Good afternoon Team.

I think I have caught up on most posts so here I go - sorry if I miss anyone.

Charlie - I hate bad lane manners - run him over next time - it will be good prep for an open water swim (or so I hear from Coach) LOL.

Jen - check this link out for a good sighting stroke http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRZDS8xjyHE&feature=related

I knew Coach would chime in on my insistence on doing bilateral breathing Smile but listen to him - what the hell do I know? seriously.

Hi Scott - nice to meet you.

Hi George - nice to meet you. I also love the hot weather and I see you have a race on May 15th - good luck but don't kill yourself starting out - and be kind to your body when it talks to you. As far as gear goes - clipless pedals for sure and Iceman is right - most people I meet in this sport are very encouraging and the ones that are not are just equipment snobs and you should ignore them. Listen to Coach on the gear suggestions.

Deb - nice to see you with us - we have more girls this time, which is great.

Peter - don't worry about not having a pet, I don't have one right now unless you count my golf clubs and of course and my bike Smile

Court - thanks for the encouragement!

One more comment, we have a lively group and I love it. I am off for a run now and back in the pool later tonight.

KC

Good Evening Team.

Coach - hope you don't mind, I took the liberty of compiling all the team names and put them together in this group.

Just an FYI for the group - all you have to do is copy and paste the information below into your trianing log. This will allow you to click on each member and check in with them, PM them, look at their training logs, offer inspiration etc. Let me know if you have any problems. All you have to do is highlight the group, right click, copy, go to your training log, left clici on edit in your current plan information on the top, right click and paste, then click on ok and you are all set to stay in touch.

Hope everyone is having a great night. Off to the pool in about 45 minutes for me.

KC

EDIT - I made a mistake - going to do it over - stay tuned.

2nd EDIT - ok lets try again.

3rd Edit - doing something wrong - I am leaving for the pool - check back later tonight or in the morning and I will get it right - I promise Smile

OK - 4th time is the charm ( I hope) here is the list, it should work.

hello everyone.  my name is jason.  i was in the last mentor group with dave and the others.  it was a  great group so i am glad to be back in this one.

i live in atlanta and started training for tris last fall.  i am hooked.  i never thought i would like endurance sports but i do.  my days fly by as i work, train and have two small kids and a wonderful wife (that lets me train for all this stuff).

i look forward to talking and learning from all you.

Kc you joke but if you are anywhere near the front of a swim start it is full contact!  Being from Canada you should love that, its just like hockey.

Thanks for the quick link, makes it so much easier to find everyone. (once you get if figured out, where is Tim hes our resident IT guy LOL)

That sighting video is perfect! I love how easy he makes it look.

Hi Jason glad to have you back!!

As for me I did a nice run yesterday with almost no pain and today I wish I could say the same but while biking it was hurting pretty good.  We shall see what the doc says tomorrow.

I've got a question for everyone.  Being new to this sport, I don't have all the "right" equipment.  At the same time, however, I don't want to be sinking thousands into this on my first time.  Thus, remember your first time, what would you recommend as must have's regarding equipment for a first tri, either for the race or for training?

Here are some things I've gathered during my research and trial:

  • Swim goggles - MUST - I got the Aqua Sphere Kayenne (awesome, BTW)
  • Running shoes - MUST - Your joints will thank you
  • Wet suit - MUST (at least for open water in May) - Rent at wetsuitrental.com
  • Bike - Use own bike or rent a bike.  I have a Specialize MTB, I'll be getting new tires so there's less resistance.  Should I get any shoe clips or grips to ensure more power?
  • Helmet - MUST - Standard ones should do
  • Tri Shorts - MUST - Reduces chaffing and perfect for all three sports
  • Sunscreen - MUST - Any recommendations?
  • Sunglasses - depending on weather

Any comments?  Anything else you'd add to the list for beginners?

Shoes and Clips really don't have to cost $300.  I bought shoes and pedals last year for around $100 from Nashbar.  Here are the links, I am sure they are not the highest quality shoes and pedals but they have lasted for a whole season and I don't see any reason they won't last another.

I also think that sunglasses are required almost no matter what the weather.  They prevent my eyes from tearing when I get going on a downhill, and prevent debris from passing cars from getting in my eyes while training.  I really miss them when I forget to put them on.

Maybe not a must have but I love my Garmin watch.  Makes training so much easier for me, and I love looking at all the data it provides.

I have two cats that I'd like to say would kick all your dogs b**s, but they are truly fraidy cats! lol

You all are awesome posters!  I don't get on my computers much at home because the kids are always on them. So I find myself getting on-line at work.  But as a teacher, well, I can only post lunch times, planning times or after school usually.  So forgive me if I am slow.

This is how new I am.. how do you all get a clip of the other post to comment?  Are you cutting and pasting?  or is there another way to do that with this site?

Iceman, I am happy for you in your 5 year free check up. Also, I'll try your suggestion about sighting a tennis ball.

Coach-I don't really have an A race, I just want to improve my times each race.  My first is the Danskin sprint at Dinsey. Women only. OWS in a lake...ugh. 1,000+ entrants, double ugh what was I thinking for my first?? Second is Marineland sprint in June.  OWS in the Atlantic, again, what was I thinking.  Luckily I will be able to train for that after the Danskin, as I run on the beach twice a week.   I'll just add the swim at that time.  Last sprint for my first season is Club Med which I think also has a lake swim.

KC I love your animated crawl on your signature!

Everyone-Thanks for the overwhelming suggestion to check out swimsmooth.  I'll do that today right after work, after turtoring, after taking the son to the orthodontist, after my swim-bike, after diner, and oh yah, celebrate my birthday.

I know we all have busy lives.  Kind of cool how we still find time to train and not use that as an excuse NOT to train, huh?

Any of you BT'ers dong the FROGMAN Olympic Tri here in Daytona this weekend?  I am going to watch, paying careful attention to the transitions.

I wish I could be in FL this weekend. Supposed to do a sprint with a temp of 40 and rain..  With the ocean swim are wetsuits allowed? With a 1000 people just seat yourself close to similar swimmers and you will be fine.  I loved swimming in the ocean when I did my races, the waves made it more challenging and fun.  My 4lb yorkie may give your cats a run for their money (or atleast he thinks lol) he rules our house even guarding the food from our 70lb boxer.

Welcome, when is your 1st tri this year?  Big dogs are great running partners (except my boxer has no stamina).

Nice to meet everyone!

My tri is scheduled for the very end of July.  I'm already able/comfortable with completing the distances for each sport individually, so I'm planning to use the next few months to get comfortable with the idea of doing them all back-to-back(-to-back, I suppose..)

I agree with you about dogs as running partners, except that the larger one of ours (who is probably a catahoula crossed with something - maybe a rotti) is like your boxer - no stamina.  He is the only dog that I have ever met who needs to be coaxed to run more than a couple of minutes, even at really slow speeds.  He would much rather spend his time on the couch or napping in the backyard..  I'm working on teaching our other dog (a belgian shepherd) to heel, as she is a great runner and just needs to learn that she can't randomly cut in front of me when I'm running.. Once she figures that out, I think she'll make me run faster (if only I could bring her out on race day).. Tongue out

Finally - here is my bio, for those that are new.

Cheekymonkeys1 - Deb

Story - I am a 35yr old Brit, living just outside of Boston. and in my 4th year of triathlon. I started out doing a sprint that didn't go so well. I had no clue what I was doing and didn't really know how to train. The following year, I met some tri peeps, and started to figure things out, did another sprint and LOVED it. Since then I have completed 9 other sprints and 1 HM.

Family - I am married to Kurt, and about to hit out 6th wedding anniversary together, he is my voice of reason/ cheerleader and best friend. I have two teenage kids - Sophie & Marcus, and 3 HUGE cats (Lex, Mica & skinny).

Current training - I am in week 12 of a 20 week HIM plan (June 18th). Have a sprint in 3 weeks (bbrrrr), and possibly another at the end of May, that will 'slot' in to my HIM training.

2010 races - several local sprints, NJ state tri, Buzzards Bay, Mud run, Call to honor.

Weightloss - Oh, don't even get me started. I can NOT get this figured out. I was losing until I started working out more. Since starting the HM / HIM plan I have gained about 8 lbs. I need help here, but not sure where to go. I have tried eating minimal calories and I gain weight, have tried eating more and nothing happens. Clearly my metabolism is all over the place. TOTALLY frustrated.

So, that's me in a nutshell. Tongue out

Computrainer class tonight. We have 1 more week until the class 'moves' outside. Then we have several new classes starting up, including a hill repeat ride. Gee, now doesn't that sound like fun Undecided.

Class tonight was intervals. Then after I managed to fit in a 1,500 swim, first time I have made it to the pool in a week.

Hi Jen - Don't let the comment bother you.  I get a kick out of guys like that when I pass them on my $250 Trek Road bike that I converted to a Tri Bike.  Rememebr -Its not the car- its the engine.

jend702 - 2011-04-13 12:50 PM

Thank you ICE MAN. That is all very useful information. I will definitely try the tennis balls tomorrow.  The very first time I attemped to freesytle I got water in my left ear and had to go to the Dr so Im using ear plugs now and they work great. I will also check for land marks this weekend. Thank you again

Rode 17miles today with a group and a Surgeon with a Ferrari of a bike made fun of mine. Frown

I have a very begginer rode bike with the shifters on the top of my handle bars...he first asked me what they were and finished with "WOW I havent seen those in 30 years" I was too nice to make a smart- return comment but someone in else in the group said something for me. I didnt let him ruin my ride I just kept peddaling.

So I got lazy and just copied my Bio from winter group but not much has changed:

Name:  Tim (tmoran80)

Story:  I have always been a runner since I was a kid (cross country, track, etc...)  I did my first marathon (Chicago 92') as a senior in high school.  Never was fast but just enjoyed the challenge of pushing myself.  Ever since I was little kid I would watch Ironman on NBC and want to do it but never really "believed" I could.  During college, post college and first few years of marriage my fitness consisted of 12 oz. curls and I was the heviest I have ever been.  When we had our first child I made a vow that I would not be one of thoe out of shape dads who cannot do anything with their kids and I signed up for the Chicago Marathon 2008.  I did it again in 2009 but was plagued with injuries.  I decide it was time for Triathlons.  Learned (and still learning) how to swim and bike and I have been addicted ever since.  I covered all the races last year (except IM) with a sprint, olympic and 70.3 IM.  The overall goal is Ironman Wisconsin 2012.

Family Status:
I have been married for 7 years to my wife (Josi) who supports me with my training but can get upset when it gets out of control Surprised.  I have two kids -Evan (6) and Sophia (3).  It is important to me to find that balance between family, work and training.  haven't been able to dial it in but it is a work in progress still

UPDATE - just found out #3 is on the way.  Due date is in October!!

Current Training:
This year I plan on doing the Illinois Marathon on April 30.  Shooting for Sub 4:00.  I also plan to do the Galena sprint and the Racine 70.3 IM.

2010 Races:
Shamrock Shuffle 8K, Galena Sprint, Chicago Rock-N-Roll 1/2 Marathon, Big Foot Triathlon Olympic (Lake Geneva, WI), Branson 70.3 IM, Tri The Du Duathlon, (Kankakee, IL & I won my age group!!!)

Weightloss:
I am fairly happy with my weight but I am really trying to focus on my overall nutrition.  I think one thing that hampered me last season was my nutrition and made me tired and affected my training.

Rockstar:
One of my biggest challenges is that I currently play in two cover bands singing and playing guitar.  We played over 50 shows last year and this year I expect around 70.  It makes it very tough on weekends to get home at 3am and get up to do a long bike or run.  One of the bands only plays on Thursday nights so I am planning on Fridays being my off days but.... we will see how that goes.

Expectations: I participated in my first mentor group last season and had a GREAT experience and made a couple great friends.  I am excited that you have Ironman experience and the USAT coaching background and look forward to learning more from you.  I also hope to be able to help out everyone in this group while also learning from everyone elses experiences.  I expect to be challenged and held accountable for my training goals by everyone in this group and I will return the favor.  It makes it hard to blow off a workout knowing that people are checking up on you!!

Looking forward to great 2011 Season!!!

Congrats on #3, Tim!  I have 3, and I have to say, going from 2 to 3 has been the most challenging.  Some people may have different experiences.  But 2 was peanuts compared to 3.  One word of wisdom - Date Nights.

Thanks for the recommendation for clipless pedals, everyone!  I just got smarter (well, not really) tonight by doing a whole bunch of research, including talking to someone at the LBS.  My current dilemma - would actual shoes be better than a pair of SPD sandals like this Lake LX SDL pair?  I'm thinking sandals would be better, especially since biking is usually #2 and wearing sandal would help with both transitions.  Does this theory hold up?

Okay I am checking in this morning but will be checking out for just over a week as I am off toGreeceandItalyon Friday (15 April) to be back on Sunday (24 April)

I had a really good work out yesterday of a 30 minute hard run and then some pool time

I was a little surprised as I thought I was going to need to go into a recovery week after the way my run felt on Monday (very tired legs and really struggled for my 45 minute run)

I am really excited about this group so far as it seems very active and filled with knowledge and I am hoping I can help out…..I have a good swimming resource in my GF since she is a former college swimmer and currently coaching both HS and summer swim teams.

She has really helped me progress……as I said in my profile/intro- she thought I drowned at my first tri but was very happy to see me come out of the water.  I continue to impress her with my progression in the pool and am really excited to see my advancement in a race OWS According to her I will most likely be cheating as I will be wearing a wetsuit but I will say that was my first mistake in my first tri was not wearing one.  I have since purchased and done a few training sessions in one and can tell the difference.

My goals right now are the 8 sprint tris that I have scheduled (maybe more ). There is not an “A” race for me but I would like to see progression through out the season.  Originally I was going to work up to an OLY but the way my summer plans are and the timing of the OLYs I have chosen not too.

Holy cow, that's a ton!!!  I'm not even sure there ARE 8 sprint tris around here!

Congrats on #3, Tim!  I can't relate, but I know what it's like when my parents bring their two dogs over to make a total of 3 black dogs.  Definitely more than 2!

40ish minute run this morning.  On call tonight, but hopefully will get a trainer ride in...

Last night I ran to the club track workout and home, did 4 miles at the track with 2 X 800, 2 X 400 and 2 X 200 at 8:20.  Quick for me.  7 plus miles.  That was after a hour with light bike recovery from the LTs the night before.  Did 1200 with Masters today focusing on stroke efficiency and speed drills.  Under 20 when I pay attention.

Deb the CT has been great for me this winter. I really like the Computrainers ability to target specific workouts precisely. It is efficient to in that I don't have to ride 20 mins to get out of town then ride the intervals with an eye on the Power Tap and another on the traffic.   Two hour workouts don't morf to 3.  I plan to ride long rides once a week outside and include hill repeats and such in the course.   I may race the Tuesday night time trials at 12.5 miles and 25 miles when the workouts make sense and the coach says to go. I love to race.   But staying indoors during the week is a blessing

Having a girlfriend who is a swim coach is fantastic.  My wife is the most supportive person I know ...as a manager she can't be beat.  It's great to have people in our lives who understand.

You all have a great day.  The IceMan said so.

Good Morning Team.

Tim - congrats on the 3rd due in October - sounds like you were doing some great training in February Wink

Kevin - So I guess with a name like Kevin you can learn how to swim Smile. I will be leaning on you so make sure you check in when you get home. Safe travels and have a great time.

Iceman - awesome workout as always.

Have a great day everyone - bike, weights and swim for me today I hope.

Hi Jen - Don't let the comment bother you.  I get a kick out of guys like that when I pass them on my $250 Trek Road bike that I converted to a Tri Bike.  Rememebr -Its not the car- its the engine.

Thank you. Next time I see him I'll just smile and be proud of the engine that's making my cheap bike pass him up with ease. And congrats on your addition to you family. I wish I could have had just one more. We got a little doggie instead.
