Week 2's training done and 7 for 7 of over thirty minutes again.  I got to be honest I am looking forward to the recovery week after this upcoming week.  I'm not in pain, but can certainly feel the hours of training after doing so little for months.

I hope everyone is doing well!

1st race of the year yesterday - a duathlon - 3.2km - 17km - 3.2km.

Finished in 1.03.08 for 69th out of 195particiapnts. Happy with both run sections but as usual my bike leg was the weakest and saw me loose a load of places!

Splits were:

Run 1 - 12.47

T1 - 1.13

Bike - 34.22

T2 - .52

Run 2 - 13.50

Happy enough overall considering I'm not doing any speed work at the moment Smile. Back in the pool this afternoon!

yeah - I suppose I take it for granted a bit at times!! The cloud covered hill in the background is one of my tough hill runs - 10km solid uphill on mix of road and trail and either 7 or 10km back down. Tried cycling it once but only made it half way before my legs gave in!!Yell

I hit the pool today and felt like a slug- probably because I have terrible sleep hygeine. Eating right and exercising can only go so far wothout proper rest! If only I could practice what I preach

First Plans of the year come back to back for me this weekend.

Saturday - 25 mile charity bike ride, which I will go pretty easy at and try to finish with an average around 16.

Sunday - 5K wellness run, just going to run at a slow steady pace and finish right around 30 minutes.

It just happened that the two fell the same weekend and at great prices, $40 and free.  I just really wanted to do something with others for once, and know not to kill myself while doing either.  The old me would have signed up for the 50 mile ride and just pushed and finished with no regard for what I would loose after the ride was over.  The best thing of all is that after this weekend is over I have a Recovery Week and look forward to it.

Keep working hard everyone.

So lets do this, Everyone. If you need to exchange personal information send a PM, but if you have a general question that everyone can benefit from, just post it here on thread, and I will answer so hopefully everyone can learn from the question.----—------------------------------------------------I was asked about the clicking noise that the rear wheel makes when coasting or back peddling. How to,get rid of the noise.-------------------------------------------------------That sound is completely normal. I have noticed that the more expensive the wheel, the worse the clicking at times. Every brand is different, but my Zipps are really loud. If you could see inside the hub, you would see that there are 3 teeth that click into place past the opposing teeth and it works much like the ratchet in a socket set. The only way to get a more quiet sound is to change the entire hub. Since I listen to my iPod while riding, it doesn't even bother me, but either way seems like they are all pretty noisy if you ask me. Even my disc makes a bunch of noise, which I actually do like. It's intimidating to others, which I really like

Ok Joshua, thx!

1. Bang for buck- why do average carbon wheels cost as much as a bike? Are we suckers?

2. How can we tell when our rear cassette is shot?

3. How much does bike weight really matter if I weigh in at 200+ and will probably add a couple of water bottles- it seems obsessing over ounces on a frame is time lost.

4. During a swim start I prefer to wait out the herd and find an outside lane- any major disadvantages?

5. What is the shortest interval you would prescribe between a HIM and a full distance IM?

Sorry for the stream of consciousness!

There are times when I realize I has so much to learn, specially about bikes. I don't even understand most of y'alls questions. Bikes are suppose to make noise? Why would I want to put a cage on my bike? It's not like I'm bringing my wife's cat. I'm getting the sinking feeling that my Wal-Mart bike isn't going to make the cut.

FYI- I'm exaggerating a little bit. I know what a cage is. But realistically does anyone know a good place just to get a lot of information about bike basics? Like would the local bike shop hold a class or something? I don't even know how to replace tubes much less the benefits of a 3 toothed noise maker on a TTT bike (which all I can see just looks cool and colorful).

I've been googling everything. Lots of info on bikes. Learned how to change a tire with presta valves by watching youtube. So much information to know and learn when doing a triathlon.

1. Do people train with one set of wheels/tires and then race with another set?

2. How do you clean your feet when in T1? Bucket or water bottles???

3. Can someone tell me their setup in the transition area?

1. Do people train with one set of wheels/tires and then race with another set?

I've only one (road) bike and one set of wheels / tires so no choice for me!!!

2. How do you clean your feet when in T1? Bucket or water bottles???

Unusally just have a towel on the ground to stand / wipe feet quickly on - never bothered cleaning with water - more time and more water around!

3. Can someone tell me their setup in the transition area?

I usually have a towel - brighly coloured so I can see it easily - on the ground to the side of my bike. Wetsuit comes half off on run to T1. Helmet is on tribars with sunnies (if needed) and goes on first. Wetsuit fully off. Depending on the weather have a cycle jacket to go over tri suit. Bike shoes are usually attached to bike. Socks are optional (I don't use them for sprints or Olympics but did for HIM). I put talcum powder in shoes (bike & run) and or socks to make it easier to get into them.

Runners are placed just behind towel within easy reach for T2 along with hat, spare sunnies, gel etc.

Image below is close to how I set up but towel is usualy between bikes not in front.

I also use these laces to save time and fumbling about trying to tie them. Once set up they become slip on and you always have the same tightness for every run.

hope thats some help and not too confusing!!

I've been cruising through random people's logs. Y'all are doing great! Keep it up.

Seeing some of the logs of those of you doing IM is totally humbling. Maybe I'll get there one day. I have to remind myself Ive only doing this since January. Regardless, awesome job ladies and gentlemen.

Thanks a lot for the transition image and info. I plan to practice transitions in upcoming weeks prior to my first sprint.

Again, I'm on the iPad, so this will all be blurred together, but here goes...1. Carbon wheels can be a huge waste of money if you don't do some real research. There are several different styles of aero rims, with lots of different shapes. Some are very aerodynamic and some are not. But in general, they are all more heavy than aluminum wheels. So here is how they work: imagine a line graph where the extra weight disadvantage is on one side, and the other side is aerodynamic advantage. Your speed makes the line in the middle, only the line goes on a curve, and there is speed at which the advantage of the aerodynamics out weigh the disadvantage of the added weight. The question is, can you keep your average speed up over that hump in the graph? Because if you are going to only average 17-18 mph, the carbon wheels are only going to slow you down. -- I think the average consensus is that pretty much anything under 20mph, don't waste your. Ones on wheels, but anything over 20 mph, get the right wheels, and you can actually buy speed. I ride a Zipp Firecrest 808 front and a Zipp sub9 rear disc. I only ride them to race (all my training is done on a set of Kyserium Elite aluminum rims) and can average about 1.5 mph faster in an Olympic distance race with my Zipps.
