(hand raises) me me.me.

It is not a dumb question.
I just right click and highlight the table. Then Paste. Then go into training log edit. Then paste/copy into training log Goals section. Apply and it is there. The real hard part is actually making the table. Neal: Thanks so much for making it.

Chris

PS I actually did get my P90X, swim and run in yesterday!!

You should be able to just highlight it, then copy and paste it into your goals section.  After that I would check the links from your log page to make sure it works.

If it doesn't try copying and pasting from the chart in my log.  I've found that sometimes that works better

Oops.  Sorry Chris I didn't see that you had already answered David's question.

The table wasn't too bad.  I basically copied one that someone else had made for one of my challenge groups and changed the links and background

I don't think so.  Look by your calendar on the left side.  There should be something that says Quick Links.  Click on the first icon under that that says control panel.  Then click on the header "goals"

Sure I'll go in on this weight loss deal as well.  Just weighed myself at the gym yesterday morning I was just a hair over 170 lbs. Started off between 190 and 195 about 14 wks ago. I really can't post a target weight as a goal I have no idea what I am aiming for honestly. My goals are more closely tied to the mirror and a set of calipers than to a scale (drop the love handles, single digit BF), but I if I do things right my weight will drop significantly still so we'll have to see where I am at the end of the month.

Hello everyone, I was doing well with December training the got just a bit lazy around New Years and have been sick since.

The weight-training challenge might just be the ticket to get me working hard this month.

I am at a solid 200lbs now (at a bit over 6' 2".  I want to get to 193 by month end.  Last season's race weight was 189-192.

Considering I have food poisoning right now, and can't eat anything except a few sips of chicken broth, I may have this challenge won.

I hate not being able to get my training in due to illness, but I'm hoping it will soon pass.

I'm up for the weightloss challenge. At 6ft 155, I don't really need to lose any weight, but I think a drop of 5 pounds could make me feel a little lighter on the swim and run. That's my goal.

 Good luck to everyone.

Damn!  When I was your age and shared your lean build my goal was gain weight.   I doubt you'll be discouraged if you don't loose any weight.

Hey,

How often do you guys do two or more tri sports back to back for training? ...like do 30 min of laps then dry off and go run? ...just curious

I frequently do Bike-Run-Bike and B-R-B-R-B workouts.  But part of the reason is it is fun.

you'll find a lot of diff in how people go about training, and how you mix up the workouts/put them together.

in the end there is no real secret, its simply a matter of doing the most work you can with the least damage to your body. the lower your overall training time, the more you can play with how hard you go, how you mix up workouts, etc.

as an example, if i were running say 3 times per week, 3-4 miles each time, i would prob end up hammering those runs. at tops thats only 12 miles per week, you wont get hurt doing that (most people). as milage goes up, training intensities need to come down or you will get hurt.

that said, i see a ton of epople thinking they are doing enough training to see their potential, or that they will never be able to do higher milage because they tried it once and got hurt.

while it is true that some people will never be able to hit very high milage, it is almost always true that doing more will yeild better results. whether that is someone getting from 10 miles per week to 15 or 20, or going from 35 to 65 miles a week, its the same idea. most people with the crazy high milage are there simply because they have spend YEARS, not weeks or months, getting there.

now most of us dont have the time, or drive to hit some of those levels, but there is always going to be a sweat spot of diminishing returns on training leves vs time gains, yet again, most of us will never even hit those levels and end up thinking that the lower volumes we do are enough.

this is all kind of a long winded way to say that while everyone is diff, the same things apply to everyone, the more training you can do, and stay healthy, the faster you are going to go.

for me this means making choices about when i do certain workouts, and in what order. i tend to try and get in two to three shorter workouts per day rather than cram on or two very big ones in, because it allows me to spread things out, and keep them shorter right now.

for me bricks are a higher injury risk type of workout, and the gains from them are not really any more than doing the sports on their own. your legs are gonna feel tired half way through a longer run, just like they will running after a bike.

that being said, there are some reasons why i will include them in my workouts.

first, its a great way to get in a long workout without sticking to one sport. once every three weeks or so i will do a LONG workout, can be in the 3-6 hour range, and there is no way i would do this in any single sport. the ones i did last season were like this: 4 hour ride followed by 5 mile run, another was: 5 mile run, 40 mile ride, 5 mile run, or something similar. this is a good way to get in a very long workout, while lowering the injury risk.

the other main denifit is that it allows you to make the best of time in the case of b/r/b/r type workouts. set up a trainer, or ride near a track, and just go back and forth.

Does anyone know if there is a rule for the amount of mileage you should put on running shoes?  I knew my old shoes had a lot of miles on them and I was starting to get some knee pain that I normally don't feel so I went ahead and got some new shoes and now the last 2 runs I haven't felt a thing

300-450 miles for most shoes.

terrain, weather, how heavy you are/run will all effect how quickly they wear. using them in day to day life will shorten the life a LOT. the shoes are breaking down long before you see outside wear on them. i try to slowly rotate a new pair in every 250 miles or so, so while one shoe is nearing the end of its life, the new one is breaking in.

if you start getting pains like that, replace them. for me its on my shins, but the same thing, as they near the end of their life i start getting more sore, tiem to replace.

Nothing but hot and humid here in Houston, as always, 364 days a year...

My 1st event is a half marathon on Feb 15th, about five weeks out (1st sprint tri is two weeks later), I just did my long run for this week today, 10 miles at about a 9:30 easy pace. My goal for the event is under 1:45, which would be an ave pace of under 8 min/mile. All the training info I've read has been for marathons and everyone agrees that you shouldn't run the full race distance before the race. Am I right in thinking this does not hold true for the half marathon? I suppose my question is what distance (or time) should I try to build my long run up to for this? Thanks!!

i would say a big part of it is goign to have to do with your weekly milage, how long you have been running, and your goals for the race.

the last two years in training for half IMs, i had a few runs that went up to about 15 miles over the summer, and every 8-14 days had one around 9-13.

i think its a bit easier to go over thedistance with a half and not hurt yourself or burn out the way you would running 26 miles.

that said, if you trust yourself to be able to run the distance, as long as you are getting in a few runs over 90 min, then i would not worry about hitting the real long ones yet. instead i would keep the weekly milage up a bit more (assuming you are looking to get in a bit more either there or on a long run, i would choose overall totals).

the real magic starts to happen on long runs over 90 min, this is where you body starts to really adapt to the changes . this is part of the reason long runs dont need to be fast at all, you simply need ot be running for the time, not pushing it.

good luck on the race. i would shoot for your goal during the first half to 8 miles or so, and then re-evaluate and see how you are doing, always room there to bring it down for the remainder if you are able, but it would be real hard to come back from a fast start.

hey all, i am opening the group back up to see if we can get a few more active members in here. i thought we had more people than we did, and a few have not logged back on sense that first time, so hopefully we can get a few new faces and get a bit more conversation going.

on a side note, what races are people looking at for the upcoming season?

What I wouldn't give for snow down here!! It snowed one night about a month ago and it was a HUGE event, hadn't happened in years, and like a decade before that. I made a snowman and still have three snowballs in my freezer!

Thanks for the info on the long runs, yeah I'm kicking up the weekly mileage a bit, making hour long runs the norm instead of my longer runs and I'll try to get in a 1:45 long run about once a week too. This week my mileage was about 27 ...shooting for around 35 for now.

I think my plate is pretty full as far as races go until May, which is as far out as I've planned. I'm running the Austin Half Marathon in February I talked about earlier, then my 1st tri (sprint, duh) two weeks later on March 1st. The event is new I think; it's meant to raise money for Hurricane Ike victims. It's on open water swim on Lake Conroe, so a few weeks out I'm gonna try to get down to the beach to swim in some open water ...I hear it's WAY different. April 4th I wanna try to do a quarter @ the Lone Star Triathlon on Galveston, which I think is a pretty big event that people travel here for, they have a half IM... About mid May is the Heart of Texas Triathlon in Austin, the swim is in Lake Travis, if I'm doing really well and feeling daring I may go for the half IM, but that's a long way off....

looks good so far.

i too only really have through may planned. i am pretty sure i am moving to boulder with my g/f after the rowing season ends here (i will be coaching at ohio university this winter/spring), so i have no idea what races i can find there.

the lonestar races are top notch from what i hear, should have a blast there.

I haven't committed to any races yet, but have gone back and forth on the distances that I want to commit to.  I have registered for the Springboat Springs Marathon which is June 7th.  There is two different Sprints two weeks later.  Do you thing it would be to much to compete in a sprint two weeks removed from a marathon?

I originally planned on running up to a half Iron in Aug, but I think I might skip that on and get the one that is in Sept.  I was looking on trifind.com yesterday and couldn't believe how many tris there are in this area.

I will get back once I start making some more choices on which races.
