My prayers are with you and your family David.

Got my work-out in today. 60 mins of various cardio at the gym. Hopefully I can get up early tomorrow. After work I have a long thousand mile drove ahead of me and I'm not sure if ill get any work-out out in for the next few days.

Merry Christmas everyone if I dont get back on-line before then.

David... sorry to hear of your loss.  I lost my dad and my brother this year.   It's never easy, whether you expect it or not.

On the training front I'm going to swim today.  Hope to get in at least 2500m.

Question:  It is 14 degrees so there is NO way I'm getting on my bike!  I don't have a bike trainer and don't see myself with a few hundred dollars to buy one in the near future.  (I still have to find the $$ to buy clipless pedals and shoes.)  I like doing spin at the gym, but outside of that, I find that I never ride.  I never feel like I get a decent workout if I'm on one of the stationary bikes on the regular gym floor (outside of spin class).  I just don't know how to push myself.   Do any of you find you can get a decent workout on one of those stationary bikes?  I belong to Lifetime Fitness, a really nice place with a zillion different choices of machines, but never quite know what to do.  So I always end up doing different things.  If I don't hop on a bike until spring when I can ride my "real" bike, is that going to really hurt me?

Hi All...

Susan,  I think that spin classes are a great way to increase your bike fitness in the winter.  I agree with you on the stationary bikes.  I never feel like I get as good a workout on them, but after a spin class I am spent!  Can you go to 2-3 spin classes a week?  I think if you did that, you will be fine once the temps warm up.

I have found that over 50 I am OK to ride outside.  As long as I keep my feet, wars and fingers warm I am OK.

Did not make it to 5am aerobics.  Still have a bike interval session tonight.  I am taking off tomorrow and friday, and the weather is suposed to improve so i am hoping to get some outdoor training the next several days.  Texas weather is bizarre.  One day it's 30, then next 60...weird.

Happy Tuesday everyone!

If you are trying to have a "workout" on a stationary bike, you have to go by heartrate.  I agree that they are very easy to just sit and spin, and not accomplish anything.  If you ever think you are going too easy, or are just kind of drifting off while riding, make it harder.  You'll remember you are on the bike, and your heartrate will react as well.  The moral of the story is.....If you think you are going to easy, make it harder.  If you think you are going too hard, wait 2-3 more minutes, then if necessary, make a change.  They will not replace riding your bike, but they can still be an effective tool for your aerobic systems.  Just try to not have steady state rides.  We get lulled into just spinning unless there is a goal for the ride.

Unfortunately I am only able to make one spin class a week because of schedules.   I have two kids to shuttle back and forth to and from school, and the times that most of them are scheduled just don't work for me.  But I can typically make one on Friday afternoons.  And if for some reason that doesn't happen, I'm out of luck until the following Friday.

Today's goal - drink 48 oz of water.

Have a swim training session with my personal trainer later tonight. We'll see what we get accomplished today. And then a quick 15 min. bike ride (stationary - Its in the 20's up here and snow everywhere, there is no riding my bike outside scenario possible).

Ran a hilly 4 on the treadmill today...I'm home alone with the girls, so I couldn't run outside, but the Y has childwatch.

Tomorrow - cycle at the Y, Thursday - run outside. And on Thursday, I should be opening my new trainer...so I can avoid the stationary at the Y.

I've ridden the stationary bike for the last 2 winters...it does kinda suck, but I use my HR extensively and have been able to pack in some good Z2/3 rides. I usually dial it up to a medium difficult random and then mess with the level and my HR until I'm steadily in Z2. It's not my favorite thing to do - my biggest gripe is the big touring saddle...but at least it's kept me on a bike. (Spin class is good too - the bikes feel better, but the times don't usually work for me and I hate the spin bunnies that want you to bounce up and down...although most leave me alone 'cause I shoot them the evil eye when they look at me.)

Yeah - what he said - that's why I use the random program...to keep from a steady state. I play a game with myself to keep my cadence 90+...so I have to pay attention to that and it isn't a steady boring ride because I have to keep picking hte pace up and down (in addition to watching my HR like I mentioned before.)

Sorry I've been absent, it's been a crazy few days getting ready for Christmas and traveling. I did well on my workouts this weekend, but yesterday and today were just mediocre. I hope my legs are up for a run tomorrow, I need to get back into it!

Hey everyone!  Got my bike intervals in today.  I have been following Jorge's bike interval program and I really have to say that i already feel like my bike strength and endurance is getting better.

Tomorrow I am going to break my bad habit of not drinking enough when I am at home.  I also am going to get to the gym and lift and maybe try out that thing they have.  It's rectangular.  Looks to be about 25 yards long with black stripes painted on the bottom.  It's filled with some sort of liquid.

Night all!

Happy Christmas Eve everyone!!

Today I am going to swim.  I still have to find out what time the gym closes.  Steve has a meeting and should be home by 2 so as soon as he gets home, we're getting wet!

Then it's our Christmas Eve traditional dinner of fried chicken. Goes back 18 years when we were dating and he was coming to my apartment on Christmas Eve.  I asked him to stop on the way and pick up some fried chicken..not as heathly eating conscious as we are now.  Anyway, about 2 hrs later he shows up.  Took him that long to find some.  Fast forward 18 years later and every Christmas Eve we go on a quest to find some.  Because it has gotten easier over the years (Super Walmarts and Targets, and stores staying open later, we have put rules into effect to make it a true quest.

So, that's my day. Have a great one everyone!

Didn't get my full planned workout in yesterday. Was late getting to the gym and my trainer forgot that we had a swim session planned, so we did 1/2 hour regular stength training instead.

Did get the 3 mile bike ride (on stationary) in at the end of the workout. Don't think I'll get anything done today and tomorrow. Have too much to do for christmas, family and friends from Boston and UK coming over tonight and spending the night with us, and then the rest of the family from CT comes for dinner tomorrow. Too much to do and not enough time. pffffffffffttttt...

I am planning on dragging my friend from UK to the gym on Friday and Saturday with me though. We'll see how that goes.

Happy Holidays to everyone.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

I hit the gym this afternoon for a quick cycle...tomorrow I'll run outside since the Y is closed. (Plus a run will give me an hour's worth of peace in the craziness!)

Have a great time!

I love runs on holiday mornings.  We always do a 10K on Thanksgiving (our only other tradition).  Not an organized one, just go out and run.  We have a long run on the schedule on Sunday so tomorrow will probably just be a short run.  The fact that I have not run in 2 weeks may make a difference too.

Friday I am going to the track to do a TT test.  My HR data is seriously jacked up.  I think it may be phisiologically impossible to spend an hour and a half in zone 5, but during the White Rock Half, that's what my monitor said.  I tend to believe that the readings from the HR monitor were right but my zones are off.  We will find out Friday.  Saturday is hopefully a long ride if the weather is good.

I swam.  1150 yards.  The first 200 my arms felt like lead but after that it was not too bad.  At least I got in the water...that's the first step!

In the time it took her to swim 1150, I only went 1000.  Owwww.  I haven't swam since longhorn and it showed.  It gets better from here though....

What's a pool?! I don't think my bathing suit fits....

I did find some new pools and am excited to get back on the training wagon starting in Jan! Very, very excited! I think I am actually starting to miss the trainer...that is HUGE for me!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Any Christmas workouts planned for today?  Our day is going to be very quiet

Making a nice breakfast....something I never do.  Eggs, bagels and these sausage turnovers I do.

Then going to see a movie.  Either Benjamin Button or 4 Christmas's.

Then, going out somewhere for dinner.  Not sure where or even what's open.  We are just going to drive around and find someplace that is open and looks good.

Oh...an hour trainer ride between the movie and dinner.

I hope everyone has a great day!
