I have a couple of questions for my up coming olympic race (July 22nd ish?)

What should my target long bike ride be going into the race?

What should my taper look like, one week?

Do I need to plan and test any nutrition for this race?  With sprints I eat before the race and then pack some gatorade on the bike.

On another note, I would like to get rid of the baskets on my pedals and get some shoes and new pedals.  Any advice, recommendations, thoughts before I make this change on the bike?

Thanks

Marcus

Marcus hopefully I can give you some good answers to your questions.

1. Since in Oly is 40k you should be doing AT LEAST 25 miles so you know you can do the distance, but truthfully your long rides should be in the 2 1/2-3 hour range. This way you will get the endurance to ride much longer than 40k and be stronger for the run.

2. Taper is very hard because everyone responds differently to different things. Typically my Oly taper is 2 weeks, but the first week is tough to tell because my volume only drops slightly from normal training weeks, then the week of the race I will pretty much cut the prior week in half. Volume/training time decreases, but intensity is still there.

3. YES you NEED to test your nutrition! Unless you enjoy having possible issues while on the course! As far as nutrition goes for an OLY, Typically you will want to get something small like a gel in your system 30 minutes before the swim. On the bike you want to consume 200-300 calories, for me I have a mixed bottle between my bars that is roughly 220 calories. I will make sure this is gone before I am done on the bike. On the run I will probably have 1 gel rougly 2 or 3 mile mark depending how I am feeling and then you should not take any more gels after mile 3, at this point it will not help you.

What are you mixing in your drink?

Marcus go to your local GNC and get Amplified Endurance Booster. They have Orange and Blue Raspberry flavored and although neither of them taste great I think the orange is way better. This stuff is amazing and I would recommend it to anyone! I take it for almost all my longer rides and hard workouts at the track.

Subject: Poor Timing

This was poor timing for a taper week but I think I did okay.  Didn't get to swim at all though.  Spent 6 nights in the French Quarter of New Orleans and had no alcohol except for half a cup of beer on Bourbon Street.  I did manage to eat some good food but tried not to over do it.

I think I may have "over tapered"; maybe didn't get in quite enough workouts over the last two weeks.  Now my big worry is how to pace during the Olympic.  Jason gave a really good explanation of his race efforts in his previous mentor program earlier this year.  I do not want to burn out early and I am trying to convince myself to not be concerned with my finish position for my first Olympic.

David, you know the drill, just don't over do it. Chances are you will feel really strong for the first 10 miles of the bike, but don't all of a sudden hammer it and then by mile 23 your legs are shot. Stay in control and build your bike throughout the 40k effort. Same goes for the run. Don't shoot out of T2 at 6 mile per mile pace because you feel free good. Build your run and if by the 5k mark you feel stronger than you thought then slowly pick up the pace. The last mile should be everything you got. No worries cause you'll do great. Good luck.

Dave is your race this weekend? If so good luck!
Anyone else have a race.
I have my first 5k of the season. The plan is to go all is and see what happens. I will take my Iphone with me to keep tabs on my pace and such through the race. I am curious to see how my tempo changes throughout.

Have a great weekend.

I have the Columbia Triathlon race this weekend. It is part of the 5150 series put on by WTC. Hopefully trying to qualify for Hy-Vee Championships w/ a top 3 in my age group. It is a large field and very competitive, not to mention a very hard course!

I tried to run this morning but the shin splint pain hit me hard! I have a sprint next weekend! What should I do? Just bike and swim with no running til race day? I will be icing, stretching, rolling and ibuprofen a bunch. Thanks....
This is why I have to lose weight! The extra weight pounding the ground can't be helping. Thanks in advance...

Good luck Jason! I am cheering for you!
I too have a race this weekend but just a Sprint with the swim in the pool. I won't lie I am a little nervous as this is my first race since last August and last August was my first race ever! I was out of town all week on business, hence the "no posts" here on the forum. I did a light taper but did not get a chance to swim...hit the pool yesterday only to realize that they were having chlorine problems and that I couldn't swim in the lap pool...nuts!! I am thinking of going back today just to get in a little swim, like maybe just do my 750 m race distance.
You guys are killing me with your stroke talk! haha I am still way to high and will most likely need some coaching to get it down to something reasonable like "19"!! LOL! Moody nice job on the 800 m swim and at the end of the workout! That is a great feeling!
Have a great weekend training/racing every one!! Howard

Stay off your feet!!! Well okay no running!! I have suffered from shin splints in the past to the point of stress fractures and it is not fun! Do all the above but really concentrate with the roller (hand held type) on the calves. If your calves are tight that is compounding your problem. Remember to stretch it out only if the muscle is warm, after your bike or hot bath, as you want to prevent any tearing of the muscle tissue! Some light massaging along both sides of the shin will also help break the tension. Howard

If I did have any tips, believe me, I'd be using them.

Good luck both on races this weekend.

We have a family 5k local race tomorrow that Kim signed us up for yesterday morning. Kinda torqued the training skedj a bit, but moved the long run to yesterday and doing back to back hard swims yesterday and today, then the long ride and short run off the bike tomorrow after the race.

A pain, but I love family races! And local ones are a blast, too.

Run last night was awesome. 12.4 miles, perfect cool and sunny weather, stride felt light the whole way (5x5' Z4-5a in the middle, too), just smiling the whole time (which in New England makes everyone else that sees you feel uncomfortable!). Just one of those great runs that you feel thankful for afterwards.

Anyway, hope you all have a great weekend.
Matt

Hope all goes well for your event Jason, clearly you have put in the training!! I did the 5km parkrun yesterday, with my 11yo daughter. I wanted to push myself in the middle of my longer run so jogged to the event (4ks) did the 5ks with 400+ other people ( in 29:19), then jogged home 3ks and walked the last km. My daughter had ridden her pushbike to the event, so I pushed it back on the way home. Very pleased with this effort, considering that My best time for the 5k is 28:12 and I didn't push in the first 2ks as I didnt want to hit the wall and fade in the last km and then have a long slow run home! Going out in the water today to brave the elements in my wetty.....shouldn't complain though the water temp is 21-22c and its still getting to 24c outside temp 2wks out from the official winter!

Just finished logging my race report for those of you interested in seeing it. I finished in 1:32:21! Placed 39th of 101, although I was looking at some of the top competitors and some of the top womens times look way out of whack so this may be adjusted yet I don't know. Placed 3rd in my AG, which I really didn't expect! Pretty solid race overall and encouraging for me! Howard

I found this link the pther day, and used it with my Tri predictor time. Hope it is correct as that would give me a sub 3hrs for my Oly which is in leass than two weeks and counting!! I am getting very nervous. You might need to copy and paste the link. Not sure how toactivate it properly on the ipad. http://www.runningfreeonline.com/Tools/Running_Heart_Rate

3AG is a great result! Congrats on the early season fine showing. It definitely bodes well for the season...

We had a great race day yesterday, as well, although just the 5k road race. I PR'd with 19:35 by watch and 19:41 official, 8OA and 3AG (which I also really didn't expect on tired legs!). Kim got SECOND in AG! Our 3 kids ran the mile race. 2 PR'd, one was seconds from her PR, and our oldest potted 3rd in his AG (he's 12). So, all in, a fantastic day of racing in the sun - and a bunch of fun after just hanging around and talking with friends (which is why I love local races).

Then, went home and hopped on the TT bike and did a 36 miler, with hill intervals for the first half and an aerobic ride home, then a 2 mile run off the bike. TT bikes and hills are an interesting combination (ugh), but running off the bike is definitely easier than off the roadie. Really digging the tri-rig!

Holy cr@p!!! That. Is. Awesome.

Many congrats, as that is a truly impressive showing! A champion amongst us. Will you go to Iowa?

I sure do hope some of that rubs off on us.

Off to read the RR, as I have to hear about this one!

Matt

ETA: Read the RR - sounds like a great day and a very smart race on your part (if tough!). Again congrats. As an aside, it must've been WAY cool racing with such a great pro field to watch (to the extent you could see anything through the race haze).

Great news on the races. Way to go Jason and Howard.

My race did not go as well as I had hoped. I think I finished near the top in my AG for swimming and I'm a slow swimmer so that was probably not a good thing. I took it easy on the bike and picked up a little late but never pushed to where I was breathing hard. The course was flat with a 20mph headwind for most of the first half so no resting at all; like being on a trainer. I felt great at the end of the bike and was looking forward to the run but zonked fairly quickly no matter how slow I tried to run; took forever on the run. Maybe I just don't know how to push through the pain yet.

I did not take a snack and fluids during the ride. I may also need to do some higher intensity run training. I did a good amount of high intesity training on the bike trainer this winter but not a lot of total time.

The Memphis-In-May triathlon really has a nice venue. It has been moved to several locations around the Memphis area in the past 30 years. It is now set up just outside of Memphis at Harrah's Casino near Tunica, Mississippi. The swim and transition area are right out the back door of the hotel. The hotel rates are usually high on Friday and Saturday nights so the $92 for triathletes is a bargain. The lake is a large golf course lake that was bulldozed out of the delta cotton fields to make the lake and to provide dirt for shaping the resort golf course when all the casinos moved in. From what I could tell during Saturday's practice swim, the bottom is flat and my daughter (5'2") could stand up anywhere in the lake. You sure wouldn't know it by looking at the lake though. The only hills during the run is up and over the Mississippi River levee and then back up and over again; it makes a tough start for the run.

Elvis shows up every year and sings the national anthem. You don't have to go very far to find an Elvis impersontar around Memphis.

David, you sound disappointed in your race, but you should be well proud. An Olympic distance is a big effort, and coming off the back of afairly chilly winter in the northern hemisphere, I don't know how any one kept their fitness up!
Any handy hints for a fellow novice? I am doing my first Olympic tri in less than two weeks......very underdone on the outdoor cycling ( although I have been going to spin classes and have looked at the trainer a few times). I feel for you having to ride i that headwind, what a killer. I am Desperately hoping for no headwind as that would completely undo me!
Have really practiced running so now my flat 10k is around 1:04hrs.
My biggest concern is pace...is it different from a sprint tri? How much to give it in the first 20k loop of the bike, so I have some in the tank for the run.
your season is just starting so the lessons you learn can inform the rest of the season. ( particularly your first oly) When is your next race?
cheers
Felicity

Congratulations Jason!! That is simply fantastic! You have worked so hard to get to where you are right now you certainly deserve it! Loved reading your report it sounded so exciting! Your wife and inlaws should be so proud!

Some terrific race reports from this past weekend!! Matt sounds like your crew cleaned house!! Congrats to you and your family! David I have to agree with Felicity...you should be well proud! How many people do you know can accomplish what you have just finished! Just doing an Olympic is a feat unto itself! Way to go! I can sure relate to the wind!!! We had strong cold wind all through the race, although it really only affected me on the bike. Especially when your going up an incline into the wind and then a big semi passes you going the other direction and you get hit with the draft!! Almost like hitting a wall! Sucks losing what momentum you may have had!
Back to the training grind this week!! Happy training everybody!! Howard
