LAURA -

Congratulations! You are the recipient of 25 coveted Namesake Bonus Points, having the same name as my mother had! (Laura, that is -- not Ostrowski. She was a Roberts. Laura Edna Roberts. If you just so happen to have Edna as a middle name, you get 9,000,000 of those bonus points. Aren't too many Ednas anymore, are there?) But I digress!

Great run (as it were...) for you last year, knocking off those races AND losing so much weight. Just curious --were there any 10kms in the '10 mix, or was it just a bunch of 5ers and then the half? Any thoughts of a 10km or two this coming season?

Which Irongirl are you looking at? Most of them are sprints, but I think the odd oly is in their slate as well. Many women love doing Irongirl events for their first foary into triathlon, and while I think that practically any triathlon features wonderful camaraderie, I undersatnd that it is waywayway above and beyond the normal at Irongirl races. So, good choice!

Whereabouts in WI are you? Not that that should be much of a limiter, as pretty much all of the state is vibrant for triathlon. Good neck of the woods to be doing what you're doing, I do believe!

I sense that you're not about to let much hold you back at this stage of your life, yes? Can't get on the bike much in a Wisconsin winter? So it's off to spin classes! Lost 75 pounds? Gonna lose about 40 more! Many races in '10 ---- "probably more" in '11!

"Getting stronger every day!"? I guess!!

Ah.....I see I'm going to have to brush up on my (admittedly non-existant) Latin if I'm to interpret your signature line. You cad, you!

(However, I am fully fluent at "illegitimum non carborundum"!)

A firm resolve does not know how to weaken.- From American Fliers with Kevin Costner. not a great movie IMO but a good quote, the movie characters modified it to "once you get it up, keep it up"

My brother, who is far more scholarly than I am, or anyone should be, disputes the translation and the grammar but I usually stop listening to him after a couple of minutes so I cant explain his point.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good starting plan.  I am a horrible swimmer so I would like a plan with a slow start to swimming, also I need to take the run slowly because I have hip and lower back problems.  I have not had problem with my hip or back since I have taken up stretching every morning before and after my gym sessions.  I will be sticking with sprints for the most part, I would like to complete an Olympic this year (2011) but would not mind sticking with sprints.  What do you guys think of going to the Olympic distance this year?

Also Where could I find a posting of races local to me?

stevebradley - 2010-12-29 5:45 AM JOHANNE - Sorry to have stresed you out yesterday, leaving you in limbo like that. Believe me, I was quite stressed out as well. We were along the Northway (upper Route 87) in a limited-cell area, and Jane was using her Blackberry to try to find out how amny people who posted yesterday, and all I could see on the horizon was the prospect of getting home late in the evening and having a total of 43 people in the group! Argghhh! But Jabe was able to PM Ron to close the group, and that happened just about perfectly; I think we are at 25 right now. 25 is good.........but 43? ARGGHHH!! Anyhow, thank you for assuming he best and posting your bio before getting oficial red-letter confirmation. (Truth told, had the group closed and I found your bio after the fact, I couldn't've turned you away anyhow, so you covered yourself well. Nicely played! ) You had a very eventful season, especially if I see it correctly that in addition to the sprints and oly there were 4 half-marathons. That IS 4 isn't it? As in four/for/fore? 4? If so, i guess it's safe to say that you have tumbled into that world of just about the sweetest distance to undertake! I love half-marathons, but don't do near enough of them anymore. I put 97% of my eggs into the multisport basket, and that just doesn't leave much time or energy for straight road races. I did a half-mar in mid-October and was ecstatic with a 1:37, so I might make a point to do aone or two each year. We'll see! Which were the races you did in '10, and what ones are you planning for '11? I try to keep up with CA races just to further fuel my fantasy of racing out there at some point, so you can inspire me by naming names! Are any of the '11 ones returns to what you did this past season? It's always good to have one or two races that you return to every so often , just to make improvements over time easier to chart. Looking more closely at your sched, I see two half-irons, and something you slipped in a few lines above it -- a marathon in March. Wich one is that, may I also ask? I followed Higdon in my initial marathoning days, and he worked well for me. I suspect he has re-tooled his programs about ten-fold since then (late 90s), but the essence of his approach must be about the same. I'm glad you found the vibe at the triathlons so favorable. That is certainly what I feel, and it never really ceases to amaze me. And just wait until you get into a race where there are professionals! It is REALLY amazing how friendly and helpful and supportive they can be of us "mere" age-groupers, so very different from most professional athletes. Fianlly, congrats on the impressive weight-loss, and even more so with sustaining it by committing to an aggressive exercise/workout/race regimen. Mercy! (And are you a happyhappyhappy Giants fan.......or do your affections sit with the Athletics?)

    Steve,
I was hoping that by submitting my bio I could slip in. My plan worked! Thanks for including me and I'm really looking forward to getting to know everyone. I'm glad you and Jane got back safely. What a day.

Yes, in 2010 I did 4 1/2 Marathons. I'm not quite sure how that happened! In 2009 Dave and I did our first 1/2 M and then landed up doing 5 in 6 months. Each one had it's own story (meeting friends, running with one of our daughters, destination race, etc.) and we couldn't help ourselves. I'm not very fast (your 1:37 is very impressive!) but I like the distance. I think my PR is 2:21.

The tri's I did in 2010 were the March Sprint Tri, Silicon Valley Sprint, Santa Cruz Sprint and the Pacific Grove Oly. The 1/2 marathons were the Jungle Run (small local race), Disneyland, San Jose Rock n Roll and the Vegas Rock n Roll.

In 2011 I'm going to run my first marathon. I signed up for the Napa Valley Marathon in early March. I'm excited and scared at the same time. Normal I guess. I usually run by myself but I have 2 friends that also signed up so we're going to try to do our long runs together. We'll see how that goes. I think they are a little faster than me. Then for tri's, I'm going to do the Tempe Oly in May (it's a few days before my daughters graduation from ASU so it worked into my plan), Almaden Oly in June(same location as last year but oly instead of a sprint), Vineman 70.3 in July, Pacific Grove Oly (repeat from last year) and I'll finish the year with the Redrock 1/2 IM in Tempe. Dave and I are also going to do a Century ride in September which should be lots of fun. I've been riding a hybrid bike this past season and I just got my first road bike for Christmas. Yea me!

While it was fun to watch the Giants in the World Series, we're Dodger fans from way back. We're originally from L.A. Still a Chiefs fan from our years in Kansas City too

Off to get my run in. Catch you all later.

    STEVE-
Wow, for a two fingered typist you’re really getting the Posts out!

I’m amazed at how many places you have competed!

Caught the Canadianism “eh”…   Have done Multisport and TriSport here in Ontario.  Milton, Gravenhurst, and Huntsville… not the Muskoka Ironman, just to be clear!  The swimming for the Huntsville and Muskoka tri’s are right out my back door so lots of fun to watch, and a good way to have originally been motivated to get started.  Biking events have included Spin the Lakes in Muskoka and Eleuthera Ride for Hope.  I’ve never done a running event, at least not for a few years… since high school.

Yes, I am now in living in Reston for almost a year full time.  It’s a bit of a culture shock, as life in the DC area seems “Competitive” in general.  Doesn’t seem to matter whether you’re putting your child in some sport, standing in line at the grocery store, or driving… everyone is competitive.  It might not be as bad as that, but it’s definitely not the small town culture I’ve been immersed in for the last 10 years.

Which brings me to the good and the bad on the Reston connections.  Great to know there’s already a Reston connection, although I confess to fear and intimidation at the mention of those clubs.  I looked them up almost a year ago, and I still have the notes… “Team FEXY - A group of hardcore, really fast guys”… and girls.  I think I stopped at “Hardcore” and “Fast” J.  Aside from the fact that I’m severely out of shape (I got winded carrying the skis to and from the car yesterday), I should probably also mention that the swim group I worked out with in Canada always headed to the pub afterwards for a beer.  So, a little bit of anxiousness associated with groups that have their own team colors, and customized gear and apparel!  That said, I would LOVE to get involved with a group that can accommodate me, now or later when I can move a few feet without requiring a rest break!  Checked the Reston Runners, as per your note, and they seem a bit more tame… but will do a bit more due diligence.

With respect to which sprints… as I wrote my goals I felt I was being a bit non-specific.  That wasn’t out of avoidance, but rather complexity.  I have a 10 year old (today) son, that is about as active as they come.  He swims, does gymnastics, scouts, band, choir, the usual assortment of (very competitive) DC area stuff!  As a participative father, I have Hershey’s Park Choir Trips, Camp Outs, Swim Meets, and other assorted activities dotting my calendar from now well through the next century.  Did I mention I have no life?!  Actually I have a great life, it just involves lots of other children, crazy parents, and non-stop driving… ok, I have no life!

So with schedule constraints in mind, and the ability to opt out once I get back to Virginia and get the calendar updated…, what I would like to shoot for, is the Tri-Sport Huntsville Sprint on June 25th.  It’s a bit late in the season, but I think it’s realistic, since school ends a few days before that, and the likelihood of some last minute conflict goes down significantly.  It also gives me almost a full 6 months to go from sloth to athlete, which seems realistic and not as likely to put me in the hospital.

The balance of the races I had planned to schedule in around the summer vacation travel plans.  Again, a complexity issue, as we go back and forth between Canada, Reston, and Caribbean based on the camp opportunities.  I do sound pretty overextended as I write this, but it’s more like a well-choreographed show… so he says… and in the past I pretty much just looked at what was nearby and coming up, and then signed up for it.  Once I’m in the zone, I love training the different sports because it makes day to day life just so much more enjoyable (carrying the skis back and forth to the car is not such an endeavor) and the opportunity to do the races is just a really great opportunity to be with energetic people who like being outside and active.

So to summarize, I am a highly motivated individual terrified of committing to team FEXY who has no life and needs a training partner. J  I think I will now have to add depression to my list of things to overcome when I get back home from the holiday travel!

PS – Will set a goal to get the other sprints on the calendar by February.  I am also putting my training plan into place and will post the details, including nutrition goals, etc., etc.  I want to establish at least some credible commitment!

    ALEX-
My 2 cents... I've used and like the Garmin Forerunner.  Used it specifically for the multi-sport capabilities, and had it set up for the bike as well.  My version is the 305.  I wore it wrist mounted, and didn't have a holder for the bike.  That was a pain.  Consider for a moment trying to hold your left wrist up so you can see the dial, then press the buttons with your right hand... no problem at all if you can ride with no hands!

Wow, I need to do some catching up in a hurry!  Here is my bio:

    NAME: Lori

STORY: High level college and adult league tennis player for 25 years.  Took up running after graduating from college and completed several 10-Ks, a couple of half marathons, and a 20-miler.  Injured my hip training for my first marathon--never made it to the starting line.

Volunteered at the inaugural IM Wisconsin in 2002.  Continued to volunteer at IM WI and started to ponder the possibility of doing a triathlon.  Started swim lessons in Feb 05 with a local swim coach. Learning to swim was way out of my comfort zone--a major accomplishment. I went from not being able to do one length to completing an Ironman swim.  Swimming is still my major weakness.  Completed IM Wisconsin in 2008 with my hubby at age 50, albeit very slowly!

Completed sprint tris and one Ironman.

Currently retired and taking care of an elderly parent.

FAMILY STATUS: Married / Husband Eric (training partner for biking)/ Two terrier mutt dogs

CURRENT TRAINING: Doing the minimum--plan to kick it up a notch after the holidays. Currently doing a coached Performance Based Cycling class 2x/week.  Planning on an additional bike, 2 runs, 2 swims, and some strength and yoga each week.  Will start an open water swim class in mid-May.

LAST YEAR'S RACES: Two half marathons and one quarter marathon.  No tris due to health issues and some major life events.

2011 RACES: The plan includes the Lake Monona 20K run in May, Madison/Green Bay Half Marathon in May, sprint tri in June (Lake Mills or Verona), HIM in July (Door County), a sprint in Aug (Oshkosh or Silver Lake).  Fall half/full marathon in October(Haunted Hustle).  Perhaps another half marathon in August for training purposes (Madison Mini).  Would love to break 2 hours for a half marathon this year!

WEIGHTLOSS: Just right but need to regain some lost muscle.

I do come from mostly a running background and it is my strength.  Very new to both cycling and swimming.  Strong background in strength training.  Really looking forward to working with the group and getting some sage advice and a few kicks in the seat of the pants when needed!

Tomorrow, I'm looking forward to getting outside for a run in some chilly weather (I partake in the Crappy Winter Weather Challenge on the Challenge Forum)  Oddly, I actually enjoy running now that I've been doing it for a while. At first, it was painful on so many levels

Have fun! And looking forward to getting to know you all a little better over the next couple of months.

I SO admire all of you that have 'winter' weather and still get your outdoor workouts in. I have a 5 mile run tomorrow and it'll probably be raining but should only be about 50 degrees out. My non-active friends think I'm nuts for going out in the rain but we used to live in Kansas City and I really appreciate my California weather.

I'd much rather run in with zero wind chills and snow than pouring rain and 50 degrees. Now, if it were 80 and raining, then that would be sort of refreshing..but 50 and wet is bone chilling.  brrrrr!

Sarah, I'll let you know how that all went tomorrow We're supposed to have big winds too. I can run in the wet but about an hour after I get home is when the chill sets in. I so prefer cool weather to the heat for running though. One of my goals this year is to learn to like running in the heat since my first 1/2 IM is Vineman in July and it should be pretty toasty.
    Johanne

Well, I got my run in without rain but with crazy winds. I felt like every time I turned a corner the wind was in my face. Nice to be done though Now I'm off to check the horses to make sure they haven't blown away.

    Alex,
I currently use the Timex Global Trainer (new Christmas Present this year) but it doesn't keep HR in the water but allows me to track everything else between SBR (cadence, pace, etc). I know Swimsense makes a watch, but it is strictly for swimming. If you are interested in reading a blog, there is a guy who is a triathlete and he does great reviews on all GPS/HR devices that are currently on the market. Depending on your needs, this may be a great spot to check out and narrow down your choices. Be patient as he gives very indepth reviews, but it is my "Go-To" site when I am looking for anything techy! He is at www.dcrainmaker.com
    Good Luck,

    Roger,
Last year, I started with a basic Run/Walk program for about 8 weeks to get back into "shape" and then I jumped into the Couch to Sprint program here on BT (which was just right for me). Right now I am doing the "Learning to Swim" program from Sara McClarty (also on BT) and I just subsitute the program (3x a week) for any swim I have. You may want to check that out as it is a very good beginning swim program that you can integrate into any other plan. She gives very good details on all the drills etc.

Regarding racing...in looks like you are in NC too? If so...check out www.setupevents.com this is the best site for races all over NC/SC/VA and you can easily narrow everything down by distance, location, etc. I am doing several sprints this year close to Charlotte, so if you see one that you want to try...come on and we can help each other ease the nerves and cheer each other on as well!

    STEVE -

Yes swimming is very important for me right now i have been putting it off all year long so i want to stay in it as much as posible this coming year. I do have a set training that i do in the pool with drills and alll that good stuff. I use the Part One of a Five-Month Beginner Swimmer Series
By Sara McLarty. You can find it on the home page of BT i am on the 4th week of the first month. It is very good training in the pool and i recomend it to everyone for sure.

The Rollers are fun i just got them this month and i was without riding my bike for over 2 months you know since this cold weather started here in utah.. Since you will start on the rollers in this new year hopefully you might be able to give me some training tips that you use on the rollers.
Right now i just get on and ride for about 10 or 20 min ( still trying to get my balance on them ) I still cant watch tv while riding that is my goal for january..

I will for sure also stay off the trying to fly thing, wouldnt want to miss my first tri..

Today 20 min on the Rollers followed by a 3 mile run on the treadmil in my boring basement

    Manfred

PS. I try to log most of my workouts on here so if you want to check them out and give some feedback that would be great.

Thanks for the work you put in too this forum Steve.

    Steve,

I did Eagleman last year. Is was hot and I had some trouble swimming straight.  I hope to be a lot lighter this year also.  I just turned 59 so I am in the 60 -64 gorup. YIKES!.

I am planning to do the Columbia Tri and the Nations Tri, all fairly local for me. I live in Frederick.  I did the same 3 last year and started with the Nations Tri the previous year. I figure if I keep showing up, I'll improve.  Actually, I don't think I can go any slower.

I am just now getting back to training. I teach math at the community college and I picked up a new course last semester.  It took a lot of time to prepare.  That's my excuse and I 'm sticking with it.  Anyway I am newly motivated and looking forward to making progress.

I've decided to start swimming 1x/week now and pick up the lessons when offered through our township at the end of March.

I agree that it will be good to get in the water, and since this is the area where I need the most work, better to start sooner -- Adam.

Hi all, realised that my bio didn't look quite like everyone else's, so going to just add some more info bits:

Family Status: Single.   But I don't have to upset anyone by training, so have to see that as a positive.

Goals: Aiming for an eventual IM, because I was thwarted in my attempt to do that in 2007/8, again in 2008/9 and then realised it wasn't going to happen on this round. So, doing little events for this year, building up to some sprints in April-ish, which is really the end of our season in NZ. Then, hopefully next summer will be competing some Olys and possibly a HIM depending on where I'm at. After that, I'll start thinking Iron-thoughts again and see where I end up. I turn 40 in 2012, so that might be a good goal to have; do my IM just after my 41st birthday. Will see!

I'm just so inspired by the stories of everyone in this group. I can't wait. I think it's going to be great. And, given that you guys are in your off season, please feel free to get excited for li'l me down here in NZ doing my wee tris! I'll be living vicariously through y'all during your summer when I'm freezing my cleats off down here!

Yeah....it sure doesn't pay to disappear from here for a while! Sixteen posts have sprouted in my absence, and by my wild reckoning I am still behind by three First Response posts, plus about 47 general, all-purpose posts. Yikes!

    Well then --- Onwards!

Steve, going by the friendliness and supportiveness of this group, I reckon we've all got your back. Don't wear your fingers out! Everyone seems awesome, so we'll take care of each other if you need a coffee break or have to do something as radical as have a life of your own!

Thanks for putting in so much effort.

    Jac

Wow, I need to do some catching up in a hurry!  Here is my bio:

    NAME: Lori

STORY: High level college and adult league tennis player for 25 years.  Took up running after graduating from college and completed several 10-Ks, a couple of half marathons, and a 20-miler.  Injured my hip training for my first marathon--never made it to the starting line.

    <snipped for space>

Lori, I feel like I know you! Well, I can't say that I can call myself a high level anything athlete, but I used to play adult league tennis, loved it but it got a bit catty (not sure if you experienced that) and ultra competitive, so I backed off. I also suffered an injury while training for my first marathon, only had about 6 more weeks to go, but I could barely walk...it was a mix of sciatica and IT band issues I think, never quite figured it out, but I never ran a marathon after that. AND you mentioned that you had some personal life issues (ME TOO!) and have a strong background in strength training.....I'm that way as well - feel like I don't do enough endurance stuff, hate to run, but I could lift weights all day.

One thing that you've done that I would love to cross off my bucket list is to complete an IM. I think it's awesome that you went from a virtual non-swimmer to being able to do an iron distance swim!! Yay you!! Swimming is my strongest point, I don't have to train much at all to swim, but everything else needs work. Cycling is okay, just need time in the saddle for my butt and not die from boredom. Running is my ultimate nemesis....I hate running, never liked it and never found that runner's high (okay, maybe for like a brief second or something).

Oh another thing I would love to have in common with you....being retired!! LOL!!!

Looking forward to learning lots of good things from you and everyone else on the mentor team!

    ALEX -

Couch to Sprint is a very approapriate palce to start, even for folks who aren't entering it all completely cold. At the very least it will encourage moderation, which for many of us is a double-edged sword -- it serves to keep us safe(r) from injury, but does so at the expense of forging ahead. Play with it for a while and see how it suits you. If it seems too pokey, then look into a more aggressive plan. Remember, too, that these plans are "cookie-cutter", and that for all of our faults as humanoids, we aren't exactly identical cookies. So, it's even all fair to mix 'n' match plans, crafting one that suits you the best.

"Biggest Loser" surely is inspirational and amazing, but I end up missing more of them than I see. I missed whatever episode had the triathlon, and I would've loved to have seen that one. My daughter tells me that the next seaon is beginning in just a couple of weeks, so I don't expect that the tri one will be rolling around on re-runs. Oh, well.

Your plan of three sprints, each a month apart, is a good one. That'll give you ample time to process what has happened in each one, and then move on to the next. And you'll find that recovery time for sprints is usually minimal, so that means you'll have close to a full four weeks of further training between races. Perfect!

Where are you from, and have you picked out three sprints that look tempting to you?

And huge congrats on the weight loss - Wow! Yup, if you can get consistent with the training, that sure ought to help you drop a good part of the remaining 30-40 lbs you are looking to lose. Have you done this mostly so far through more conscientious eating patterns, or has a lot of non-tri-specific training and working out been part of it? However it's happened -- great resolve!

    Steve,

I second what Jac's said...no worries about responding to EVERYONE! You've done an amazing job keeping up with everybody in the group and on top of that, driving to get your daughter (Super Dad!)....and all that done with finger pecking? That's something else! As you've said in your earlier welcome posts, we all have our personal lives and time we need for jobs, training and family....so we appreciate all that you do, but we are also patient!!

    Hey Jac!

I think we're close in ages and I have always wanted to visit NZ. I turn 40 in 2013 and am planning a trip back to Singapore then and also a trip to Australia and possibly NZ. Guess if we're still friends then, we could get some coffee together! LOL!!! And being single is okay! Like you said, the perks of not having to annoy anyone with training. But I am fortunate in that I have a very supportive partner who is also a triathlete (not doing tris right now) and understands what training is all about, but I am mindful of not neglecting family time too because without family and their support, there will be no success in our endeavors.
