Subject: BamaDC's Mentor Group v3.0 - CLOSED

NAME: BamaDC / Mark
STORY:
In 2005 my wife (Amanda) wanted to run a Marathon.  And said, “you should do it to.”  So I started training in July of 05 and ran my first marathon in Feb. 06, the Ocala Marathon (4:15:30).

My quick increase in running volume lead to some overuse injuries.  This caused me to start attending spinning classes.  The teachers were all cyclist and they took my under their wings and I started cycling.  And I swam competitively until the 9th grade, so what the heck… I’ll do a triathlon.  I did a few races in 06, nothing that special… well that’s another topic.  I didn’t race any tris in 07, because we had our first child and it was my last year of Professional School.

So in 08 I went all out.  I finished Ironman Louisville in 14:19 and improved my half marathon time by 8 min.  1:50 in Feb 08 to a 1:42 in Nov 08.

2009 was year two.  I finished my second Ironman Louisville in 11:36, first Half Ironman in 5:26, dropped my half marathon time to 1:32 and had my first triathlon top ten overall.

2010 was year three.  I had a PR at the HIM distance 5:02 and had a couple of top ten overalls.  I took it easy this year and spent more time with the family.

FAMILY STATUS: Married to a fellow triathlete and going on 7 years.  Three sons (Thomas) 4yo, William 2yo and Matthew 2 months old.

CURRENT TRAINING: Focusing on running a sub 1:30 Half Marathon in February.  Then I'll be focusing on a sub 2:20 for an Olympic and sub 5:00 for HIM.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: Mercedes Half Mary 1:31, Florida 70.3 5:02, Rocketman Olympic 2:24

2011 RACES: Mercedes Half Mary, Buster Britton Tri, Heel Crank Duathlon, Wet Dog Tri, Mountain Lakes Tri, RocketMan Oly, Augusta 70.3, and a several other running races.

WEIGHTLOSS:  I'm currently at 173 pounds and should be around 167 by my February Half Mary.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD
MENTOR:  I've got three years of triathlon training and racing under my belt.  I've also been able to do this while keeping a healthy marriage and enjoying my three boys.  I enjoy helping people and let's have some FUN!

Checking back in.

Ran a nice 6 miler today at 7:55 pace.  Decently hilly, 36F and slushy - ick.  And I'm sick, so this wasn't too terribly bad.

Repost of my last message from the other thread.  My current Plans for 2011:

Mercedes Half Marathon
Cheaha Challenge
Pensacola 5k swim
Buster Britton Triathlon
Peavine Falls 8.2 mile
Mountain Lakes Triathon
Rocketman Triathlon
Six Gap Century
Alabama Coastal Tri
AL State Time Trial Championship (40k)
Bourbon Chase

We had somewhere between 3 and 4 inches.  Awesome, but I ready for it to be gone.

I'm doing the Ironman 70.3 California in Oceanside ( north of San Diego ).

It's about an 8 hour drive from home, so the family and I will drive down a couple of days before the race.

It's an ocean swim ( my first ), but it's in the harbor so the water is suppose to be calm.  Bike ride is through Camp Pendleton, so no worries about traffic, but also no spectators and it's windy and hilly.  Run is a two loop course along the coast and very flat.

20 min CP of 261 watts at an average HR of 167 bpm.  That makes my FTP 250.

It's hard to believe I've lost that much fitness since peaking at the end of August.  My FTP was in the 280s.

Wow! Those look like awesome numbers to me. mine was only 209 watts at average HR or 159. Sort of disappointed in that. I thought I would have done better. I was pretty wiped out afterwards though.

First off, welcome!  This is a good group of folks.  Second, just to let you in on a secret most don't know - ocean swims are way, way better than any other type of swim.  Much more fun than a murky lake, and infinitely better than swimming in that cube following the black line.

Unless you drink several big gulps. Then they can reek havock for the remaining 138.2 miles of your day! Lesson learned the hard way.

I like the murky lake and river swims.  I don't really want to know whats down there.

I opened my tri gifts way early, like the first of December.  Specialized trivents and some look keo.  The pedals are very  smooth.  The cleats are way easier to walk in as compaired to the speedplay cleats

Mark,
I'd like to hang out with your Mentor group.

I have a HM on Feb 6th that I'm currently training for and am looking to drop my PR 2 minutes, sure would love to have a group to 'get my arse out the door'!  After that its Jorge's cycling plan and some sort of swim training plan to get ready for a very competivite Sprint on June 5th.
