Since I am just starting with cycling, I wanted to make sure I have a baseline so I can track improvements which will probably be huge for now.

I did a 20-minute test today using TrainerRoad, this time with my power source selected (lol).  The entire test lasted 60 minutes and I found it quite difficult, which I suspect was the idea. I had no clue how hard I should be going so I ended up burning out.  Next time, I'll have a better idea what I can sustain for 20 minutes at a time.

My Functional Threshold Power (FTP) was estimated to be 139.  I know this is probably quite low, so I am looking forward to seeing it increase over the next few months.

Chantal, you are much further along than I ever have been! I am still learning to ride a rode bike. I was all set to ride my Mtn Bike on my first sprint, but decided at the last minute to buy a rode bike, I think I am still barely faster on the rode over my Mtn Bike?

I guess I will have to look into figuring out the whole power thing, at least with Ron's post it sounds much more reasonable than a power meter!

P.S. I fixed the code in my original post if anyone cares?

I almost got a CompuTrainer (long story), but that didn't happen.  In the end, I decided it's probably sufficient to use TrainerRoad to estimate power and possibly get a power meter for my bike at a later date.  It's too early for me to drop $1700 at this stage, I think.

Thanks for fixing the code.  It works great now.

Chantal, don't worry about what others may think of your numbers, Everybody starts at a different level. You will notice a difference on the numbers as you do the work. Now that you know your FTP you can use that in training and get stronger. Good luck, I can't wait to see how it goes.

There was a post earlier about the pain of switching tires between a road tire and training tire for indoor rides.  Totally agreed, unacceptable pain (for me) so I never did change them out and ended up wearing out my road tires quicker.  I finally found the solution today at a great price...   http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/WH406B04-Dimension+700C+Hybr... a rear wheel for only $49!  Free shipping until Monday.  Granted you still need a cassette (i just happen to have my original from when I changed it earlier this year).    I'll be throwing on a training tire and it should be 100 times easier to swap out the entire wheel than to change tires.  Very excited!

Quoted for truth. None of us are going to swim like Phelps, Ride like Lance or run like a Kenyan. You're only competition is you!!!!!!

This week after masters swim a guy about my age, 43, was sheepishly saying how he couldn't stay with the slow lane without fins. Three of us started telling him our horror stories about when we started. I did 2200 yards my first time and I was hypoxic for about 2100 of them. If not for foolish pride I would have take laps off but didn't. The first time I did one arm drills I took on water and though oh crap it's going to be pretty embarrassing when they haul my out of the pool!!!

Be consistent and train at the pace you should for your current level and the results will come.

You'll get there. Running is always hard on the people with bigger frames. I've come a long way but I'll never be a fast runner.

Nice run Scott!!!! you inspired me to go for a good run this morning. I ended up with 9 miles in 1:10. Nothing worse then running and having your music die half way through your run. Did yoga right after and my legs are feeling awesome right now!!! Plus it was in the dark with no headlamp I seen 3 shooting stars as I ran towards the city lights.

Awesome effort!

I only run with music on the treadmill now. On the road between paying attention to my form and heart rate I've gotten used to not having it.

not sure why, but if you copy and then paste into the address bar it works? I actually copied it from the page that wouldn't display and then re-pasted it into the same window and it worked?

Time to get motivated and catch me if you can! Tongue out Which will in turn motivate me.

Have a happy new year and may you meet all your goals.

Ran my 5k New Years Eve, my 25:28 time wasn't as good as I had hoped but it felt like a race and not torture like the last couple of races so I'm encouraged that 2012 is going to be a good year. Going on a 6mile easy run here in a few minutes.

Sounds good. Tomorrow is a slow recovery run for me. 6 miles 10-ish pace. Recovery weeks are sometimes tough to stick to but not this one. I'm toast and need the rest .
