AMY!!!
So how far did you run?
I ran about the equivalent of a half marathon. So in reality about 13.2 ish miles.
My first leg was 5.8 miles, slight uphill, on the side of a highway. It started raining right after I started, and by the time I hit the 1 mile mark it was raining HARD, complete with lightning and thunder. Then it started to hail. And it didn't stop. Until after I was done with my leg. I didn't time my nutrition very well--I ate a sandwhich at what I thought was a good 30 minutes before my start time--and a gel at what I thought was 20 minutes before my start time. But I was off by almost 20 minutes. I also thought this leg was my downhill and flat leg. It was a gentle uphill almost all the way. Ugh. I was sooo glad when I was done with that leg. And happy that I didn't get struck by lightning. One of the trees by the side of the road DID get struck, while there were runners on the road. Oy vay.
My second leg was a 5.6 mile along the side of another highway just before midnight. It was peaceful, the moon was almost full, and there were glow sticks everywhere. This run was a gentle downhill into a small town, then flat. I kicked this one's tail! So much so that the next runner was still sound asleep when I got the exchange point. I felt really good this entire run. I didn't even freak myself out about the shadows. My mind has a habit of playing tricks on me. Kinda like when I swim in OW.
My third leg was into St George, Utah at about 10 am. It was already in the mid to upper 80's, and sunny. It was supposed to be flat. But of course, it wasn't. LOL. There were a couple of pretty good uphills in there. I was tired, and expected way more from myself than I had in the tank. I also forgot my garmin for this leg, and because of the fatigue I was really bad at guaging how fast I was going. All I knew was I was sucking wind, and had to keep taking walk breaks. Turns out I ran about a 10 minute/mile average. So, yeah--I was running reallllly fast (for me) when I was running.
After my 3rd leg, my van was done with all of our runs, so we hit the pool at the rec center in town and swam a little, then showered and ate and headed out towards Zion's Nat'l Park to catch up with the other van (the other half of our team) to run through the finishline together. I posted some pics on FB if you want to take a look.
I'm just glad my calves have stopped cramping now. 36 hours of calf cramps are no fun! Every time I tried to walk yesterday my hubby would just giggle.
