Master 2372 | Subject: RE: BamaDC's Mentor Group v3.0 - OPEN Donto - 2010-12-30 1:25 PM BamaDC - 2010-12-30 2:16 PM My test data. Jorge snuck in a 5 minute test. 20 min - 261 watts, 167 bpm 5 min - 303 watts, 174 bpm 3 min - 318 watts, 178 bpm That sneaky Jorge! I was wondering what the real world diff in the 5' vs 3' would be. Last year doing the 5's I was 35-40w higher than the 20', about what you had. The extrapolation chart Jorge had last year in the SS showed that the 3' should be about another 35 higher or about 70w from the 20'. I think someone posted on that thread a 100w 20' vs 3' delta and I didn't think that should be right but everyone has their strengths and weakness. I think I, in part, am the cause of the extra test. Got in an academic argument over whether 0,0 is a valid point or not. I still say it is. Jorge evidently disagreed and to get a better linefit I guess he felt compelled to add another measurement level. Sorry about that! 20' vs 3' should be percentage related rather than absolute. I was 75watts higher on the 3' (346w) vs 20'(270w), but I am a pretty normal sized guy. The two guys who crushed the test on an absolute basis (310w CP) and had spreads over 100w were both big guys - 85kg and 95kg. Funny enough of the guys that posted their scores to the online spreadsheet the top end was bunched up at 3.4-3.5w/kg. So it evened out once weight was taken into account. I am currently recovering from a back injury, so I am not running (but in PT and working towards it), but am swimming, biking, and strength training. I have faster friends that I have to keep up with. That's helped too. You don't call, you don't write anymore. Dumped by faster friends. I see how it is! (Seriously, it sounds like a good result is coming in February.) On my end, Bad news: This sickness has kept me from running for four days. Slept 16 hours yesterday. Bleh. Good news: I'm a lot closer to race weight - lost at least 7 lbs. My Christmas consumption and then some has been removed. And I'm gonna run today, no matter what. Stupid question: I got myself up to 35 miles last week. This week will be ~15 due to illness. I was hoping for something more like 30. I will now have 6 weeks left until Mercedes. Any detrimental effects to my training? Or just treat this as a step back week and keep building for the next 5? Advice from y'all would be helpful. Sounds like we have some more good runners in the group! Awesome. I can swim and I can bike (kinda), but goodness I stink at running. The more of y'all around to help out the better. I would take it as a recovery week and continue to build. But keep Roberts #5 in mind. Edited by BamaDC 2010-12-30 10:00 PM |

Bike ride is through Camp Pendleton, so no worries about traffic, but also no spectators and it's windy and hilly. Run is a two loop course along the coast and very flat. First off, welcome! This is a good group of folks. Second, just to let you in on a secret most don't know - ocean swims are way, way better than any other type of swim. Much more fun than a murky lake, and infinitely better than swimming in that cube following the black line. Unless you drink several big gulps. Then they can reek havock for the remaining 138.2 miles of your day! Lesson learned the hard way. I like the murky lake and river swims. I don't really want to know whats down there. croyston -- you're going to really like Oceanside! I did it last year and it was the best tri I ever raced. The harbor swim is great and you never really hit the ocean until just under the halfway mark where you start the turn anyway. It's not as cold as you would think based on the temp, but a heavy swim cap is a must. My advice... bike, bike, bike... that course is for real... and the second climb is the sleeper. |

Veteran 341 Orangevale, CA | Subject: RE: BamaDC's Mentor Group v3.0 - CLOSED Sorry that I've been MIA, been fighting a cold for the last couple of days and have not felt like being on the computer. To answer some of the questions / comments thrown my way: Training Plan: I had originally started the 20 week HIM plan here on BT, but too much work and lots of rain in California have derailed that plan. I am starting the 12 week Oly-to-HIM Bridge plan on the 9th. I'm going into my HIM with the goal of having an enjoyable race while experiencing a HIM for the first time. If I do a second HIM, that's when I will be more focused on a time goal, etc. Oceanside HIM: I'm looking forward to this race. I'm glad that the run is very flat, which I am counting on making my first HIM a little more enjoyable Jonathan - I found the following detailed map of the bike route. I haven't confirmed the turn-by-turn details, but does this look accurate to you? I've got a hill in mind that will help me train for the 1st and 3rd hill, I just need to find a nice long hill for the 2nd hill. ( Oceanside HIM Bike ) Overall Training: I am severely lacking in swim training at this time. This should be the one discipline that I can do with the bad weather, but have been a wimp about getting out and swimming in the cold / rain (wish I had a nice indoor pool to use). I've been working on my running, but have been limited to a reoccurring calf strain. I plan on HTFU and hit the training hard with the new year. Hope everyone has a great New Year celebration and here's to a super 2011 ! Cheers! Chris |
