I clocked a very pleasing 7 mile run today in 54.34 and am very happy with that! Enjoy new years day! Happy New Year T, we are now doing this year's UK 70.3 as opposed to next year's which it has been up until now, big difference!! Ran just over 5 miles this morning at 7.30 pace, nice little blast to open the year and blow away last night's cobwebs! |

You must have some natural talent on the bike, being able to ride 92 miles in such short order. I managed to get out for my first workout of 2011 -- a nice ride and run. Two out of three kids managed to make it to midnight last night, but their a little cranky today from lack of sleep. We'll make sure to get to bed early tonight! |

I've been looking at indoor bike trainers and was wondering if anyone can recommend which brand to look at and which brand to stay away from. Thanks. Jason, there are many types of trainer. Most people prefer the feel of the fluid trainers. The kinds of resistance that they offer is reasonably similar to what you feel on the road. As for brands, the two that come up again and again as ones people like are CycleOps and Kurt Kinetic. I have a CycleOps and I like it though I do have to say that the fluid started leaking after about 8 months. They replaced it free of charge and my current one seems to be fine, so I guess it was just a fluke. You might find this site useful: http://biketrainerreviews.com/ Happy shopping! |

Instead, I had this weird idea that it is necessary to slay yourself every time you run, and as a result, I hated it and quickly got injured. What you're doing is much smarter. |

Champion 7595 Columbia, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Experior's Mentor Group - CLOSED I want to encourage everyone again to use the logs here on BT. If for whatever reason you cannot or do not wish to, do log your training somewhere. It really is useful. (The main advantage to doing it here on BT is that they are very easy to use, and when you ask questions, you can refer people to your logs and you'll get much better answers that way. Yes, people really do look at your logs before they answer. (At least, those who tend to give the most helpful advice do.) I'll start checking everybody's logs on a regular basis, beginning tomorrow. I promise to try to make useful or at least encouraging comments to anyone who is logging. If you're just getting started with them, you should probably first go to 'Settings' (top center of every page) and customize it as you wish. You can also use your logs to put in a training plan. This is a great way to help with that consistency thing -- start with a plan and try to stick to it! The plans here on BT can be automagically 'imported' into your 'planned training' calendar, or you can make your own plan. |

Regular 155 | Subject: RE: Experior's Mentor Group - CLOSED Thanks, Michael. Your suggestions are great and I will try on the main forum. I appreciate your post on consistency and like the idea of making "appointments" for workouts. Hey, Laura, Great job! It is really cool to realize you can go farther than you thought. That happened to me in the pool one day last year when I was learning how to swim, I kept stopping because I thought I was out of breath and then one day I realized I had stopped and I was not out of breath and that was a breakthrough. And Tiernan, your picture reminds me of all the years I spent on the sidelines with the other wives watching our husbands play rugby. My kids grew up on the sidelines and traveling to matches. My husband kept saying "this is my last year" and then he would go to see a game and pretty soon he would be playing again. I am going to make out my calendar with my scheduled appointments for workouts. Short run on the treadmill for me today trying out some new shoes. (otherwise, would NEVER run on the treadmill-I hate it too) Has anybody tried the Newtons? Not sure how I feel about them yet. Jan |

Keiser Spin Bike Hill Session Base Gear = 12 Warm up 15 mins Main Session - Repeat 3 times L17 x 1 min L18 x 1 min L19 x 1 min L20 x 1 min L19 x 1 min L18 x 1 min L17 x 1 min L12 x 2 min Cool Down x 8 minutes My main race in 2011 (along with T) is the UK 70.3 in June. It is recognised as one of the toughest on the circuit due to the amount of climbing on the bike (52 hills in the 56 miles), and the run is up and down too. A few of the guys from the club raced it last year, said it was immensley tough but a hell of a race. It will be my biggest challenge to date, survive this one and I'll look at Ironman in 2012 (Hey T, are you up for that too?!) Have a great day folks x |

Jan Hi Jan, I know what you mean re the treadmill, I call it the 'dreadmill' only use it when I do a brick session in the gym or recently the paths here were icy for most of December. I have tried Newtons and didn't get along with them. I'm a heel striker, ie land on my heels when running and they just didn't suit me and felt uncomfy. However a couple of friends love them so again as with everything in the sport it's a personal thing, whatever feels comfortable. Neil x |

Regular 90 Port Moody | Subject: RE: Experior's Mentor Group - CLOSED Hi Jan, I bought a pair of Newtons in November and still can only use them for short runs. I have had achillies and calf troubles for quite some time so it might not have been the best idea. I really like the way they feel and help you become a forefoot striker but for me it's just not going to work for longer distances. I can still wear them for short runs and speed work but thats it. A couple friends have them and they love them. Wish I could use them more I like them, like the fit, super light, make me feel fast even though I know I'm not. |

Member 109 Griffin, Georgia | Subject: RE: Experior's Mentor Group - CLOSED First, a question. In doing the training as outlined in the Sprint-3x balanced-20 week, it says that if you are new to endurance it is best to spend the first year working on building volume. I take that to mean that you should just go as far as you can at a good training pace within the time. As you continue to train you will be able to go farther within the time allotted and also be able to train longer. Is my understanding of this correct? |

New user 11 Seattle, WA | Subject: RE: Experior's Mentor Group - CLOSED Wow, your dedication impresses me! I haven't worked out at all this year so far (hmm I guess 2 days isn't so bad) because I tweaked my back and have been laid up on the couch! Argh! It is feeling better with a Thermawrap and some advil and I'm hoping that by tomorrow afternoon I'll be up for a light run...playing it by ear though unfortunately. What a way to start the year! :-P I'm anxious to hear some advice from anyone who has it regarding purchasing a bike. I've never done a triathlon and while I think I will love it (just like I think I'm actually Italian, although I've never been to Italy.......) I don't want to break the bank on my first bike. I keep thinking I would like to keep the expenses as minimal as possible and if I love it, then upgrade to a nicer bike next year. Thoughts? Tips? I'm loving reading everyone's posts. What motivation to have this group. I look forward to getting to know you all as the year gets going and seeing what we can all do! Thanks Michael for facilitating! Happy New Year, all! Hannah |

New user 11 Seattle, WA | Subject: RE: Experior's Mentor Group - CLOSED Also, been thinking about this awhile... I'm a slow slow slow runner. I know I will never run a 6 minute mile (or 7 or probably 8 for that matter), but I'm curious -- How much do you think you can you improve your speed? And what are some techniques to get there? I'm trying to incorporate speed work into my routine, but I struggle with it a bit and don't really know the best way to go about it. I used to be a sprinter, but it's tough for me to combine speed and distance (and my heart rate shoots through the roof!) So what do you all think? What are the best ways to improve your speed besides just running, running and running some more? |

Regular 155 | Subject: RE: Experior's Mentor Group - CLOSED Hi, Newton's are a brand of shoes. They are supposed to encourage you to do more of a mid to forefoot strike as far as what I understand. They were recommended to me by a corrective exercise therapist several years ago but when I saw the price I was appalled and never bought them. I am not sure they are a good idea or not, it was just my birthday and I decided to treat myself since I was in the market for new running shoes. 1 mile on "dreadmill" - I like that term, I think it was Nick? who said that- with them today, a little weird feeling. If I don't run outside in them the store will take them back. Off to try to figure out the training logs and put in today's workout! Jan |

What are the best ways to improve your speed besides just running, running and running some more? Without knowing a bit more about you its difficult one for me to answer, but from personal experience my advice to anyone starting out and when I say starting out running I class myself as that too, which is someone who is taking running seriously for the 1st time rather than just a part of your gym routine) is to really just crank up the milage over a period of time, atleast a year. I have found my body change shape and muscles adapt to running over the past 12 months. Over time clocking up the milage you will see yourself get quicker. To keep things interesting for me I have several routes I run regularly, a 3 mile, 4.5 mile, 6 mile and 7 mile. When i run i compare my time at the end of the run (I love logging my stats and use BT and Garmin Connect) , I know i need to hold back on the longer and on shorter runs I now know my long run pace so up it for the shorter runs. By having different distance runs and a different pace for each run I have seen a positive knock on affect to the times on all courses over a period of time (this is where my year comes in). I put this down to clocking up milage and seeing my body change and adapt to running and by having a variety of runs available to me with different pace requirements. Not an expert opinion, just what has worked for me. So I wont be writing a book any time soon ! All the best T |

Veteran 235 eastleigh | Subject: RE: Experior's Mentor Group - CLOSED Quick question on nutrition. Since its Xmas in the uk its Tangerine / nectarine season and we have them in abundance. So i am eating 2 on the bike and one on a run and they seem to be working for me, what are your thoughts on oranges and training / racing ? will they cause tummy problems on a long bike / run ? I have also got into the habit of making my own sports drink basically 1/3 OJ or a fruit juice 2 /3 water and a sprinkle of salt. I have this during and after a workout, again any comments on fruit juices causing upset tummy as i may have this as my race drink ? |
