Just wanted to say congrats to our Pitt people here, glad I didn't talk any smack - live in Tampa and finished up at USF, really thought we would win easily last night since we were at home, but ooh well, Go Rays Anyway!

And Go Headless Horsemen - Run Run Run.

 Mike

Finished wathcing the game this morning. Great start for a Friday!!!

That second quarter just killed USF's chances. Pitt held the ball for ~12min of game clock. Hard for USF to get momentum w/o the ball.

Splain how when Pitt faked the punt, had a false start penalty and USF was able to decline? Isn't the ball dead when you false start and the defense HAS no choice but to accept?

Go Rays! Even though I'm a New Englander now, I'd like to see them get there!

I'll be doing my normal daily 8-10 miles in a few hours. I'm trying to decide what route to run. Not a day to push the pace as I'll be racing both Saturday and Sunday.

Good luck this weekend...no taper?

No.  We'll pass.  (Bad word choice.  I believe I just opened up a can of words).  I'm sure you'd like to be remembered on this site for having other positive qualities.

At this point you just have to trust in your training. Believe in that and you will do fine.

The most important thing you can control on raceday is your mindset. If you are positive and excited, you'll do well. Nervous and negative...not so much. Just have fun with it. That's what I did on Sunday and had one of my best races.

Well this is only my 2nd 10K. I finished my last one in 1:20 and I'd like to beat that, even by a second.  The last one I did they were dismantling the finish line as I was crossing it. Not a good feeling at all

I'll be doing my normal daily 8-10 miles in a few hours. I'm trying to decide what route to run. Not a day to push the pace as I'll be racing both Saturday and Sunday.

Yowza. That's a heck of a workout the day before racing. How far are the races?

I ended up with 10.43 miles today. The last couple days I've purposely slowed the pace to easy z1. Sometimes I have a tendancy to start getting too much into z3 and that's not good for long distance training. Making myself run slow is actually kinda difficult.

Lately I've been finding I race better if I have a decent run the day prior to racing. Last week I ran about 10.5 the day prior to a 10K and I almost set a new PR on a very non-PR type of course. The week before I ran 8+ miles the day prior to a 5K in which I set a new PR by 48 seconds.

Saturday's race is only 2 miles. The running club has a 2 mile race the first Saturday of every month. It's a handicap race and there is only one winner - the person who runs the most under their handicap. The handicap system is somewhat complicated, but the more races a person does the better their odds, so we do this race every month as a family event.

Sunday is the first race of a 4 race series of XC races. Distance is approx. 3.5-4 miles, with about a half mile generally up the middle of a creek. The creek can be anywhere from ankle to knee deep depending on how it's flowing. I'd like to do well in this race. The other races all have various obstacles as well and get progressively longer with the last one being around 7 miles.

That's not so bad. I'm a big fan of a complete day off of running before racing. I've tried it both ways and I just feel fresher coming off the extra rest.

Nope. Neither is having people come up behind you picking up the cones as you run.

If these were important races I would likely take a day off. I use these races as part of my training. They are my speedwork. I find I will push myself much harder in a race than I would when training on my own. It's one of the reasons why I do a race almost every week.

I am fortunate to live in an area with a very active running community. Our local running club has its own timing system and puts on many inexpensive races all year. The monthly 2 miler is free, several 5Ks are free, several 4 race series cost only $30 for the 4 races, or $8.50 each. The only somewhat expensive races I've done all year are the Colorado Marathon, Bolder Boulder 10K, and the sprint duathlon. Most of the other local races not put on by the running club are $20-25. I've also done several TTs that the tri club puts on for free.

The membership fee between the running club and the tri club total $50. For that I get all these races and great discounts at all the local running stores and several of the LBS. It's a wonderful thing!

Compared with how much I used to spend on skiing, running is a bargain! When I go back to doing lots of tris next year after Boston I'll be doing much less racing as tris are fairly expensive.

I may push off today's run, I had a migraine this AM and was planning a noon run - didn't happen.  We'll see if I'm more together by this evening to get my run done -- it may be raining which would make the run more appealing!! yeah rain, bring it on!
