I don't know if I am just being a girl, but does anyone else get a little lump in their throat when you watch some of the stories and then see them cross the finish?

Have the DVR set. I've only watched the 2006 one where it was the year after the Blazeman did it and the whole roll thing and they showed him a lot. That really choked me up, especially since I'm the same age as he was. The thing that really got me motivated based on shame was the 70+ year old lady doing it. If that little old lady can do it, I damn well should be able to.

Leegoocrap - 2009-12-19 2:50 AM James, one thing I can add. Find your balance in the water! Make that your #1 priority to begin with. Finding mine made everything else 100% easier

What exactly do you mean by balance.  I'm just not sure what you are talking about.

when you can lightly kick across the pool with a shoulder/arm out of the water comfortably, float on your back (and well supported) without sinking below the hips, and just generally "feel" good in the water, you'll have your balance.

That's the biggest thing that Total Immersion did for me.

You can see the same sort of stuff at local tris.  There is always that 70+ year old rolling in at the back of the pack.  I can only hope and pray that I'm still that fit and active 40 years from now.  So inspiring to see!

Do a seach on your DVR for "triathlons" and it will record everything from local to around the world.

Good call.  Those of you with universal sports will find all sorts of triathlon coverage.  DirectTv had that channel when I first signed up, and now its gone.  They still haven't given me a satisfactory answer why

carrie639 - 2009-12-15 7:15 AM If you still have room, I would like to join the group.

Name: Carrie Matczynski

Story:

Family Status: 37 and single. 2 chocolate labs (Briggs and Bella) and 1 cat (Tag)

Current Training:  I am biking 2-4 per week, swimming 3 times per week (all strokes, so much more fun) and running 2 times per week.  I am having trouble keeping my HR down during the run (any advice would be great) and am currently having shin splint problems (gonna try a sleeve tonight)

History:  I used to play ice hockey, so training is not the problem.  I get stronger at the swim every time I go out, so that is not my problem.  I love to bike, but my lady parts hate the seat - being inside does have it disadvantages.  I seem to hold my own on the bike (not great, but certainly not horrible either) just not getting the miles in.  Still not above 21 miles.  Running is my issue.  My HR spikes while running and I have shin splints.  Running is my weakness with a 16 minute mile time and this is barely keeping my HR under 170.  HELP!!!!

2010 Races: Rev3 Knoxville olympic and the Racine 70.3 are the only 2 I am signed up for.  Want to do a few other shorter races, but Racine is my "A" race.

2009 Races: Olympic aquabike and sprint tri, both in August.  Swims went great and the bikes got better with each race.  I walked the run portion of the sprint tri (hadn't any run training, just signed up to do with a friend)

Weight Loss Goals: Lost about 14 lbs a few months ago and have held steady.  Still want to loose lots more, but seem to have trouble and I don't think its because of over eating.  I think I might not be getting enough nutrition given my schedule.

Fears:  Other than being on a swim team, I still have never trained with anyone on the bike or on a run.  I think they would be helpful, but just fear I can't keep up (especially on the run).  All my running has been on the treadmill so far as I am a weeny in the cold.

Goals: Racine 70.3 finish

Can't wait to meet and chat with all of you.

Carrie

P.S. I am still fairly new to the site, so if I need to make my stuff more snazzy, let me know how

Been on the road for business most of this week, so am just now trying to catch up with all the group's stories before heading out for my long run.  Being a total noob, I'm not sure I've got much advice to impart, but I did want to respond to something I read in Carrie's story.  You mention being slow on the run and having a pretty high heart rate while doing it.  You also mentioned you are running on a treadmill.  Something I discovered after running with a Garmin 305 outdoors and then purchasing a foot pod to use while running on the treadmill was that my treadmill was not calibrated properly.  I could never figure out why when I ran outside I would easily knock off a minute to a minute and a half off my normal, easy running pace until I ran with that foot pod inside.  The treadmill you are using could be way off.  I know you said it's cold outside, but you might want to do a couple of miles outside, time yourself, and see what happens.

As for the heart rate, I'm not sure that you'll find your heart rate on the run dropping over time.  What I have found is that you will be able to run at a faster pace for a longer time at that same heart rate.  In the reverse, if you continue to run at the same pace and the same distance you are now, you will notice a drop off in the heart rate for that pace and duration over time.  Does that make sense?

Its been crazy in Virginia this weekend with over a foot of snow.  In Va that creates a statewide emergency.  I was getting ready to get my one hour run in on the tread mill and I found the Ironman 2009 on TV for the last 15 minutes.  Definately reminds you of how much some of those folks go through to get to Hawaii.   Wow yep I do get a lump in my throat too.  For me, the lady that had the stroke and couldn't walk was amazing.    I definately ran a little harder after watching that.  Other notable: Old lady (over 70?) that had to quit 97 miles into the race and the lady with back pain that looked really bad with six miles to go.  She made it assisted, but still that was something else.

Only problem is that I keep having calf pain after long runs, but after seeing the lady with back pain so bad I could hardly watch I just sucked it up and stretched afterwards.

For me my lump sure started when they talked about the young guy that had his legs cut off at age 6 cuz they couldn't straighten them out.  It sounded like he only had hamstrings and that is why he had trouble on the bike.  Could you imagine using only hamstrings on aero bars???

Also, the guys that had 3 bouts with cancer, ruined his heart so much he needed a heart transplant.  He made it to the Hawaii Ironman only to miss the swim cutoff by 7 seconds!!!!! 7 SECONDS!  That was hard to watch cuz you know how much he went through to get there.

I will swim harder tomorrow morning at practice!!!

(I only go to watch an hr, had to run out, but will watch the rest later on tivo - good stuff)

Watched the full show on TIVO last night.  All the stories already mentioned had me welling up with tears as well.  I have to say though, probably the most poignant for me was the 79 year old gentleman at the end who managed to come in under the midnight cut off--for the 20th time in a row!  All of the stories were absolutely amazing, without a doubt.

Next time I'm feeling crappy with this little pain or that, I'm going to remember all those inspiring stories and just suck it up and get the job done, that's for sure.

Any of you guys ever get pain on the top of your foot when running? Yesterday I had to quit my run (and today I missed totally) hoping not to aggravate it. The only thing I can figure is the tongue of my shoe slid to a side and was getting pinched by my quick laces...

Strange... I wish my Saucony's had taken a cue from Nike free's and integrated the tongue.

I have that pain right now, but only my right foot and not just when running at this point.  Not sure if it is related to my shin splints, but the woman that made my orthotics said it could be the tongue of the shoe, or the laces too tight.

VERY PAINFUL . . .

Try icing now and until next run and heat and ibuprofen prior to next run.

I resorted to aqua jogging today because my shin splints are so bad.  Hopefully this pain will subside as well.

I've gotten that pain when running before, but generally that means I need new shoes. After I get new shoes and rest a few days then the pain goes away. At one point it was so bad I thought I had a stress fracture!

If it doesn't go away or if there is bruising I would go to the doc to rule a stress fracture out.

These aren't new shoes are they?

Hopefully it was just from the tongue moving around.  But as others have said keep an eye on it and hopefully with a little rest it goes away.

I had a similar pain when training for my first marathon.  I went to the doctor to have them rule out a stress fracture.  They could never tell me exactly what it was and I mainly just rested it until I could run on it.

I wouldn't say my shoes are new... probably about 150 - 200 miles on them. It was strange it happened on my short run and not on my long ones.
I probably just locked my laces down to tight...

Hey, how wiped out should I plan on being after my first Olympic? How would it compare to a half marathon, for instance?

I'm working on re-doing my race schedule now and considering Havasu on 3/21. If I did that, I'd want to fly in/out of Phoenix, but I'm wondering if I should plan on being too tired to drive three hours back down that afternoon, or not. I wouldn't be flying straight home till a couple days later, but I'd rather hang out that night in Phoenix than Havasu. If it is any more exhausting than a 1/2M, I'll just hang out. If it is easier/about the same, I'll plan to drive that day, though.

Any thoughts on how the two compare?

I've always found it hard to compare tris to pure running races since they are so different.

After my first Olympic (which also happened to be my first tri) I remember being pretty tired and sore, but not completely wiped out.  Since then the Olys I've done I have been in much better shape (ie training for HIMs) so I've been less tired afterward and they have more or less been just a hard workout to me.

I have only raced one HM and I don't remember being too wiped out to function.  I did drive two hours after a HIM last summer and I can tell you that was not fun.  I was very cramped and sore and being trapped in the car was not helping.  But apparently I don't learn my lesson since I'll be driving 5 hours back from IM Kansas this year.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it is going to totally depend on your level of fitness.  You may find it much harder or much easier than a HM.  Everyone is different.

The dashboard is at the top of your training log.  You should see an "edit" link right under the orange box that says RSS.  If you click that it will open up a box that you can type stuff in.  You can put in goals, motivational quotes, pictures, or whatever else you feel like.  Whatever you put in just make sure click the "okay" button underneath.

To add friends, click on the setting button at the top of the page.  Then click the training blog customization tab, and finally the friends tab.  Just add the bt name of your friend, click update, and a link to that person's log should show up on your log page.

So, I heard that a good way of practicing for OWS, without doing OWS was swimming with the eyes closed. Is this true? I tried it this morning and it did manage to make me very uncomfortable and have me swimming all over the place.

So, first is swimming with eyes closed good practice? Should it be total eyes closed, or only between breaths? Second, any other ways to try to simulate OWS in the pool?

Neal--thanks for pulling together that group list.  Makes things infinitely easier!

So, I'm struggling.  For those of you who came to tri from a single sport background (mine's running), was it easy for you to make the shift in training focus to multi sport?  I understand that the training principles are basically the same (stress, recovery, adaptation, the various phases of training, periodization, etc.) but how do you go from run-focused training with cycling and swimming for cross training to a true multi sport approach?  For one thing, I really love the running--but more importantly, I worked really hard to gain the level of fitness I have in running so far.  I'm so afraid that if I scale back the running a bit to allow for more focus on the biking and swimming, I'll lose the run fitness I have gained thus far.  And like all of us, there are only so many available training hours in the week.

I assume over time if you balance out the effort with perhaps increased focus on your limiters, your overall fitness level increases in all sports, but from where I'm sitting right now, that seems an impossibility.  Advice?  Thoughts?  What worked for you?
