Okay, all done! I put most of my commentary in my logs, so feel free to go peek and offer constructive criticism. I need all the hints I can get! Laughing

Upshot: It was better than I expected in less than ideal (39F and light rain) conditions. I didn't feel physically stressed at all and certainly learned a lot, and think I'll be ready for next weekend's "real" tri. There were more people than I expected there today, too, at all skill levels. Everyone was cheerful and encouraging - every time you passed someone, they'd yell something positive at you.

The only difference I can see between the "real" tri and the "practice" tri is medals, though, as the miles still seem to be the same!

Well done
You will do awesome next weekend

I did get my long bike in yesterday, 100.2km First century of the year, not in the best conditions but since it was suppose to rain today I switched a bike/run workout.
So todays run was suppose to be in the rain, but that did not happen !! Why not you may ask !!!
Because it has been snowing ALL DAY In the beginning I thought  it would stop but it just keeps coming....For the first "hours" the roads where warm enough so it all melt....but not any more. I can not believe we will start May with snow. It looks like Christmas outside.
I guess the planned bike ride after tomorrows 5k run will have to be cancelled

Why do I live here  ????

Hi, would like to join the mentoring program, I'm 37 and in the UK, at the moment I want to stick to sprint triathlon as I would like to hold on to as much muscle mass as possible. I currently lift weights 4-5 times per week with 3-4 days of cardio, sometimes I cycle to the gym (5 miles each way) sometimes to work (15 miles each way). I enjoy running and do 7-10 miles at an easy pace on a weekend. At the moment I only swim once a week after leg day in the gym. I completed half marathon last year in 2hrs but got a pretty bad chest infection a couple of days before, think I could've done it a fair bit quicker. I am going down to the swim session at the local tri club next week which I hope helps. A few quick questionsWould I be better switching to 3 days per week in the gym? This seemed to work well with the half marathon last year. Is a leg day required with all the cycling and running? Is it really possible to not lose too much weight if I stick to sprint and keep my calories high?

@ Duncan: That is how running is supposed to be or training in general. The great journey in it self with sweet highlights like these. You make me jealous ;o)

Haha... no worries... keep it up and you'll feel this way soon too!  If only every workout was so sweet!

monicasanchez0910 - 2011-05-01 12:32 AM Hi! I'd like to join your mentoring program. I am a 31 year old female. I live in an island on the Caribbean Sea called Puerto Rico so no cold training weather for me! Our average temperature during the day right now would be in the mid 80 degrees Farenheit but it will continue to go up throughout the summer reaching 100-103 degrees at noon. I am doing my first SPRINT triathlon tomorrow which I have been training for a couple of months, although I have always been active in terms of exercise. My routine consists of spinning classes 1-2 times a week plus one cycling training of approx 12 miles out on the road, running 5k twice a week, one strength training a week and swimming 800m twice a week in our local olympic swimming pool. So far, I am averaging 19-20 mins on 750m swim, 45mins for a 12 mile cycling trek, and 9-10 minutes per mile running. I do not like to run, so it has been the most challenging part of my training and have only been doing cycling and swim training for a very short while. Will let you know how I did tomorrow!

Welcome Monica.  I look forward to hearing more from you.  Sounds like you are well on your way!

Hey Chris... Welcome.

If you are biking and running like you said, I think a sprint should be pretty easy to complete for you.  Assuming the swim isn't a problem.

You said you run 7 ~ 10 miles on the weekend.  Is this your only running?  Or do you do other runs durning the week? (Cardio???)  I would assume that if you wanted to maintain weight, that sprint training shouldn't affect that too much, but I'm no expert.

Double post... so I guess, since I'm done responding to people, I'll add my own morning workout.

I managed to get our for a good ride today.  I went to a designated bike path (which I dissapointingly found out is only 14.5km long in the first direction) with almost no need to ever stop... Yeah!!! no traffic lights, speeding scooters and other fun things that come with road riding in Taiwan.

I decided I would try doing 40km on the bike at a good pace.  I started out feeling GREAT.  Was maintaining 33km/h for pretty much the entire 14km out, but when I turned around I realized I had a tail wind... which ment I now had a head wind.  Coming back was pretty brutal.  When I finished (got in 38.3km) my pace was 26km/h which I guess ain't bad, but was hoping for more.  I then threw my bike in the car, put on sneakers and tried to run... OUCH!  I managed about 2.25kms, which is all I was really aiming for, but boy oh boy did it hurt.

Anyway, not a bad sunday morning workout.  So nice to have Sunday off... I've been working for the last 27 days straight so its really nice not to see my school today!!!

Hi Chris

Welcome to the group
You seem to workout a lot So your basic fitness is probably pretty good.
Now you can continue to lift 4-5 times a week, there is nothing wrong in that but the more time you spend on swim/bike/run the faster you will be, and you feel better when you finish.
I would change to 3 lifting sessions a week, you could maybe just add a couple extra exercise each time to compensate for the missing day(s).
Do you only run once a week ?
Try to run for 10 min before lifting it is a good way to get warmed up, and finish up doing another 5-10 minutes, this can be really hard after a hard lifting session, but you will learn to start running on tired legs, like in a Tri
So you dont wont to lose weight, or you dont want to lose muscles ?
If you keep lifting you will not lose muscles, if you already have a low fat% and you stick to short races you should be fine

Please blog your workouts, it will maybe it easier to give suggestions, and it is also good to be able to check what you have done earlier.

Mesteren lol did you notice that underneath that picture it says something about mental toughness.I think mental toughness may have a little to do with a willingness to wear 3 layers of clothes while running.not that I can say anything missed a couple days opf training due to the flu but it is kinda funny.

LOL, yes I know.

I was mentally tough today as I did run a 5k, they had cleared most of the snow but there was still so much water on the streets so my feet where very cold and wet at the end.
All the good runners did not have my mental toughness so they stayed home, and I could win it pretty easily I was about 1 min slower then I wanted to go but you can not change the weather conditions

I hope you will get over the flu soon

Looks like home, Mesteren. Today at least we did not wake up to snow, but to sunshine and it is warming up nicely now.

I did a short/easy ride with someone else - it is the first time I've ridden with someone who isn't one of the children. It's interesting how different things are than they were for me a year and a half ago. That six miles was a training ride for her, and she was sweaty/tired at the end. It was a recovery/pleasure cruise for me; my heart rate *average* was 103 for the ride and max was 126. If nothing else can convince me of how far I've come already, it's that. And if I need to know how far I have to go, all I have to do is look at other BTers' logs!

Hi, went to watch my first tri today looked good, did 16k cycle when I got back and 5k run later on,Could've done more but wanted to watch the football, another prob I could do with some help on is breathing, I thought it was a chest infection as a few family and friends have had the same symptoms, there seems to be a bug going round here ive been the doctors 3 times and he's gave me antibiotics but didn't really help, now he seems to think it could be asthma he gave me something called predisolone which helped straight away, any insight into this? Can we put up what we've done on runkeeper, micoach etc?

Belated hello and welcome to Christi, Chris, and Monica! Let us know about your upcoming races so we can send inspirations and smiley faces

@Mesteren, wow snow in May! Its supposed to be Spring! In Austin, its the opposite. Its like we bypassed Spring and went straight into Summer. Its been really humid lately... until a few hours ago. A much needed cold front is blowing through, and the temp dropped close to 20 degrees F. Only in Austin where the weather likes to change its mind.

Even though a few of you are snow/cold-bound, its really awesome that you still get in miles on the bike on the trainer and go out to run. I don't know if I could do it. So when its warm again in your respective locales, you will be so excited you will set PBs!

I will be in a wedding as a bridesmaid this weekend in California. Hope I'll still be able to get some runs and maybe a swim in between. But if I don't that is why! Not trying to slack, and will likely get grumpy because I can't swim/bike/run. Have a good week everyone!

Hey everyone! Welcome to the group. It sure filled up fast.

That snow looks rough. Especially this late. I thought I was gonna die here in Ohio. I couldn't wait. Now it just seems to rain every second.

Although, it wasn't raining during Saturday's RACE! I ran my first 10k on saturday. I missed my goal time of sub 60min probably because at mile 3 I HAD to stop and pee. Drove me crazy. Couldn't have finished another 30min of running without stopping. I still feel like I did well though. My final time was 62:20 and it was the most hilly course I have ever run. I have been sore all day today because of it. I didn't realize.

I was there early but probably wasn't careful enough with my fluids and the lines at the port-a-johns were so long that I gave up.

So, after a little recovery I am on to the next race.

I was so proud of finishing well though. I wore my finishers metal all day today. To Church and everything. Cool little "flying pig" metal

Thanks everyone for all the help and support. I may not have been able to finish without the help of this group.Laughing

Duncan, I had a similar ride earlier this spring.  I even thought about wind direction when I started. But I considered summer wind direction, not winter/spring air flow.  I couldn't believe how fast I was flying, until I turned around.  Just brutal.  Next time I'm riding the route in the opposite direction.  Thanks for the chuckle and the flashback!

To all the final entrants to this group: Welcome!

Mesteren: Snow in May is brutal and unexpected. At most I could expect some Ice over there. But that's it. Maybe next time miss the plain back from Germany. Speaking of Germany: How did it go?

Rebecca: I big woop woop on a huge PB.

Christi: Don't worry on the distances. The fun of tri in my opinion that everyone has his own goals. Wether you Chrissie Wellington of a fortunate member of Mesterens group. And don't look at my bike rides. Cause in my defense it is not a fair comparison. Over here we have way more bikes than citizins. It's like second nature to us to bike.

Joel: Woop woop on you PB. 62:20 sounds like a great time on a first tri. especially with some peeing in the mix. BTw I want to join that race next year: Flying pig medals rock.

In regard to my weekend: with some extra delay I actually swam again yesterday. Right before I went down to imitate a Zebra (we have American Football season over here at the moment) I did a 3 * 500m with 1 minute rest workout. Special focus on pacing and relaxing. It felt great.

On saturday I did a 100K bike ride with all head wind. Respect for the girlfriend who I joined on that ride. She is a powerhouse and did the most work by leading. To bad she is really small so I still had not much to shelter in. In total I did 100K sub 4 hours. Though with 2 main breaks. One to get coffee with apple pie. And one because I had 2 flat tires after hitting a small rock on the road.

On the flat tires I have a big woop woop for my new hero Lubo. First I quickly noticed I brought a wrong inner tire with me so I wasn't able to fix my bike. As the friend had a total of 120K left to go we decided it was better if I just figured out myself on how to get home.

While doing a relaxing walk towards the main road an unknown biker passed and noticed my flat tire. He immediately stopped insisting I would except a spare tire of him. And I wasn't allowed to pay him for it. At that moment I was only aware of my front tire being flat.

As he continued his route I fixed the tire to figure out my other one was flat as well. (gotta love the stiff continental tires). And as this couldn't be fixed with a patch either I was in need of another tire. And my luck: Lubo was on an out and back route. So he even gave up his second spare to me.

And as he still didn't want anything in return. We agreed on exchanging numbers. I will probably invite him on a race in my home town and make sure I repay him.

Lubo: THANKS!!

Today is a gorgeous day and I will do long slow run after work.

Niezels I know I grew up there and still have my old batavus bike in my parents basement. We rode our bikes everywhere school which was 10 k away, swimming lessons everything including grammas house it think that was 40 k. Move here and i got told within a week on our way home on a bike got pulled over by a cop on the way home asking me what the bleep I was doing. My answer going home what else. Biking slowed down lots with the big yellow school bus coming to pick us up.

Mesteren did the snow melt yet?? And how did thing in Germany go??

Hey Everyone and welcome to our new group members!!  I didn't get to check in much at all last week so I had a few pages to go through.  Looks like everyone is getting in some good workouts and I saw a few PB's in there.  Great job!!  Work has been super crazy so I didn't get much S/B/R done last week.   I managed a couple of decent swims last week, but that was about it (and I got to go to my first NBA playoffs game....GO THUNDER!!)  I'll get a bike ride in this evening, hopefully outside, depending on the weather.  If not, I've got Shameless episodes to catch up on while on the trainer.  One way or another there will be lots of time in the saddle for me this week!
