GaryRM - 2010-03-03 3:38 PM Zia, same group as you (m45-49) and was happy with this years placement.  I can see how the young speedsters are going to be a bit miffed.  Will have to put a "Sorry you had to pass this" on my tail for them ;>

Training is going well and a couple of more long rides and I will be set.

Yeah, bring on the carnage on the bike! Fortunately its a closed course (right?) so there should be plenty of room to pass?

Last year @ the NYC Tri I was in the 2nd to last wave and since the bike is my strength I must have passed 1/4 of the field (not bragging since for 1/3 of the field that was their first EVER triathlon). I just remember it felt a lot faster than I was really going because I was buzzing past so many people from start to finish.

I just hope there is water left for me at the end.

I've done Ironman FLorida 2009 the Great Floridian HIM but I'm wondering how they do the gear (bags) at The New Orleans race. Is it like Olympic distance races where you get to keep your gear right at your bike, or is it like IM Florida, where you submit your T1 and T2 bags to the volunteers who hand them to you on the way to a changing room? Thanks in advance!

uktri - 2010-02-19 12:08 PMHi all,
Im planning on doing this as my first ever triathlon and really looking forward to it. Is the water in new orleans warm enough to not wear a wetsuit. I have been teaching myself front crawl however it hasnt been going to well so i am going to do breastroke. From what i have read swimming wetsuits arent really designed with bs and would actually be a hinderance. Would people just recommend doing it in a tri suit then? Also what are the cheapest accomodation option, hoping to come for a week and make a holiday out of it.
many thanks
I used to do breaststroke in tris- my first 3 or 4 tris were BS. Doing it in a wetsuit isn't so great because the legs of a wetsuit are very bouyant and are designed to keep your legs and butt at waterline (elevated). Doing the frog kick in a wetsuit isn't easy and it wastes a lot of energy. I'm not that much faster at freestyle, but it's much more efficient. I was in an early wave last year which was so nice. I will be starting near the back this year, not so nice. I know they had issues last year with people remaining on the course too late. Law eforcement wanted the streets closed earlier. I suppose this is why they moved the quicker age groups toward the back.

It's 8 hour cutoff from the start of the first wave or from the start of the last wave? Would love to hit a sub-6hr but 6.5 is probably about right.  I am at 7:28 so I should have no issues either way.  If I was in one of the last waves I would be a little nervous.

It's usually from the start of the LAST wave.  I'm sure that's the way it will be at NO.  The website might have that info.

I believe that was a question someone brought up in the mandatory briefing last year and the answer was 8 hrs from the last wave start.  I just hope the party is still there at the end by the time I get there...lol

For those that have done this race in the past...will we need tinted goggles for the swim or is the sun not an issue and clear goggles will suffice?

Last year it was overcast during the swim.  The swim course has changed from last year's course.

The new course is a rectangle so you will be swimming east for part of it.  I suggest bringing clear and tinted goggles to the transition area then making a 'game time' decision.  FWIW, I always use clear goggles. I find it easier to spot the bouys through clear goggles.

The RnR 1/2 I did had a text message tracking system so those following the runner could get updates.  Do you know if they will have something similar for NOLA?  My family will be there and it would be helpful to get updates on where I am.

Emailed them and got the following back:

Thank you for the email.  Ironman New Orleans 70.3 will not utilize text or email messaging.  Family and Friends will be able to track the progress of athletes online via the Ironman Athlete Tracker on Ironmanlive.com.  Anyone wanting to track you will be able to do that through this service at no charge.  Links will be available closer to race date.  Please let me know if you have any questions.
