Veteran 260![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Monument, Colorado | Subject: RE: Disturbed275's Mentor Group - Closed!I completed my first brick session today. I did a 30 min (3.5 mi) run following an 1 1/2 (21.5 mi) bike ride. I had the dead legs as expected, but by 1/2 - 3/4 mi was feeling ok and by 1 mi my legs felt fine. A nice protein fortified gatorade drink for recovery combined with a hot shower and a few minutes of quiet - I'm feeling good. Now to help with the house work and get ready to grill some meat! The weather in Germany is great, warm, sunny and a slight breeze. Hope your training day goes well and that you have similarly good weather to enjoy with family and friends. |

The day started poorly as because of technical problems the pool could not be used so the event became a sprint duathlon instead (not too unhappy as my swimming is poor). Conditions were great, quite warm and sunny but a bit breezy, we started in waves of six. The first run was a 1.44 mile run (including the run into transition), which I did in 9mins 32 seconds (average of 6m 37s per mile). The bike course lasted 14.77 miles, pretty good, one nasty steep hill at 2 miles which was a challenge but the rest pretty ok, head wind for a long drag but not too bad. The final run was fun, wow Mr Wobbly Legs to start but I soon found a decent rhythm and did the 2.82 miles in 19 mins 28 seconds (average of 6m 54s per mile). Total time for the event was 1 hour 18m 57 seconds. Pretty pleased with the effort, no real dramas, felt comfy and really enjoyed it! I’ll post the split and transition times once the results come in and I can now unexpectedly say I’m a duathlete as well as triathlete! Have a crazy day peeps x Congrats, duathlete |

I hope to do one of those soon! Can you actually buy proetien fort. gat. or did you mix it? I mix it myself - two scoops of powder gatorade w/ one or two scoops of Life Extension Whey proteing (depending on how much protein I want after a workout) mixed in three cups of water. Sometimes I throw Creatine into the mix. With this you get your carbs and protein with a good ratio - and good infusion of water to replace lost fluids. |

What do you think? Is it too early in my training to do so? The use of hill repeats and interval training are both useful ways of increasing your run fitness and speed, however, I don't think they are necessary for someone relatively new to running. If you've been running consistently for a while (a year minimum) and you feel like you've plateaued (you're running the same pace regardless of distance) then it may be time to add in some hills or intervals. But if you are still building up distance/time or working to shorten run/walk ratios then its probably not necessary. Nicki, I can't remember specifically how long you said you've been running so I guess I don't have a real concrete suggestion. If you want more information on a sample hill repeat workout I'll gladly give it. |

Probably worked out good as I am tapering this week for Sat. I did 15 but went really easy. Plan on 3.5 mile run tomorrow and short swim. Short swim short bike Wednesday short run Thursday and a walk Friday. Open to suggestions and really getting excited I am afraid I will swim like a madman and blowup. |

Because that will usually get interesting. My first couple of tris I went out too hard on the swim and found breathing hard to get back under control. Amidst the chaos try and stay as relaxed as you can. Do some backstroke if need be and even rest on the buoys or kayaks if you have to. Hopefully you won't need to, but just realize that is an option. Sometimes it takes a few miles on the bike to get the heart rate back down. One tip on the bike is to switch to a lower gear and pedal at a higher cadence for the last mile or two. This will help get your legs used to turning over and ready for the run. Have you practiced laying out a transition area yet? If not I would suggest doing so. Most importantly, have fun! |

Veteran 168![]() ![]() ![]() New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: Disturbed275's Mentor Group - Closed!I would also recommend going in the water before the start of the race. I used to jump in the water when the race started but always had a hard time breathing and getting to my race pace. Now, I go in the water before the start of the race to get water in my wetsuit and let my body heat the water before the race starts and swim a little. It makes a big difference for me. It is like my body gets used to the water temperature and ready to go when the race starts. Even if you do not wear a wetsuit, it is probably better to get your body used to the temperature of the water before the whistle blows. |

Champion 10742![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Ames, IA | Subject: RE: Disturbed275's Mentor Group - Closed!Good call on getting in the water beforehand. That cold water can really be a shock if you're not ready for it. I guessing it will be quite cold at this point in the season. I would get in and swim a little bit as close to the start time as possible. That'll minimize the time you have to wait around wet and cold before the start. |

Member 357![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Disturbed275's Mentor Group - Closed! It is open water and I am a little concerned because I have no open water swims under my belt we tried to find a spot but no luck. I am not concerned with the distance at all but the start and swimming around a large group is another matter. The water temp is about 60 now and I have a wet suit so the temp does not worry me, scuba diving for years so getting in the water and letting the suit do its thing not a problem and I also plan to swim a little just because even in pool sessions I don't get comfortable til 200 or 300 meters (breathing ). I have not laid out transition but plan on doing it I have watched a couple videos on it and have practiced transition from bike to run several times and getting out of wet suit but we shall see. I am about to explode with anticipation they are calling for bad storms this weekend so I hope all is a go I don't think I could take a cancellation |

It should be an experience for you. Sounds like you are well prepared though. My first tri was canceled due to storms, which was a bummer. Lucky for me I had another scheduled 2 weeks later, although it was an Oly rather than a sprint |

May get through sprints this year build base and do it next year I think 10-12 hours a week would be more than enough time to prepare for an Oly. You really just need one long, run, bike, and swim per week. The other sessions can be shorter and more intense. |
