I need more OWS practice, though. Over the next few weekends I'll be going to the lake and practicing my swim to get more comfortable with the water. I'm having such terrible panic attacks out there that I'm exhausted after only a few strokes.

Do you start swimming right away when you get in the water?  At least for now, it might be helpful to get into the water and hang out for a few minutes before you start swimming.  Get used to the temperature (cold water always seems to cause more panic attacks) and float around before you start your workout.  And don't be afraid to pop up, take a few deep breaths, and then go back to swimming!  I still do that in races sometimes!!

Yeah, actually my coaches encourage us to dive right in and start swimming. I'll try the slow approach you suggest first. The water is definitely cold and I really begin to panic immediately. Thanks for the new direction I'm going to take!

I can see their point about diving in so that you start to get used to the water, but the shock of the cold water and the adrenaline from the starting to swim can be a lot if you're not really comfortable with swimming.

Sure doesn't make it easier to go running in the morning when it's below freezing. I thought it was spring. lol  It's supposed to snow some more tomorrow. Getting real tired of it.

I don't even know when I'll be able to get an outside swim. Water is waaaay to cold. Guess I shouldn't have sold my 9mm wetsuit when I quit diving. lol

My two cents with OWS...
- don't be afraid to do a little breaststroke, backstroke, sidestroke, doggy paddle, etc until you're ok with the water temp and ready to get 'going'.  No one is watching your form, or going to take time off because you didn't dive in and start doing freestyle right away.
- Or, try taking a kickboard, noodle, etc in the water at first to hold onto until you're warmed up and ready to go.  This way you could adjust to the temp, get your face in, kick a bit and then be on your way.  After a swim or two and the weather warms, try it without.

I was excited to bike outside tomorrow, but the forecast is calling for rain

What are your plans this weekend?!

I was hoping to bike outside, but it also looks like it is supposed to rain here all weekend.  I will try to run although it might be on the treadmill.

Well, if the rain and/or snow stays away, I'm running tomorrow morning. 2 mile run tomorrow. Of course I have to work. Then I get two days off from work. woohoo!

Sunday I will do some core training and depending on weather and how energetic I am going for another run in the afternoon.

Of course I'll spend some time with my beautiful wife.

What are my plans for the weekend?

On Saturday morning I plan to do 35 minutes on the spin bike, a two mile run at the gym, and then a 27 minute strength training circuit.  After this, there is a pool party.

On Sunday I am leaving for a two week vacation in Cancun.  The second week I'll have access to a gym, but the first week I am hoping to do push ups, crunches, etc. on my own.  I also hope to run on the beach and swim in the ocean.  I'm a little nervous about trying to get my needed workouts in and also eating healthy while on vacation, but I know it's possible.

Unfortunately the snow can come all the way through June.

This week i have to time my workouts to the weather. Looks like it's going to rain/snow every other day this next week. Mother nature doesn't make it easy.

The 2nd week of May, the AMGEN starts its race up here in Tahoe. Should be fun to watch.

I have some really exciting news that I'd like to share with the group.  First, this morning I ran the farthest I've ever run before.  I ran 2 miles in 21 minutes.  Impressive?  No.  But, nonetheless a HUGE accomplishment for me.  (Also mind you this was after doing 32 minutes on the spin bike.)  Second, Saturdays are my day to weigh myself.  This morning I weighed 172.8!  This is the slimmest I have been in 10 years!  Since December 2009 I have lost 41 pounds and now I'm only 12.8 pounds away from my goal weight!  I've completed 3 weeks of my tri training and know that this has a lot to do with my recent weight loss success.  I look forward to what the future has to offer!  Thanks for all of your support!  WE can do it!!!

Hello All,

Did my first "brick" workout: 45 minutes of bike on the road, super fun, followed by a dash into the house to change shoes and grab dog, then 2.7 miles in 27 minutes.  I felt great, could have run more, but I'm going to keep up with the plan.

I'm going to try to swim tomorrow.

On a less pleasant note, my ankle has been aching extra.  I have 3 plates and about 8 screws in it, so it likes to give me a little grief.  I'm hoping I can get through this running and then reevaluate.

Way to GO!!!!!!! I'm so happy for your accomplishments and you are super inspiring to me! Hearing everyone's success stories are so great and a great motivation.

I've been feeling sickly the past few days so I haven't been able to run I believe it's a sinus infection, and I feel like running outside will make it worse. I'm going to try running inside tomorrow though and see how that goes.

I have a Tri clinic coming up a week from today where we will be doing the open water swim, and learning about strategy, transitions, and other general beginner Tri information. I'm actually pretty nervous for this. This will be my first time practicing swimming.... I'm not a member of a gym or any pool so I haven't had the opportunity. I don't own a wet suit (which I would totally need in this chilly SF Bay!) so I don't get out in open water either... they are renting wetsuits at the clinic, so we'll see how it all goes. I went and got a swim cap, goggles, and some super on sale Tri shorts and Top at the store this evening. Having some of the gear makes me feel more ready and excited!

Yesterday I did an easy 15 mile bike ride followed by a 30 minute walk... I'm still not a good runner and my Timex Ironman drowned last week so I can't interval run without it. I'm used to the beeps to tell me when to start and stop. That was followed by a 1000 meter OWS. My psychiatrist prescribed some medication to help me with the panic attacks and it worked! I had no problem keeping up my usual pace in the water and made it through. I'm still finishing last, but I did it!

Today is my Duathlon. I'm leaving in a few minutes. It's going to be a 5k run/19 mile bike/5k run. I'll probably be last because of my lack of running skills and weight, but I just want to finish. That's my goal.

Tonight we have a super fun Benefit, Silent Auction, and Raffle to raise money for TNT. I'm excited about it and can't wait to see all my friends tonight.

Heading out now. Wish me luck!

Way to go!  That is a really big accomplishment.  I know the feeling too well, having "won" a weight battle last year through (who'da thunk it?) diet and exercise.

That's awesome!

Had your ankle been causing any problems before?  I know my brother (who has a plate and 6? screws in his ankle) also had a similar problem when he started running, but it's gotten better over time.  His bones and joints just weren't used to it at first, so he had to start off a little slower than he would have liked.

Well done on the brick!!  How did your legs feel when you first started?

My legs were fine, really, I have slowed my running pace WAY down, since at first I wasn't able to go more than a few blocks without walking.  A runner friend asked if I was going too fast.  The next day I ran 1.5 miles without stopping.  Silly me at sprinting...

So I think my bike is going to need to get longer to kill my legs, you know?  Again, I'm mostly worried about the swim.  I'm going to look up some exercises to do at home that will help with my swimming... Any suggestions?

Katie

Not being able to run a few blocks without walking is perfectly normal for the first few times you do a brick.  You do have to slow way down.  It can also help to bike in an easier gear - so that you have a higher number of pedal strokes per minute - to get more blood into your legs for a few minutes toward the end of your ride.

For swimming, are you looking for strength exercises or swim workout sets?

I'm back! I finished my first ever Duathlon yesterday and I wasn't last!!! I was next to last. Heh. Surprisingly enough, I ran most of the first 5K, was only a little tired on the bike ride... there were some long uphills, but nothing I couldn't accomplish, and tried to run the second 5K, but my legs weren't having it so I walked it. The best part was being joined by two of my former coaches/mentors from last season's TNT group on the last leg. They kept me going through the walk and at the end told me to sprint and enjoy the moment through the finish line. I tried sprinting, but I'm sure it looked more like a jog, my legs were so tired. Tongue out I FINISHED!!! Now I feel more confident about the upcoming Triathlon in May. I know I can do this! It took over 3 hours, but I made it. Although I showered after the race, the number markings didn't come off, so I proudly wore my badge of honor to the fundraising event last night and had a lot of people come up and congratulate me on finishing my first Duathlon. I'm so happy right now.

Swimming tonight!!!

Thanks! Yes, I think attending swim practice will help my legs recover better than just taking the day off like my husband wants me to. After training on Saturday I felt a little sore, but I need to get used to training daily because I'll be doing that in a couple of weeks when my schedule changes.

Anyway, I had to take some Aleve this morning for my legs. Heh. They're a little sore.
