mditfurth - 2012-12-30 12:03 PM Speaking of tune-up races.  Is anyone doing the 70.3 in Galveston (I believe 4/7 or something like that) as a tune up for IM TEXAS?  Veteran ironmen:  do you think the events are too close?

I am! Not a vet though, but coming from Minnesota, a fight with the heat and humidity is needed. Last two runs have been below zero temperatures.

I don't envy your position at all.  It sucks dealing with the heat and humidity and I live here.  Coming from MN is going to be tough.  Best of luck!

crambo - 2012-12-30 6:16 PM I think that's a good tune up race, I've always liked doing a half 6-8 weeks before a full. I was planning on doing 70.3 texas but they moved the White Lake Half in NC the same weekend and it's closer.

Oh nice - I'm going down for White Lake as my half before IMTX as well

A couple people finishing up the first "official" week of training this week, including myself. How did it go?

My body is like, "Oh this again?"

Started with a master swim today - about 2600 yards - arms sore, back sore - wow - another 1400 yds to go

Had a pretty good week. Body not complaining too much and seems to remember what to do. Massage helps!

Haven't really stopped since a late season HIM (maybe 2 weeks), so I'm still just trucking along.

Anyone doing CB & I sprint, which is close to and on the some of the same venue as  2 weeks before the IM .  It's a nice event that I usually do every year but not sure with it being so close to IM TX.

I've done CB&I and IM-TX for the last two years and ma signed up for both again this year. IM-TX is my priority, so the only "modification" I make to my training plan for CB&I is to do my Saturday long ride in late afternoon, after the race. I don't make any other changes.

CB&I is a great race.....very well organized and a fast course.

Feeling pretty good so far. Personally, I always find a day to catch up on my sleep (10hr's worth. Push through it and good luck.

Training is going relatively well....

Thinking about Galveston HIM, too.  Even though I thought 20 weeks wouldn't be any big deal to not race while training, I'm just now realizing just how long it's going to feel before getting to race after all of this effort being put in...seems like it would be a good idea (or at least not a bad one) to get some of the racing cobwebs out before IMTX.

I know I'm being a wuss (especially compared to anyone up north), but I'm finding it so hard to get out of bed when it's so cold outside!  So far, that's my biggest hurdle which I know  I can correct (I normally do not train during the winter months).  Since I know it's going to be hot during the race, I want to be training in something warmer than around freezing temps!

It is all relative...Putting of a "long" run because we have -18F windchill... Cool

Signed up for CB & I myself yesterday.  It is a good race.  Love the bike course.  I think I will use the trip down there to preview the IMTX venue too.  There are always a tough bunch of older age groupers there and I usually get beat pretty bad. So it is a testing of sorts of my training and fitness.

Hey all!

Does anyone have some good advice on accommodation? Hotels? VRBO? Thoughts?

HAHA, we are all too busy training!

As for accomodations, there are several hotels close to the race site, but more than likely, most are booked at this point. You can try Trip Advisor and check numerous hotels in The Woodlands. If no luck there, try Conroe which is just North of The Woodlands and a very quick drive in on race morning.

This is my 3rd year at IMTX and 2nd year staying at the host hotel. The first year I stayed at the Residence Inn on Market St, but as I stated its probably all booked up at this point. I'm sure VRBO probably lists a few rentals but unless you have a group, it may be cheaper finding a hotel room for a few days.

How are the winds on this course? Would I be ok to run a rear disc on race day?

Winds are generally out of the south. The first 2 years they havent been too bad, but there is always a chance that its blowing 20 which will make the ride back into town alot of fun.

I would definitely recommned a disc or disc cover if you got it. You can run a deep front as well, since the majority of the time you will be heading either north with the wind or south directly into a headwind.

It was a nice warm weekend in The Woodlands, and the bike traffic along the course has really started to pick-up. I rode out to Richards on Saturday and saw a lot of solo riders and a number of small groups out on the course.

That sounds like me! Although I do have the added goal of not needing the medical tent at the finish!

Both goals sound eminently reasonable and completely achievable. Enjoy the journey and the experience! Good luck!
