Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I did my run/walk training yesterday and today, so that's to the good. But last night after dinner I ate a whole bag of Cracker Jacks. I still feel bilious. Why do I do these things? I hear (and share) your frustration! Recently I learned a couple of things that I found interesting. The first was a book on an unrelated topic - sibling bickering - but the author talks about how every person has two sides to their personality - their "adult self" and their "baby self". The adult self is the self we present to the world - competent, in control, disciplined. It grows and matures over our lives. The baby self, on the other hand, never grows up. It is whiny, lazy and demanding. It wants what it wants, now. It wants everything, not just what it needs. It has no self control, no discipline. Our baby selves come out when we're at home or with our family. (For those of you with kids, think of how teachers can tell you they're angels in the classroom, but they act totally differently at home.) But we need our baby selves - it's when we're in our baby self mode that we can totally relax, recharge, and form our closest bonds with others. Then, I was listening to Jillian Michael's 6/21 podcast and she talks about how there are parts of our brain dedicated to rational thought, and parts dedicated to impulsive behavior. And that clicked with the adult self v. baby self dichotomy. These two different modes of "being" are actually hard-wired into our brains. So, I realized that I have allowed my baby/impulsive side to control much of my decision making about food ("I don't care I want this ice cream now"), and what I need to do now is to put my adult/rational self in charge of those decisions ("I'd rather lose weight than eat the ice cream.") I don't know if anyone else will find that interesting or helpful, but I have. |

You weren't sounding very hopeful last we heard from you so this is good! Take it easy as you get back into things. A little pain is OK but a lot is not good. I hope things get better as you continue to work with the doctor. Did they ever find out what it is or what caused it? Nope they still don't have a clue what happened- they suspect it was a combination of various factors- contraceptives, cigarettes and training. I'm trying to be positive and thinking I'll be back to normal in January but this last "workout" really scared me. Well, hope it was all cos of the gym bikes which are generally crappy. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi All, I was just wondering if anybody knows of any good website with salad recipies? I used to have a homemade salad for lunch every day (as a side dish) but since I should avoid "green leafy veggies" which includes lettuce I'm kinda stuck. Yeah I know I'm not very good when it comes to combining imagination and cook. Or when it comes to cooking as such. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Happy Monday all! Well, here's some good news! "My kids go back to school on Friday"! "Yeee Haw"! Just kidding! ![]() In all honesty I am going to miss them being home with me all day. I have discovered a new found appreciation for house wives/ home makers. Spent most of the weekend in the pool doing laps and water aerobics. I have lost weight, however I will wait until Wednesday to tell you about it. Edited by kiwi4j 2009-08-10 8:26 AM |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For non-leafy green veggies, I find that poppyseed dressing goes with pretty much any fruit and sweet vegetable. (Berries, cucumbers, oranges, apples...) I like to add a few pecans or walnuts or almonds to a salad, too, so it's more filling. There are a bunch of recipes, (regular and low-fat versions) at allrecipes.com I hope you're feeling better and better! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jo, I got some great salad recipes from a library book this summer called Raising the Salad Bar: Beyond Leafy Greens. Here's an Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Raising-Salad-Bar-Greens-Inventive-Chicken/dp... Maybe it's available in Ireland. Tri365, I think that's really true. Thanks for posting the info. Definitely a little kid here that doesn't want to be told what not to eat! Also there's a good bit of mindless eating going on. One handful is fine, but it leads to lots more handfuls--til it's all gone. ![]() No training today. But i ate well! Hope your day is going well. Mary |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok so I just got a book and DVD from amazon.com today. I got the ideas from AbbieR and so I thought I would check them out. The DVD is Get Ripped and the book is Paleo Diet for Athletes. I am really hoping that the combo of the two will help me lose some weight. I'll let you know how it goes as soon as I get them. Wish me luck!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So Wednesday it is and the scales showed 71kg so I'm down 1kg (72 kg last week)- yay! And that's all in terms of good news. I went to see my consultant yesterday and he;s happy enough with my progress but siad no flying so no sun hoildays this year again. I checked various combinations of ferry-bus-train but it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to expensive to get to mainland Europe like that and also takes approximately 2 days to get anywhere with real summer- I'm developing a serious sun deficiency syndrome cos it's been raining every day since the beginning of July. So being upset with that I binged on........ apricots last night. I think I had 8 of them but they were reasonably small. All I can really do is go to UK (thinking Wales) or Northern Ireland (which is up the north from where I live, same island) - now both of these places are great but weather wise they are as challanegd as we are. So while driving to the hospital this morning for my weekly blood tests I was trying to think how much fun I could have in the above palces etc and I was getting excited but that didn't last long. My INR was only 1.8 today (I should be between 2-3) so I'm getting more meds and tummy injections. What upsets me the most is that this level of INR is dangerous for me and God knows how long I've been walking around like that- for all I know it could have been the whole week which is bad. Even the nurse looked concerned and they rarely do. Crap. So that's all from me- happy Wednesday! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jo, well done on the weight loss but the rest sounds totally miserable, poor you. Know it's hard but try and keep positive, I really sympathise with the lack of sun after living in Scotland most of my life. Are they any closer to finding out why it happened? |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone, Aug: 158/157.8 8/12: 156.6 down 1.2 from last week Aug goal: 154 End goal: 150 I swam my 1 mile open water swim on Saturday. It was cold (no wetsuit) and a lot more disorienting than I expected, but I'm really glad I did it. I have new respect for people who race in the ocean. The place I swam was a very sheltered cove with no waves, but the water moved so much more than any lake I've been in! Plus, swimming in salt water just feels so different than swimming in fresh water. I hope everyone else had a good week. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Start for the month 199.9 Aug 199.6 Today 197.6 I am amazed I weighed in at this weight today since on Monday morning I was 202lbs! I deserve it after the weekend I had....again! This stops now! Well, most of it;-) There is no need to eat bar food and drink 20 beers all weekend!!!! I would probably weigh about 195 today had I been good over the weekend....rrggghhhhhh!!!! I have really gotten too cocky lately since I have been losing the weight pretty steadily without too much fuss other than the actual exercising and eating healthy most days of the week. Today is the first of a 3 part/week series of Stroke and Stride here in Cayman, so looking forward to that, should be fun. Today is just a 400M swim followed by a 2mile run. Go Skinnies! Just don't what I do and you will be fine! ![]() |
