Veteran 169 | Subject: RE: Artemis's Mentor Group - FULL! On a rest and recovery week, how much do you scale back your normal training? I was thinking of cutting my normal workout time by 50% and keeping everything at a low RPE level. Is that on the right track or is there a better rule to follow? |

I think my training plans have recovery weeks around 75% of the week before. Week 3 is the hardest week and the recovery week the week after. |

Work got crazy and blah, blah... long story short eating and exercising got sidetracked. Fell off the wagon but will climb back aboard. Great job, those of you who had competitions last week! |

Expert 616 searching for the elusive runner's high! | Subject: RE: Artemis's Mentor Group - FULL! It has been quiet on this post lately. What does everyone have planned for the weekend? I have a bike planned today, run tomorrow (early, early) and then a long bike on Sunday. My pool is closed all next week b/c Ryan Lochte (Olympic medalist) is having an event for a local swim team. Next week is a taper week before my sprint so not too big of a deal but I usually do a couple of easy swims during that time....hmmm. |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Artemis's Mentor Group - FULL! This weekend, I have a race. I'm doing a duathlon as part of the National Duathlon festival. It's a 5k run/18k bike/2.5k run. It is supposed to be very hot on Sunday - in the 90s - and my race starts at 3! I'm hoping to not get sunburned as I will be in a wedding the next Saturday (5/2) |

Veteran 369 Fairbanks | Subject: RE: Artemis's Mentor Group - FULL! Artemis - 2009-04-17 4:33 PM Would anyone be interested in doing a mentor group "challenge" for May? Each of us can post goals for swimming, biking, and/or running. Maybe also a personal goal like "work on flip turns" or "do a brick". So I don't know if anyone ever responded to this, but I for one would love to have a challenge. I've done the Super Heroes Challenge for April (in which I'm pretty sure you're the enemy, HAHA) and it's been great. Really motivates me to get to the gym, etc. Anybody else have some thoughts? |

Veteran 369 Fairbanks | Subject: RE: Artemis's Mentor Group - FULL! Artemis - 2009-04-17 4:36 PM Last note from me for a little while: I really am sorry I've been a little out of it so far. I have a qualifying exam for graduate school coming up on Wednesday. It's a pretty big deal, so I've been really pre-occupied with that. Hopefully, it all goes well on Wednesday, I pass, and have more time to do some of the things I should have done (like make a table with links to all of our blogs and stuff). I really do apologize to all of you. No problem... life has a habit of getting in the way. So far, I'm really enjoying being part of this group; it's nice that it goes a little slower, because I can't get online that often and when I find myself playing catch-up on posts (like, say . . . now) I'm glad I don't have 17 pages to read through. Hope your exam went well sorry if you've already mentioned it, but like I said I'm catching up on previous posts!! Where are you hoping to go to grad school, and what for? |

Swimming and/or biking and/or running - could be time, could be distance, could be something like "learn how to do flip turns" 2. Something outside of training - could be read a book, could be work on some knitting (mine!), could be movie night with the family. I feel like balance is important, so that's why this is included. Pick a reward! What do you get if you finish your goals? I like to have things to bribe me and keep me motivated, so if I know what I'm working for, it will help. What do you guys think? |

I'll try to do my part in fixing that!! My plans for this weekend involve camping and hiking. It's going to be kind of chilly, about twenty degrees at night, but I'm really looking forward to it!! Hopefully I'll also get in a run/walk at least one day, maybe on Sunday when I get back. |

I'm actually in grad school now - 3rd year of a PhD program at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). I'm doing genetics and statistics: what genes are involved in the failing heart in patients with Pulmonary Hypertension. I did pass my exam, which is the big hurdle as a PhD. My project is approved and "all" I have to do now is finish my research and write my dissertation. I'm so relieved!!! |

How much fluid do you have to take in during a race like that in those kind of temps? Good luck on your race!! |

How much fluid do you have to take in during a race like that in those kind of temps? Good luck on your race!! A LOT! I won't have anything but Gatorade and water tomorrow and try to drink two bottles of water before the race. I'll probably have a big bottle (24 oz) of water+electrolytes on the bike and grab cups of water on the run. I also take Endurolytes (electrolyte tabs) before the race and some more after the race. I've heard people say that extra electrolytes aren't necessary, but I always feel better when it is hot and I use them. |
