Some where there is thing about black eye peas and new years.
I always do better with my nutrition when I do log it.  For me it's a matter of writing it down, just in general.  Of course I'd have to write anything down that would work some.

I'm off to Tennessee to visit MIL for a week.  Y, WIllie and a buddy of his are coming too.  I plan to run some Wii a bunch and sit on my .  The inactive athlete.  We'll shop and what not.

The race was good.  Mike and I set a goal of 9:30 and he kept pushing it.   It was  cold and snowy a little, yep Freezeroo.

On a final note i am married and have 2 girls of 5 and 10. I need to lose at least 30lbs as well. I am currently 5'11" and 235lbs

a portion of my initial entry above. below an update

ok today was weigh in Day in Mac's life, starting point is 232lbs for the weight loss challenge. No secret that i have some work to do to reduce the BMI overall. However for once i am looking forward to the challenge as i have found a new sporting direction that although is the toughest to date, I think will also deliver the best feeling of overall achievement.

Seems the right time to set some personnel goals as well. I have the date for my first Sprint tri (18th April). it is shorter than a full sprint but gives me a chance to sample how it works in a smaller field at a local event before moving onwards and upwards

Personnel Goals for January

Complete a 5km non stop by end of January ( time irrespective for jan )
Reduce 400m swim time to 9 minutes from current 10:20
Complete the 20km training ride in sub 47 minutes.
Weight loss 10lbs

If I achieve the run part of the goals. I will look to enter a winter duathlon in february

The start of a long road to achievement begins here. All the best to every member of the group.

I am following the couch to sprint free program.  It calls for each phase to be done 3 times a week, but twice a week might be all I can get to the pool.  Will this still be sufficient for a complete beginner?

I really do mean beginner!  Plus I have a ton of weight to lose.

I am starting at 274 (weight as of this morning -- 1/2/09) when 174 would still be too heavy.  I am upset I let myself gain all this weight back, but it is amazing how much better I feel even after just a couple days of jogging, a ST session the other day and eating cleaner today.

Picked out a 5k for Feb.  Gonna run in the Cupid's Cup 5K in Charlotte, NC.  Still looking for a sprint tri.  I think I am gonna do one in Rock Hill, SC on May 8.  A little concerned I can do the swim, but my 40th is middle of May and my goal is to complete the tri right around my bday.

I will do well to be able to run the entire 5k by mid Feb!

Jon ,Way to get some races in your future...I find that to be the best motivation to get moving...slow and steady..and have funAdded a 5k trail run for the end of January, and a 5 mile trail run for the end of February, some local friends want me to do a 1/2 Marathon in May, hmmmmm I have to figure out how to get my mileage up on the runs, without changing my tri plan too much. longest run to date is a 6 mile trail run.....

You can do this Jon. You've done it once before

2 yrs ago I started running -- actually walking and built up to running.  I could not complete .25 miles without walking when I started.  I was also about 290lbs @ 5'8".  Not good!  Within a few months I lost about 70lbs and ran a 5k.  I had never ran more than a mile at one time and that was only because I had to on the first day of football practice in HS and college.

How great did you feel when you dropped to 220lbs? thats what you need to keep in mind. the end game or even the mid point if 174 is your final goal. Good luck in your goals for 2010, that would be a rockin 40th to complete your first tri on the same weekend.

Number one goal ti to crush M-daddy in weight loss, right now I can just crush him with my weight.
Starting weight 205.  Ten pounds heavier then last year at this time.

My Freezeroo goal is to run up Mt Misery in the Powder Mill 1OK ish.

Please weight to me  PM or put it out here.   I'll keep track in my STGs.  To me it's about the poundage gone.
Winner for January and Feb.  One big winner.  Mike and I will come up with a prize for the month awards.

My weight will be in my training logs.  I was also 10 lbs above where I was on 1/1/09.  My goal is to get to 145 and decrease my  body fat by 10 percent (last time I was measured at the gym I was in the low 30's).  Hopefully next year at this time, I will have accomplished all this.

Hey Chip,How does one go about figuring % of body fat? Do I need special instruments, or should I have someone at the gym figure?ThanksBruce

Hey Bruce,

There are several ways to do this, most of which aren't especially accurate.  The easiest way is bioelectrical impedance, like a scale that displays % body fat.  The trick, I've found, is to always measure at the same time in the same condition.  I measure first thing in the morning, before I've had anything to eat or drink.  It may only be accurate to within 5-10%, but I use the measurements to see which way I'm trending more than anything else.  And I've measured at enough places to know I'm somewhere around 25%.  I'm sure your gym has some scales or a hand-held device that does this.

Here's a link to a brief overview:  http://www.annecollins.com/body-fat-calculators.htm

I too use a weiging machine. Not sure on accuracy. But I believe it gives a good guide to where you sit. Variation has generally been within a % and weight has stayed fairly static.

Case and point on food logging:

I know popped corn isn't very good for me, but how bad for my fat loss diet can it be really?  I asked my wife if she wanted some popped corn this afternoon, made it the usual way (on the stove with Smart Balance oil and Orville's corn; no butter), divided it into two bowls - one for each of us.  Then I decided I'd check it out before I ate it.

My bowl had 850 calories, 88% of that from fat.  I'd be better off drinking a 6 pack of beer.  Much better off.  So no popped corn for me today.  Lots of carrot sticks though.

Do yourself a favor and buy yourself an air popper (and better popcorn). I use popcorn from a local guy in an air popper and it's good even without butter/oil - but if you must add, a tablespoon or two drizzled over the top won't turn it into a ridiculous splurge, but instead a decent-for-you snack. (Whole grains! Ha!) Apparently this is what I should have been eating for the last two months instead of all those lovely baked treats...

208.5, and at 5'4", that means you all have something to worry about in the percent-lost department.

I once new a guy that lost 90 lbs on a popcorn. He ate nothing but popcorn for a entire year.  Last I saw he had picked it back up.

Popcorn is my favorite snack...especially at night with a glass of OJ, I am addicted to that sour and salty taste...I may have to start limiting just to the weekends. I only eat the home style, light salt and very light butter, just thinking about it I get cravings.....

Ideally popcorn is a whole grain healthy right?  Yep it is the butter, salt, cheese and even sugar added to it that is bad.
Thanks for the weights we have a good start to a great finish.  No to go chase down M-daddy.

Good morning kids.  I'm going to try and log or at least try to comment on my nutrition every day.  You can call me on it.  Make changes in our diet takes knowing what the hell we are eating in the first place.

I'm not a big reader but trying to finish Race Weight.  maybe a review when we are down.

Good Morning Everybody! ok. so my start weight is 145.5. Doesn't sound too bad....of course I am only 5'3"- if I stand up really straight and give myself a quarter inch....according to wii fit (which a friend loaned me yesterday), my bmi is 26.58 and should be 22 which means I need to drop 20 lbs. I knew that any way...
The stupid machine also added 5 years to my age. Also asked me if I have trouble walking...do I trip a lot? WTF? I am going to retest on it tonight. That was just rude and mean....But kind of funny! At least my husband thought so. Probably funnier because it put his Wii age at -3...meaning he is with an older woman. Oh yeah...heard about that allllll night.
