Champion 7931 Sequim, Washington | Subject: RE: Team Comet - Dec. Limiter Challenge Offthegrid - 2008-12-06 7:04 AM Well, today we're going shopping. Woo-hoo. First to Bath & Body Works. I want to get some different shower gels for the gym. I like to think they help take away the smell of chlorine a tiny bit. Then I'm getting my hair cut. It's a little above shoulder length now, and I'm kinda liking it longer in the front, but it's turned into a mess in the back. And then the fun part - I get to shop for new running shoes! My new podiatrist says he wants me in cushioning shoes only. Well, I tried everything else, and my old orthotics certainly weren't helping, so I am hoping this will help do the trick. I'm also going to have them measure my feet and see about going into a smaller size. And then, the really fun part - I hope to do a very brief jog to try them out. I miss running a lot, but I know I have to start up again slowly. Sweet, I am not the only one who is post happy! |

Elite 3471 Evergreen, CO | Subject: RE: Team Comet - Dec. Limiter Challenge Offthegrid - 2008-12-06 7:59 AM I did a lot of stroke counting, and think I may have had another stroke breakthrough. I know from Total Immersion that you're supposed to snap the hips, but I don't think I was doing that enough. When I did, I felt the different. And for the first time, I got under 20 strokes/length. Woo hoo! I know that's still a little high, but I'm thrilled with it. I have inflexible ankles - it's what we're working on in physical therapy for my plantar fascia tear. I think I will incorporate more fin stuff in my swimming. But when I take them off, things seem to fall apart. And I hate feeling so slow afterward. You sound like me, but I still haven't gotten under 21 strokes per length. Congrats to you! I'm supposed to do lots of fin work, but never have enough time in the pool. Will have to focus on that on the weekends I suppose. |

Limiter Challenge Offthegrid - 2008-12-06 8:07 AM I gave her a toy and I thought she was chewing on that. *sigh* But then again, how many times have I told him not to leave his shoes laying around because the dog always manages to get a hold of them? So we may be shopping for two pairs of shoes today. Drat! It could be worse..... My darling pit/lab mix has so far eaten all the irrigation in the back yard, the side of the couch, and the side of the hot tub cover. Hoping he's outgrown his chewing phase, but I think he's just run out of things to eat |

Looking forward to working on all my homework What did you learn? Maybe sharing what you learned may help some of us other Comets! Well, one of the things that came up is that I tend to hunch in the water (probably because in every other sport you're bent at the waist) so we discussed the saucer thing you mentioned in your blog. When my back feels arched it's actually flat in the water. So I have drills to get me in the right position: use swim buoy and swim with my head up out of the water, for one. Also need to practice putting my hands in at 10:00 and 2:00 so they aren't crossing over in front of me. Overkick to get used to a smaller faster kick, with and without fins. Another drill, 6-3-6 where I kick on my side for 6 kicks with 1 arm out in front, 3x pull my body past my hand, 6 kicks on the other side, etc. That one's tough for me because my hips start sinking when I'm on my side. When I was doing things right today it was exhausting because I need more core work, but I could definitely feel the difference and felt faster |

It's the moment you have all been waiting for, anxiously hitting repeat all weekend long, in tense anticipation of.... RESULTS: THE FIRST WEEK It was a short one, getting into the swing of things and getting used to that wonderful winter weather. Reindeer are happier when it is colder, right? With 16% of the month over, the standings are: 1st: Vixens at 16.93% 2nd: Dancers at 14.51% 3rd: Comets at 12.11% 4th: Blitzens (Blitzii?) at 11.67% Now some of you have noticed that a teammate may not have a goal stated. In fact, on three of our four teams, we have a Get those workouts done, get them logged, and don't let your limiter this month stare you in the face for months to come! |

Can we overcome the effect of slacker members by exceeding our planned workouts? I signed up for 8 swim sessions. Not sure how I would accomplish this (and, in fact, couldn't), but let's say that I got in 16 swims this month and would thus be at 200%. Would that carry a total slacker? |

It's a busy time of year and updating may get overlooked.

Sorry that I have been a slacker so far...the only pool that is on my way to school is expensive and makes me sneeze. I am going to check out the pool at the brand new YMCA once school is done-tomorrow is my last day. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Team Comet - Dec. Limiter Challenge Swim session #4 for me today. It was actually my 3rd swim lesson with my new coach. Since most of us are swim focused this month, I'm putting in my notes from my lesson maybe they might right true with you. Skarl and I have both been working on similar issues. Very different lesson than expected. We worked solely on body position in the water mostly floating on my stomach or moving slowly up and down the lane. Cool thing is that I learned how I should be doing it. Turns out reason my feet drop w/o flippers is my core not my ankles..which are as flexible as my coach..she swims 100 free in 57 seconds..sweet hugh! She explained it as an saucer..which is how it feels and I need to relax but keep my core firm but not tense ro stress which makes me sink and is counter productive. We are starting at a basic level but this body position thing is huge. I can only keep the right position for about half a pool length but good thing is I could clearly feel the difference. Marianne said something to our coach when she takes off her flippers her feet will sink but I didn't have them on. Focus points: relax shoulders, arms, feet, legs kick from hips not knees Floopy feet close to the surface engage core not just back Feel like I am using flipper Do all that and work on sculling in a figure 8 on various planes on my back or on my front moving slowly up and down the lane. Maybe try easy catch up if I can continue the position or KOS...but only if I'm staying on the surface and not letting my legs sink. |

Kathy, can you explain more about the "saucer" analogy? I know my feet sink a little bit and I try to focus on keeping them at the surface, but then sometimes my head gets toooo low, and when I go to breathe I inhale water. |

Master 1790 | Subject: RE: Team Comet - Dec. Limiter Challenge I timed myself on a 50 today, just to see where I'm at. And it's either 1:00 or 2:00 -- I'm not sure! I'm guessing it's probably 2:00 because I'm so slow, though. I will have to time again next time I go and not be so stupid. But the *coolest* thing about my timed 50 is that I did a flip turn, even though I was swimming hard. I focused on arm position today. I'm at 4 sessions of 14 toward goal. I plan to go tomorrow, Friday and Saturday, but I'm going to have to be careful because my "bad" shoulder is feeling a bit tired. I might just do kicking tomorrow to work on ankle flexibility, which should help my plantar fascia tear. And maybe some flip turn drills and balance drills. |

It is as if you belly is lowest point in the water and your feet and arms extend out but up...so for me I have an arch in my back. It is the only way I can find true balance in the water. My coach said it is different for different folks their ideal balance point. Those that swim easily when they start tend to be floaters who stay on the surface easily. I'm not that type. I have to really engage my core and hamstrings to keep my feet up at the surface plus if I tense up I sink so I need to engage my core/center but let the rest of me be floppy. So in the water I'm like a saucer in shape front to back. Does that help? |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Team Comet - Dec. Limiter Challenge Right now to get proper position I can only do it for half a pool length as it is really hard. I did an IM this summer and can swim 2+ hours. When I try to swim in that position my legs sink again. For now I'm just working on floating and proper body position and no swimming. I'll kick gently on belly and back back and forth in the pool. If I get it I'll try KOS (kicking on my side) or catch up drill trying to stay on the surface. I know if I can master this I will be much faster and I need to spend the time getting it to be normal for me and it is hard. I also need to kick from my hips not my knees and keep feet floopy like they are flippers. It is tough to explain and get..find a great swim coach is key. |
