Josh, That's a great find on the DeSoto singlet - I wish they had it in my size .  If you guys find great deals like that please post it up on the board here!

I second that. If you see websites holding huge clearance sales and the like, let everyone in the group know! I'm always on the lookout for new gear! It's a guilty pleasure of mine.

Well swim lessons kicked my again yesterday.  We did a ladder (25,50,75,100) and I couldn't even complete the 100 without resting.  On the bright side, I drank less water than on the first day.  I REALLY want to quit but instead I'm going to add a third day a week of swimming until I'm a lot more comfortable.   I think I'll never be a strong swimmer but I'm counting on the wetsuit to help a lot.

Thanks Krystyna! My wife and I are doing the race as a "fun" run for training for the Austin Marathon on Feb 14th. So I am planning on doing it at a slower 9-9:30/min pace. And if I can keep it slow recovery will be just like any other week and I won't lose any training days. Since it is going to be cold and you are an extreme vet in cold weather running (-: -- What type of base layers to you recommend? The temp is going to be 18 degrees at the start and probably in the high 20's by finish time (that is freezing for us wimpy Texans). I currently have a pair of Under Armor Heat Gear Tights I am planning on wearing but am unsure about a long sleeve base layer? I was going to go to the store later today to pick something up so any recommendations would be appreciated!

Great attitude Chris! Way to suck it up and keep with it. If it was easy everyone would do it (-:

I would definitely wear a long sleeve base layer and a wind-proof type jacket above. Also, don't forget good quality gloves. If your hands are cold, the rest of you will feel cold. Do you have a running hat? They are not made of wool, but are thinner and made of synthetic wicking material so that your head doesn't accumulate sweat.

And, although you are running in cold conditions, don't forget to hydrate. You won't lose as much water as you would if you were running in the heat, but you do still lose quite a bit. So, drink up!!

What does everyone else think?

Gloves are key. Also you might try those chemical hand warmers for pre-race.

OK, I just found out that for my tri in March, they only require wetsuits for temps below 65, and last year the water was exactly 65 degrees. I don't know what 65 degrees feels like ... but I'm guessing it must be fairly uncomfortable. Anybody have any firsthand knowledge of how tolerable this water temp is without a wetsuit?

Thanks for the cold weather advice guys!  I hit the Sports Authority and loaded up.  Nike base layer mock neck, gloves, and a hat that wicks away the sweat and it was all on sale.  And a bonus they had the Asics 2140's on sale for $49 ... a good day.

Dude, 65 degree water is cold.  Real cold!

Yeah, definitely get a wetsuit. If it's legal, you'll be so grateful you can wear it. If the water temp is above 65... swim fast!

Yeah, I was afraid you guys were going to recommend a wetsuit. So my next question would be: Have any of you rented a wetsuit before, and if so, can you recommend a good place to rent from?

Also, my shorts and singlet were delivered today. I know I look pretty silly (the look on my wife's face confirmed that), but I actually feel really good when I put that stuff on. Smile

Last question for today: Does anyone use a site (other than BT) or software to upload their training data? I got a Garmin Forerunner 305 for Christmas and I've been using the packaged software AND a program called Sports Tracks (along with manually posting on my BT Training Log) to track my training. I know I could import directly to BT, but I think that requires a Bronze membership. This whole "triathlon on a budget" thing is way harder than I thought it would be!

Hey Josh, Not too sure about the wetsuit rentals ... I do know they offer it at Xterra Wetsuits but I jave never tried it myself.

I have a Garmin FR 305 too and use the Gamin online site to upload my stats: Garmin Connect .  This offers a lot of features.  Personally, I mainly use the BT software that I enter manually. Mainly because it is easy and I am on this site alot already.

This sport can be quite expensive but it CAN be done on a budget as most of us have learned.  Just keep at it and don't get discouraged and keep asking question!

If you happen to have a job where you sit in front of a computer all day, this site: http://www.bonktown.com/ can be really good for finding gear. I bought my bike from them, and I got a smoking deal.

Thanks everyone for the positive posts about yesterday's race. I showed them to my wife and she really appreciated the comments

.X2 on Bonktown ... I got a nice transition bag for $20, it was $125 originally! you can sign up for daily emails and they give you a preview for the items going up that day.

Also, do any of you do core workouts during the week?I am thinking about adding in Ab Ripper X (the P90X core DVD) three times a week and was wondering when would be the best time to do this? The workout is only 16 minutes long but is a killer (349 reps). Would you do it before regular s/b/r workouts? After? or at a totally different time?

That is a WICKED website. I'm in love with it already. (And I think I will have to blame you for what will probably be a whole lot of purchases!)

I don't do core workouts, other than when I feel like going to yoga or if there is a waterworks at masters swimming. That's not to say that I don't think they are important. They really are. I'm just really lazy. So, hmm, if you've got a regular "stretching" time, I'd do it with that session. If not, I wouldn't do it before a s/b/r session, but maybe after a swim? Swimming really warms up ALL your muscles so you're less likely to get injured.

I do pushups a few times a week. I'll do 3 or 4 sets of 20.  I'd like to complete this challenge one day:
