I suggest them to everyone, if it is at all possible. Of course, I am biased since running in Fl can be brutal. I love the stars & moon & the peace and quiet of the early morning. I also like the fact that I have gotten it done before anything else, and the run usually helps start my day off right. If it is your goal, I would suggest that you start getting up a few minutes earlier each morning. Pretty soon you'll be up fairly early LOL.. I live in that brutal Florida state as well.. so I guess I have no excuse :-) Tampa here. WoW... I wonder if we've participated in any of the same events? Probably not. Last summer was my first season triathloning.... If you are at all familiar with this area, I did two of the Crystal River Sprint series... Another in New Port Richey, One in Inverness.. and the Tough Mudder in Dade City. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kate - Nope, I'm a bit further south, Englewood to be exact. My SIL lived in Tampa a while back, so I'm a bit familiar. I did 2 sprints, Longboat Key and E-Wood, 3 HM's (WDW, 2 in Sarasota). And a few 5 & 10 K's. Last year was my first as well. How was Tough Mudder? I've heard they are a blast. Good Luck on the early getting up. It has really helped me get my running in. But I've been that way for the past 25 years (waking up, not the running), so take my advice with a grain of salt. |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello all! I have done 2 workout days in a row. Yesterday: I did my C25K training run yesterday. The way I do the program is I run the same workout 3 days in a row before taking 1 day off and then I move on to the next day's work out and run it for 3 days. So I did C25K: Week 6- Day 2 which is 5 minute warm up walk, 10 minute run, 3 minute walk, 10 minute run, 5 minute cool down walk. Today: I did C25K: Week 6- Day 2 for my run, a 30 minutes on the stationary bike, and 30 minutes swimming. I felt great! I also got new shoes and a new swim suit and swim cap so I am ready to train! I am also making sure that I am drinking enough water and watching what I eat. I have my race schedule planned out for for 2012 already: - 1/15 Louisiana Half Marathon - 2/25 Amedisys Mardi Gras Mambo 10k - 3/4 Rock 'N' Roll New Orleans Half Marathon - 3/10 Louisiana Magnolia Triathlon (Sprint) - 3/24 Oxbow Triathlon (Sprint) - 4/28 Rock "N" Roll Nashville Half Marathon - 10/14 Gulf Coast Half Marathon on the Louisiana Northshore There will also be 2 more sprint tri's that I am going to be doing through my health club that is only for women. One will be in early May and the other will be in early to mid July. Have I bitten off more than I can chew? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No Tri Christmas gifts for me this year. But, right now, I really have everything I want. I just bought myself new swim gear earlier this month, so I'm set. I managed to get a 30 minute run in last night between work and my friends birthday dinner. Then, I oke up in the middle of the night, sicker than a dog. So, I spent today catching up on sleep and trying to feel better. I'll set my bike up tonight, and ride the trainer in the morning. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Travel thru the holidays did not do well for my workout routine. I got one treadmill run in. the other days I was so exhausted I couldn't get up in the morning. I got no tri gifts for Christmas but i did get a Nook Color which I love. My boys (8 and 13) did get camel baks from my running partner. We have family weightloss/workout challenge starting Jan 1st. My 8 year old is the only skinny one so his challenge is to keep moving and learning to ride without training wheels. I am hoping to find a good workout schedule. I am an early morning person except for my 2 evening group runs. I just signed up for a bike workout session at 5:45am in the morning, love it!. I have to do family workout sessions without taking away or adding too much to my workout schedule. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() in regards to Tough Mudder....best race ever!! Did the one in VA in October and had a blast. One bit of warning..schedule TM for off-season as injury is possible and even recovery takes about a week or so. I was so bruised I wouldn't go to the gym for fear people would report my husband for abuse! Of all the obstacles, I hit a rock coming down the "water slide" ride on my glute muscle and walking was very painful the next couple of days! I'm finally logging back in after a quick Christmas break. Got back to the gym this morning for some 1/4 mile repeats (the only time I love the treadmill). I think I have finally crossed over to the dark side....my body really isn't nice to me when I've haven't been eating well or working out. I've really felt miserable and sluggish the last couple of days between MIL's delicious coffee cake for breakfast, munching on m&ms and fudge and taking the kids out for pizza or whatever. Just getting up early this morning and getting a workout in, I feel so much better and I have to say the early morning workouts really get me headed in the right direction and I'm more energetic. So that's my resolution... to keep my workouts to first thing in the AM (worst part is just getting out of a warm bed...it was 11 degrees this morning!) I'm also looking for the good 1/2 marathon for March..something New England/Mid-Atlantic and cheap (I have my eye on Sleepy Hollow 1/2) but wonder if anyone else had some good ones. |

Member ![]() | ![]() Hello all. Just got back from visiting family for the holiday. Had a good couple of days exercise wise. Not so much food wise. :-) I saw someone asked about Tri gifts. My wife got me a Timex Ironman Global Trainer. It is pretty cool. I am still trying to figure it out. I also got enough in gift cards to get my first wetsuit. I was looking at an Orca or Xterra. Does anyone have any opinions on either brand? Hope everyone had a great holiday. |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well I didn't get my workout in today BUT I am going to get to the gym at 5am to do a good 3 hour workout. I am planing to do: - 40 minutes of weights (legs, arms, pushups, core, and stretching) - C25K: Week 6- Day 2 (last day of day 2, I do each day 3 times each to get used to it before moving on) - 30 minutes on the stationary bike - 45 minutes in the pool I don't want to overwhelm myself but I am trying to lose another 15 to 20 pounds before my first tri in March. Also, does anyone drink muscle milk? If so when do you drink it? After every workout or only after you lift weights/do strength training? I hope everyone has a great Friday! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I finally took some time today to set my training goals for the next 3 months. The goals are to run 3x's per week and bike 2x's per week. I found 6 week swim stroke clinic at the Y, that I'm trying to negotiate into my family schedule. Hopefully, I'll be able to make it happen. |

I'm a little concerned about a half marathon in 2 weeks, since it sounds like your running volume is on the low side. Are you sure you're ready for a half marathon that soon? I know you've run one before... It's just so easy to get hurt with running if you try to do too much too soon (whether that's running to far or running too fast). I wouldn't want you to get hurt before the season even really begins! |

There are lots of good free programs on-line (I've used FitDay pretty successfully) and android/iphone apps that can help with that. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So, I've managed to more or less stay on track this week, and have gotten a workout of some sort in pretty much every day this week (except for Christmas Day). Yesterday was a short run in the morning and spin class at night. Today will be a slightly longer run. Thankfully I think I've made it through the Holidays without really gaining any weight - which isn't always the case for me! Now if I can keep myself away from the high fat/high carb comfort foods I love so much in colder weather (think mashed potatoes with lots of butter - yummm) for the rest of the winter, I'll be in good shape.... How's everybody else doing? |

I'm not sure how much they help, but I do like the chocolate milk flavor and I figure it is not a bad meal replacement. I've read that protein within 30 minutes of a workout is a good idea. YMMV |

YMMV Yes - that's generally thought to be true. The recommendation is about 3-4:1 carbohydrate:protein ratio for recovery. It just so happens that chocolate milk is just about the right mix of carb:protein, and makes a great recovery drink. I like peanut butter toast and bananas post-workout, too. Here's a good read on nutrition for endurance training if anyone is interested (a bit technical in places, but not hard to follow): http://www.coachtroy.com/public/456.cfm |

After every workout or only after you lift weights/do strength training? I love muscle milk, since I'm on the milk sensitive/lactose intolerant side and it's one of the few that's lactose free. I usually have a smaller one after a run or long bike/trainer workout. I'll sometimes substitute lunch or dinner with a larger one that's 400 calories. Off for a 5 miler....it's a balmy 28 here...apparently next week the big chill will be setting in. Plan on getting my trainer set up today for a long New Year's Day ride. Everyone have a safe and happy new year! |

We are both milk sensitive so it works for him. I use a protein shake from Arbonne. I ONLY drink vanilla flavors. My ruuning buddy uses the vanilla muscle milk to make her oatmeal after her runs! Just did a 3.7 mile run this morning in the 30 degrees chilly morning air. Plan on a 6 miler in the morning. |
