Suzie - Settings, training blog customization, friends

Welcome Mike! Glad you are with us.  Take care of that foot.

Good job Curt!  Constantly improving... congrats.

And that is what you call resting Johanne?!  Would love to go horse back riding and hiking.

Yesterday I did my longest bike ride ever, only26 Km.  Today it’s rest day for me too.  I’ll take work home and do house chores.  BTW The distances I’ve done swimming lately are taking breathers… not like in the old days when I swam nonstop!!  I wish…

Good day to you all!

Funny Dave! I was debating between the Tempe tri's on those back to back weekends in May. My daughter is graduating from ASU so I decided to sign up for the Oly on May 7 so I can enjoy myself for the graduation festivities without thinking about upcoming race nutrition

Itzia,

Riding is work but relaxing too. I ride almost everyday so I can't count it as exercise even though my core and legs are working. Since I always have a plan, my hike is to scout out some trails that have been closed to horses because of some heavy rains we had. My friend and I want to take our younger horses there Thursday and we don't want to get into a wreck if the trails are still muddy. I'm always thinking!!! The rest part will come with all the laundry I should be doing today.

Just so I don't have to google it, what is Cuernavaca close to? It's fun getting a sense of where people live. Great job on the bike.

Johanne,

Cuernavaca, known as the city of eternal spring, it's a 45 min drive South of Mexico City.  Here’s some info for you, it looks accurate:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuernavaca

And some images too:

I gather you live in the countryside… I’ve always been a city girl, but I took riding lessons and would love to live in touch with nature.  Enjoy!

Johanne- I volunteered at Ironman Arizona in November and had a great time down there.  There is a great Brew Pub right in the shadow of the stadium.  I "tri" for beer.

Easy pace six today, nice weather, and feeling loose.

  • When is your first race this year? Where is it and what distance?  First race was April 2, 5k, next race is May 1st, 10k and a try a tri August 7, 375 swim, 10k bike and 2.5 run.
  • What is the farthest you have swam? Don't know, never measured.
  • What is your time for a 100yd/100m swim? Probably pretty slow.
  • Can you swim front crawl, backstroke, and breast stroke? All but expert at none!.
  • How many times each week can you realistically commit to swimming? For how long? 2 x/week, approx. 2 hours/week
  • Have you ever used a pull buoy or kickboard?  long, long time ago
  • Do you know any swim drills? I am/will be following the drills in the book Your First Triathlon or any shared here .
  • Do you have a wetsuit?  Not yet but will definitely be getting one.  Lake Ontairo water leaves little to be desired.

Sounds like everyone is off to great start this week!

Sara, thanks for the tip about starting running conservatively.  I always listen to my body and when I run, I take walk breaks if I need to.  I will try to fit in aquajogging to help with the joints.  I actually checked out a pool this morning.

Itzia, sounds like you had a nice ride.  That's probably further than I've gone so far as I've been using my bike on a trainer due to our lovely Canadian weather and have no way to judge my distance.

Johanne, the hike and horse ride sounds lovely!

Curt, nice job!

Today I did an easy run in a trail near my house.  I actually did my longest run ever, 8k.  I walked when I needed to and listened to my body when something didn't feel right.  My hubby joined me.  It was a lovely day, not much sun but the weather is warming up and there was actually a nice breeze.  Felt really strong at the end and did a little sprint at the end.  I said to hubby, "Who would have ever thought I would be saying I felt good after an endurance run!"

I went by my local pool to check it out.  I must say I felt a little intimidated.  I know I can swim, my hubby says I swim well but I never have taken it seriously and seeing all the people doing their laps was new to me.  Hum, where do I fit in to all this?

I am on 12 nights tonight and tomorrow so will check in when I can.  I plan on a 30 min bike ride tomorrow when I wake up.  Good news, I will be buying my new bike Wednesday.  I will be getting a hybrid as I want something that I can also ride recreationally with the kids. Is this a good idea?

Hope everyone has a great day!

Lori

Looks like most of you have gotten your workouts in already. I won't be doing mine until after work.

Plan calls for a 23 minute ride.  Should be around a 7 mile ride.  I love riding my bike.

I'm volunteering this year and cheering my niece for her second IMAZ. If my body is still holding up by then I 'might' sign up for 2012. We'll see..... I think I might of visited that Brew Pub

Cuernavaca looks beautiful! I love all the old buildings.

I actually live in the suburbs of San Jose but I board my horses 1 1/2 miles away so it's nice and close. We have a lot of protected open space nearby so there are lots of places to ride and hike. The best of both worlds.

Johanne

Suzi, Dave and I just got back from 2 weeks in Australia. We had a great, great time! What a beautiful country. We spent time in Cairns, Ayers Rock and Sydney. Next time I'd love to visit the western part of the country but who know when that'll be!

Curt-great job getting your time down to 2:40!  That's great!  Here's a "game" to play when you don't have a coach on deck and you are doing repeats of 50s or 100s:

GOLF RULES

Time yourself for 50yds/meters and count each stroke you take.  This is your score.

Example:

Swam 50 yards in 45 seconds.  Took 20 pulls down and 21 pulls back for a total of 41 pulls (or strokes, same thing).

45 seconds plus 41 strokes equals a score of 86.

GOLF GOAL

Get your score as low as you can by either a) swimming faster and/or b) taking fewer strokes.

Enjoy!

Hey Johanne, in my experience it has taken lots of hills to get used to going faster down then, especially once the aerobars go on!  It's good that you're cautious because you don't want to end up with some really painful road rash.

I would say challenging your balance skills will also help you build confidence so that your body can compensate if you go slightly off balance.  Having good sunglasses to keep your eyes from getting tired is helpful and so is taking it easy when the roads are wet.

Dave-24 is a good number!  Keep working on getting under 20 per length (if you're in a 25 yd/m pool).  This saves energy AND fewer strokes decreases your risk of overuse injury.

Itzia-thanks for posting the pictures of your city. It's beautiful.  The city I live is pretty economically depressed, so I don't dare share pictures of it unless we've had some nice snow fall.  This town needs a serious makeover! =)

Lori- a hybrid is perfectly fine.  If you want to be more competitive then a road bike or tri bike may need to go on your wish list.

As for joining a new pool it CAN be intimidating!  If there is a lifeguard on deck, ask about any unspoken "rules" or anything to be aware of when you swim there.  Some places like to have swimmers swim in a lane specific to their speed.  Also, ask how many people can fit to a lane or any other "pool etiquette" you should know of.  The people that already swim there will appreciate you for being curteous!

Tim- if I had it my way I'd do ALL of my workouts after work!  OR, before work if I still working evening shifts.  I am not a fan of swimming in the a.m. but I will grin and bare it through a morning run/ride.  Enjoy the saddle time tonight!
