7-11 to buy water or food on your long rides.

They are not something you would wear for hours after a long ride to just hang out with your friends though.

The cleats are recessed, but you could still damage hardwood floors in them as sometimes the cleat will hit the ground as you walk. And if you are outdoors you could get grass in dirt in them, which would make for a less stable connection between shoe and pedal the next time you ride.

they don't make them much easier to walk in but you can get covers for the Look cleats. They are $12 at my LBS. I am going to look online and pick some up they will fit in my bike bag. You probably already knew that but I am a road shoe rookie and I was stoked to find these. Not so impressed that my pedals didn't come with them as some others do.

Then again you could always duck tape some Crocs to your butt.

Sorry my Oklahoma engineering came out had to figure out a way to get duct tape in the solution.

Thanks Lee,

As I was running today I laughed when I thought, maybe I've been subconsciously hoping no one will notice that I'm not running as much as I should!

I upped the run today to 5 miles. It seemed easy and then my knee started hurting.  I could have gone further but thought I'd better stop.  I'm icing it now.  It seemed to get better when I would stop and stretch. (foot to butt knee bent) It may just be tight. I hope.

I'll send you my plan, and some questions about possibly changing to an intermediate oly plan once school is out.  I'm going to bed!

Today while riding my bike I passed another plus sized cycler of similar size to me. He was donning his form fitting cycling clothing as was I.

I realized that there is very little that is appealing about seeing men of our size in this ridiculous get up designed for those who have much nice forms to fit. I, for a spit second, felt a bit self conscious. But as you all will learn about me this did not last long.

I decided after having a image of this other larger than average cycler and myself setting down at McDonald's and wolfing down a couple of Quarter pounder value meals, that there are many less appealing things that you could watch two men of girth do.

So if you pass me on the trail an are blinded by the incredible amount of hi-viz performance material that is my cycling jersey, realize that there are worse things that you could be witnessing me do. And if only in you mind think "Ride on large fellow and may your jersey become loose."

Just a few of the ridiculous ramblings of the one they call "Tiny"

Subject: Stretching & Strengthening

Got some nagging knee troubles (Les, lrobb, ...)?

Top 6 stretching exercises:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=BaDXNjFjjnU

Top 4 exercises for hips & glutes:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=MTJPb4-YOmc

A lot of knee problems start in the hip or the foot. In my opinion it's good to do some stretching and strengthening to hopefully ward off problems. What I like about these exercises is 1) they don't take a lot of time, 2) you don't need any specialized equipment to do them, except for some surgical tubing and 3) they don't affect the quality of my swim/bike/run workouts.

Of course, this starts when there isn't any pain. Remember R.I.C.E. when you are in pain: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

I've gotten in the habit of ice after every hard run or bike. Just grab the ice pack, wrap it around 1 knee for 15 minutes, then switch the ice pack in it and put it on the other knee for 15 minutes (I'm a member of the gold club for ITB: both knees, sometimes at the same time). My newest problem area is my hip (also ITB), so I wrap the ice pack around there now too.

I probably could've avoided my years of ITB had I done a proper stretch/strength routine like the one outlined above.

The book CHI running was useful to me for technique and avioding injury - I've never been a runner and just started this past fall, I resemble a tortoise (in shape and speed) but I haven't had any injuries.

Weight loss update 301lbs this morning that makes roughly 35-40 lbs since Jan 1.

After reaching my first goal Sub 300 lbs. I will pursue my next goal of Bike + Rider Sub 300 which is about -20 lbs I figured that is a good next step.

My wife is also on the way down. Not that she needs it because she is totally HOT. But I am glad she is doing it to help me out. She is down about 14 lbs since Jan 1.

She going to run the North East MD sprint with me. So I have an awesome training partner.

Great job Tiny, keep up the good work.  Having traveled the same road as you are now I know where you are at and where you have come from.  Getting out of the 3's will be a huge moment I suspect.  My heaviest (that I know of) was 365.

Well, I have been going to the pool regularly and thankfully it is getting better, I know longer feel or look like a drunken wiener dog tryng to make it to the other end of the pool.  I still have a lot of work to do before I am comfortable, but it is getting better.  I just received my Total Immersion DVD and the Triathlon Swimming made easy book, so hopefully those will help me progress too.

I don't get a chance to post as often as I would like and have also not entered anything in my training logs, but I do try to read the forums everyday and have continued to get good info from everyone.

Keep up the good work all, and happy training.
