Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GRB1 - 2009-07-08 1:52 PM Bikes can be racked the morning of the event. This was not true the last 3 years, but I just checked the website and you are correct: Bikes can be racked in the Transiiton Area at Jean Klock Park on Friday between 5pm and 8pm, OR on race morning between 4:30am and 6:15am. However it looks like there is still no race morning packet pickup. This kind of changes things as race morning parking and shuttle buses have been a bit of a mess if you are not really early. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GRB1 - 2009-07-08 1:56 PM On the website they don't mention having gels available at the bike or run aide stations, they only mention Gatorade Endurance drinks. I was planning on bringing along my own nutrition (gels). I don't want to leave it to chance. I have picked up gels at the bike aid stations the last 3 years, so I don't imagine this would change without them saying something. However if you are at all picky about gel flavors then you certainly want to carry your own. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() They've had shuttles to the swim start, but they get very busy, so I just walked down the beach when I did it in '06. Check your bike on Friday night, bring the rest of the gear on Saturday morning. Bike stations had gatorade endurance, water, Powergel (not sure of the flavor) and bananas. Run stations had gatorade endurance, water, powergel, fruit (grapes, orange slices, bananas). If you haven't done much training with salt tablets, skip them for the race. It's typically low-mid 80's for the run so they can be helpful if you know what you're doing, but not *necessary* (like some really hot races). |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Anyone else a little concerned that Steelhead is allowing us to rack bikes on race morning? I have never been in a large race where you did not have to rack your bike the day before. Steelhead already has a bit of a reputation for congestion on race morning with long lines for parking, shuttles and porta-potties. If they are allowing racers to drive right up to transition on race morning to drop off bikes then I would think that congestion problems will be worse. Perhaps they are thinking that racers will ride their bikes in to the transition area from the parking lots? Anyone know what they are doing with starting waves this year? In previous years they had the pros in the first wave, and then the next several waves are older/slower waves with the young/fast racers starting in the last waves. I assume that they do this so that they have a shorter day, but I think it leads to the early waves being swum over and more drafting on the bike. |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I would imagine there will be some congestion. Guess I will need to plan on arrivng early. I will have some family support who should be able to drop me off at the Transition and then they can park the car, this should help make my morning a little less crazy. With regard to the old slow guys going first, I guess that means I might be going early. Not sure where the Clydes or the 41 and over guys go but I will be in one of those groups. Usually I am one of the later waves to start. I think your right in that they want to have people out on the course for less time, thereby starting the traditionally slower groups first. This might be a little discouraging as I will be getting past by a lot of faster people throughout the day. All I can do is race my race. One other question. Does this race require you to wear your race number during the bike portion? I am talking about the bib number typically worn during the run portion, not helmet or bike numbers. Greg |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think that they do require the bib number on the bike. I just put it on a race belt and turn it around to my back for the bike so that it does not flap. The race director posts on ST, so I asked him the questions about waves and bike racking and got this response: Bike check-in - Not sure if this will cause problems for race morning. We are assuming that about 500-700 athletes will choose to place their bikes in on Friday. (I would do so, as I love getting things done early) That means about 1000-1200 athletes will bring their bikes in on Saturday morning. The bike racks are individually numbered so athletes have assigned spots on the racks. Athletes bringing bikes is on race morning will not be able to ride the schuttle busses to the park. The 3/4 mile road from parking to the park is very well lit. I guess we will see if athletes arrive a little bit earlier to park, get the bike ready, and get to transition in time. The race will start at 7:00 AM, so athletes need to plan for the time it will take to get to the park, get ready and walk to the start. If it does not work, we will go back to madatory bike check in next year. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not racing this year, but we (BAMBAM66 and I) are coming up to volunteer for the weekend. Anybody putting together a BT dinner Friday evening? |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm in for a dinner Friday night. I don't know the area though, so I'm not sure where a good place to eat would be. Also, I'm planning on heading out to ride the bike course this Saturday, 7-18. Anyone interested? Plans are up in the air right now, and so far it's just me. I'll probably head out there fairly early, and would like to ride the whole course. Let me know if you want to go. I'll be driving from Grand Rapids and could car pool if it works. If your doing the BT HIM plan, Saturday calls for a 3 hour bike ride, so it should fit the schedule pretty well. We can throw a 20 min run in at the end too! Let me know if your interested. -Brad |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm around on the Friday - I'm actually arriving Thursday to get settled and organized and have a look at the course. I'm staying at the KOA campground with my parents and the BF. I have a cell that I can text with in the US - so I can be "found" if we organize something. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My family and I are coming on Thursday night and we're staying at the Silver Beach Hotel. I'd definitely be up for getting together on Friday. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i'm all for something friday night. I'll be coming up late afternoon to check the bike and maybe a dip in the water but after that i'm totally to hang out. My phone doesn't receive texts but i'll be happy to PM my # as we close in on the race day. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() alright i've pretty much collected everything I need to make my race happen including a ghetto- hotel room. My new task is to help the wife spectate, and by spectate I mean find an air conditioned, safe, WiFi hotspot near the area that she can go to after I leave T1. And then of course return after about 3.5 hours to see me enter/leave T2. Anyone planning on spectating this year or have in the past know of a place that fits the above requirements? Also any entertainment provided that i'd be able get her excited about would help to know about as well. 3 weekends away! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hmmm...air conditioned wi-fi may be a bit of a challenge, especially since roads into the park will be boogered up with race routes. If it is a hot day, Lake Michigan will feel G-R-E-A-T. Swimsuit, sunscreen, a small cooler of food/drink, and enjoy the sunshine, sand, and waves. We'll be hanging around most of the day and can spend some time keeping her company. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My mom, dad and BF will be there as well. Maybe we can get all the spectators together and they can hang out.... |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My parents, wife and 3 girls will also be there - maybe make it a BT supporters party ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Anyone know how different the course is from 2007 to this year? I'm kicking around the idea of riding it on the Computrainer - but if it's significantly different it might not be worth it... |

I'm kicking around the idea of riding it on the Computrainer - but if it's significantly different it might not be worth it... I found a route of the (probably) 2007 course on map my ride with a google search. It doesn't look too different so i'm sure the elevation profile is a close match if anything. I dunno though... a computrainer ride of the entire course? That'd be like 2.5-3.5+ hours depending on your pace. I have trouble riding a trainer more than an hour. You should schedule a weekend to drive out there and give it a test ride. I may be heading out there the weekend before the event to take a look at the course... maybe drive some of it... maybe ride some of it. Either way it's gonna be an easy pace. |

I know - it sounds a little crazy. It's a 4.5 hour drive for me to get down there ... so I could have an idea of the course without driving for hours. See... I had to special order my tri-shorts because I couldn't find what I was looking for in stores and the store is in London. So I figured since I was going to be driving up to pick them up anyway - I could ride part or all of the course... I know I'm going into taper - but I still have a 50 mile ride scheduled for the Sunday before the race - so that's almost the whole course... I know - sounds a little crazy. |

I just looked, and the course isn't much different than what I rode in 2006. FWIW, my volunteer assignment in 2007 was to drive the guy from Computrainer around the bike course ahead of the lead cyclist so he could videotape the route. The first "climb" is really just getting out of the park and over the dune. You really don't notice it either riding or driving (it isn't like you look at it and think "WOW!" Most of the rest are just little rollers, up/down 30 feet at a time and my momentum carried me up most of the way. |

Rolling hills I can deal with. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What are the general conditions of the roads on the bike course this year? I heard there is a lot of "gravel" on the roads. |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() not sure if anyone else caught this but in today's steelhead newletter: Ironman 70.3 World Champion Andy Potts will be at the TYR booth at the Steelhead Expo on Friday from 3:30pm to 4:00pm. Be sure to stop by the booth to meet Andy and to also see all of the Great TYR products at their booth. |

Racing in 5hit weather is one thing, but riding alone in the rain is not a good time. |
