firedawg44 - 2011-03-14 9:57 AM Hi all! Just had an awesome weekend in SG..weather was perfect, sunny, warm, and light winds. Saturday ride was 67 miles (res to town, then one loop) and Sunday ran one lap of course. Here's the skinny...bike was beautiful, and challenging. If you're in Vegas, then ride Silverman course, as well as red rock loop and highway, up to potosi. Lots of steady climbing with 3-4 steep short hills (11-12%) where I was only doing 6-7 mph...I have a 53/39 and a 11/26 in back. Don't try to be a tough guy or gal and mash it up with only a 23 or even 25 in the back...after veyo, one more gradual climb, then the fun downhill..but even with light winds there was a headwind, and being aero paid off. I was even spun out in my 11 for awhile. No cattle guards o this fast downhill, there are 2-3 on long climb, still, use caution. Road surface was a bit smoother on downhill, with a couple short section of rough chip seal. road on climb was mostly all rough chip seal.Run course was very cool, and not as bad as I thought, but then again I have been running the 13 miles scenic red rock loop here in Vegas. So, if you live elsewhere, find hills! Rolling hills and steep hills! As they said in the Army "train as you fight, you'll fight as you train"...if no hills, well, go to a high rise or stadium and do stairs. Moral of the story: get low gears, stay cool (mentally) on the bike, and just steel yourself for the run. You have heard it before on here and other forums. If you can swing coming out for some pre rides and runs, do it. I am heading back up next weekend for one more go at the course, so if you wanna join me let me know! For you Vegas peeps, we are lucky- we got some awesome training grounds...

Thanks for the report. I was sorry to have missed the ride I had family come to town. This weekend I am doing an open water swim at Lake Las Vegas. Let me know if you go up 1st of April or last week of March.

Funny, at this time last year, this thread was up to page 21 (and ended at 54 post-race). Makes me wonder if not as many "beginner triathletes" will be doing IMSG again or even as a first attempt.

I was looking at the participant list, and by last name letter "I" there are only 8 other women in my age group 40-44(I have to finish counting the rest) vs. last year had 115.

There seems to be a definitely larger proportion of men than last year.

My original goal was to go for top 20, but considering there may be only 20 women in my AG, I need to revise this, but top 10 seems awfully scary.

I just grabbed the list from the site and stuck it in a DB. (geek out!)

Looks like the total count is:

M: 1597
W: 347

Women 40-44 is actually 48, but a lot less than the 117 you mentioned last year.

Men 40-44 (my age group) is 317, and as I recall last year we were pushing 430? Also, it looks like it is skewing younger as this year 35-39 is the largest age group, while 40-44 was the biggest last year.

Here are the age group numbers:

m < 206
m 20-2479
m 25-29183
m 30-34272
m 35-39335
m 40-44317
m 45-49191
m 50-54119
m 55-5957
m 60-6426
m 65-6911
m 70-741
m 75-790
m 80+0
 1597

f < 201
f 20-2420
f 25-2962
f 30-3458
f 35-3978
f 40-4448
f 45-4945
f 50-5425
f 55-594
f 60-646
f 65-690
f 70-740
f 75-790
f 80+0
 347

I wish I was doing the half Showdown! I did the International distance two years ago and had a great time (even on a rental road bike). The swim is cold enough to be a good test prior to SG. Good Luck!!!

Douglas,
Quick question...are you planning on wearing a skull cap and/or booties at St George? Because it would be great to try them out at the Showdown. I just did a 10 minute practice swim before SG last year, but would have felt more comfortable going longer. The whole swim I worried about something going wrong (which actually made the swim feel like it flew by).

Kuotaguy, thank you for the advice, I appreciate it!  yeah, I live in Southern California (North of LA south of Santa Barbara) many of my practice swims are in the  ocean and the water rarely gets above 60 degrees... I wear a skull cap,and occasionally booties ... so I do have experience using them. I'm using Showdown as a tune up for St George. This will be my first race that I've had a coach... (I've done 5 - 140.6 races and numerous 70.3's and Olympic distances)... soooooo.... if what I do at sundown works then I'm doing the same at Utah... if it doesn't work ... I got six weeks to tri to make it better!

Thanks for the stats, transition four! I see my age group (35-39) has the most..great! But being this is my first IM, I just want to finish somewhere in the middle...I read your blog, and your comment about tubulars (rolling off rim in a corner)...i am about to buy some carbon wheels that take tubulars, and now you got me scared! Anyone else on here want to chime in on if tubulars are 'all that'?

Mikroy - yeah, I am going back up this weekend for a double Veyo loop on saturday, and another lap of the run on sunday...then one more weekend, 4/2-4/3...that should be good. We got plenty of good roads around here in vegas. But it is a good confidence builder to actualy ride/run the course once or twice...

We noticed that our ages are incorrectly listed on the site - and the ages of our local friends who are doing the race. We are all listed as being 2 years younger than we are (wouldn't that be nice!). So that may be why the stats are looking as though there are more younger entrants.

Mine's off too.  If it's supposed to age at end of year, it's 2 years off for me, but it doesn't change my AG.

Hey firedawg44, I'm going down to St. George this weekend too. Similar plan -- ride course Saturday (I'd like to ride the whole thing if we can figure out the vehicle placement), then one loop run Sunday. Wave me down if you see me (on a black & white cervelo p2c -- bringing the full kit so I'll have the hed tri-spokes on).

I'm not an expert, but I've seen a ton of comment threads on the whole tubular/clincher debate. They range from "It's no big deal if you know what you're doing, and I wouldn't ride anything else" to "the new clinchers are just as good, and the tires are easier to change."

Personally, I'm sticking with clinchers. Someone the other day told me "the reason the pros ride tubulars is because they have a support car with a whole new wheel if they flat -- they'll never sit on the road trying to peel off their glued on tire". Makes sense to me. But, then again I give myself a pinch flat about half the time when I change a tire.

For those doing the race that live in cold climates how has the training been going? Lots of trainer rides? Thinking of doing it in 2012 and not sure whether i want to take the plunge and train all winter. Would be nice though to not have the summer completely dominated by training. Let me hear how it went for you guys and good luck. You are almost to taper!!

Ok, so I spent the weekend making up an infographic with some stats from last year and this year's participation lists from St. George. The interesting thing is that the numbers from last year come from from a participation list in August '09, nine months out from the race!

The race has definitely scared off a few people!

+1 on the great infographic.

With declining numbers in registration and not selling out in only year 2 and the timing for the race (very early in the season), makes me wonder how long this race will be around...

I hope the training is going well for you all.  Does anyone have any advice for a 1st timer?  I have only done one other triathlon (Silverman 70.3). I am starting to get that scared nervousness about this race.

Glad you guys liked the graphic.

I hope the race does stick around for the long haul. And, I think the fact that the race seems to be gaining appeal to a young demographic (men < 35, women < 30 were all up significantly) would make it the kind of race WTC would want to promote. It is the kind of event that would appeal to some people that might be more inclined towards Xterra type races I think.

Another interesting fact that didn't make it into the graphic was that international registrations were way up, nearly doubled from last year. I don't know if that is because of a building reputation, the fact that registration has been available for longer, a cheaper dollar, or some combination. But, it would be cool if this race built into something like Lanzarote -- a race known as one of the most difficult Ironman races.

The Silverman Half was probably a good one to prepare. The bike won't be quite as bad as that course (just longer). The run is harder, but you can always do the run/walk strategy up the steepest hills and you'll hardly lose any time.

Biggest mistake I made last year, my first full IM, was that I didn't eat or drink nearly enough until probably 80 miles into the bike. And, I skipped some aid stations on the run, leading to a major bonk at about mile 9. This year, I'm going to start hydrating and get some food down immediately in that first 20 miles from Sand Hollow to the start of the loop.

And, I'm going to pace myself much more in that first loop of the bike. Ideally I'll negative split the two loops.

But, honestly the crowd and volunteers are so good that  they actually give you a good boost on the course. It really helps.
