Ajokisch - 2013-05-13 6:32 PM Hey there - spots still available?

I'm sure there is....post up a quick bio so David can get you all squared away.

Ok, let's see if I can remember the important bits:

STORY: Swam and raced bikes in high school, but had entirely quit by college. In grad school I started running just to get outdoors a little, we had a nice x-c track that I labored around until I could jog the whole 3 miles at once. First 5k, then 15k, then half marathons, and finally got up the nerve to sign up for a sprint tri last October. They canceled the swim at the last minute due to rough water, but I rode and ran and was hooked. My 5-year-old actually beat me to it this spring and did his first triathlon (the 3-year-old did a trike-and-run, and the aloof 8-year-old decided it looked like fun after all and now wants to do one this summer).

CURRENT TRAINING: I run a lot, because that's what I know how to do. Trying to work in some cycling, although I sold my road bike in the 90's and just have mountain bikes now (put skinny tires on one and called it good). Don't have regular pool access, I usually get to our local college once a month or so - as long as I keep it slow I can do a few thousand yards at a go, so I haven't worried about that too much. Have been doing a lot of strength work lately to get in shape for Tough Mudder, but I'll probably scale that back after this week (see below).

2013 RACES: Doing Tough Mudder Jacksonville this coming Saturday (momentary lapse of common sense), then signed up  for 3 sprint tri's in June, July and August though I may upsize one or two to Oly's if I feel ok after the first one.

BEER: I like to go for whatever is local, but if I have a choice I'll spring for the darker stuff - I'm a sucker for anything that has "black" in the name.

"Mmmmmmm  Beer!" -Homer Simpson

If there is still room I'd like to join.

Here is my bio:

NAME: Matt

STORY: About a year ago I decided I needed to loose some weight and get in shape.  They crazy idea to do this through tirathalon came when I saw a guy at the pool during my daughters swim lesson that still had his numbers on his arm from a recent race.  It took me a good 6 months after that day to really get started but I'm now doing my best to make this a reality.

FAMILY STATUS: Married just shy of 13 years with 3 kids: 8, almost 6, and 3.

CURRENT TRAINING: I'm currently training 6 days a week with between 6 and 10 workouts a week evenly spread between swim/bike/run.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: I have done 3 5ks.

2013 RACES:  Current plan is to do the Calloway Gardens Sprint on June 16.  After that is TBD.

BEER PREFERENCE: IPA, the hoppier the better!

WEIGHT LOSS: Started at about 250.  I'm currently only down to about 243.  I really need to start paying more attention to what I eat.

Welcome to the group and congrats on the weight loss!  Hows your training for the Sprint going?

Most important question - Roll Tide or War Eagle?

Evening all - Sorry I don't have more time tonight to catch up on everything that was posted today - wow, it's been busy in the BDAS! I promise to catch up tomorrow and I will also make a new chart with everyones name.

Managed to get in a short recovery ride tonight.  I won't lie - I'm a little sore from Sunday's Sprint.  Tomorrow morning - I plan on getting in a recovery run as well as a nice easy swim.

I ate well today so I celebrated with a Burning River IPA from Great Lakes Brewery in Cleveland.  Pretty tasty!

Good night!

Burd - 2013-05-13 11:28 AM Just got in from my run.  I have no idea how I did this but with a 5 run 2 walk I averaged 11:37.  I looked down during my run parts and was constantly under 10:00.  Had the HR spike a few times but overall I was at a moderate effort.  The effort felt a ton less than it did when I was running before.  I guess dropping the 32 pounds since the last run helped more than I thought.  I can only imagine when I get in better run shape and drop the last 29 pounds how I'll be doing.

That's very encouraging Alex.  Each run becomes a stepping stone for your next.  Way to go.

Name: Octavio Ortiz

Story: I grew up playing soccer and riding BMX's until I had knee surgery 8 years ago. Tried to continue playing soccer but too many frequent ankle sprains steered me into running. I began running late 2011 and I completed 7 half marathons but not without injuries. I decided I would introduce biking into my exercise routine at the beginning of this year, I bought my first road bike and love it. I noticed I can recover faster from a ride vs a run, a couple of months ago and with some encouragement from my GF I decided I would give triathlons a try. Unfortunately I do not known the proper way to swim free style but I'm currently taking swim lessons and hope to complete my first tri in September.

Family Status: I live with my GF and her 12 year old son, we've been together for 5 years.

Current Training: My current training is focused on swimming lessons and getting to the pool on my own to practice what I've learned. I still focusing on running since I have a couple races coming up but because a nagging plantar fasciitis injury I've been focusing on biking.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: January skipped HM due to ITB issues, March Hot Chocolate 15K and SD HM, April skipped La Jolla HM due to the plantar fasciitis, June 1st 66 mile bike race, June 23rd Mammoth HM, August AFC HM, September 22 Tri Rock SD (depends if I'm good to go with the swim) Sprint or Oly. Maybe one more half before Thanks Giving and there's potential for a sprint or two before september if my swim is good enough.

BEER PREFERENCE: IPA's, Belgians, Saisons, Sours (budget permitting), Strong Ales.

Weight Loss: Went up to 265 after surgery and was stuck there until last year, I'm currently at 250 but I would love to drop to 190. I need to make a drastic change in my eating habits but I hate counting calories.

All a board!

I may do all 12 runs, as the bike is not well, and the water is still pretty chilly.  Does today count?

WAR EAGLE all the way.  Came to Auburn for school some 20 years ago and never left.

Training for the sprint is going pretty well.  If I can just figure out how to swim more than 100 meters at a stretch I think I'll be ok.

I'm up for the May Challenge.  No time limit on swim?  I'm doing about 15 min pool workouts at the moment.

Today counts! Hey any swim in aSurprised lake for people in Canada or near the canadian border counts as 2 for freezing your butt off!

Challenge accepted. 4 miles at lunch today, just under 36 minutes.

Now I need to think of an appropriate beer selection to reward myself at month's end. I'm liking this system...

Question: How do you know when it's a hard workout?

Answer: When you throw up a tad in your mouth near the end.

1800 yards in the pool followed by 50 hard minutes of strength training with only 30 seconds between sets and exercises.  I was so spent when I left the gym I had to sit in my car for 15 minutes before I could hold the wheel to drive home.

Good evening folks, and hello to our new members.  If you like beer, and training, you'll fit in just fine.

Today, recapping:  Trainer Road's 8 Days in California, Day 3.  Hello Pain and Suffering, my two new friends.  Followed that up with a 4 mile brick at (or attempted) tempo pace.  Add Agony to Pain and Suffering.

Seriously though, the 8DC is some of the most fun I've had on the trainer to date, and chasing that bad is keeping me on the trainer, even if it is 85 degrees outside and it begs for an outdoor ride.

I also borrowed some clip-on aero bars, so I'm making small adjustments to the new position.

T-Minus 11 days until my first race, so things are going well.

Thanks, trying to catch up now that I have a little more time. Questions on general conduct/etiquette, I'm completely new at this; I read through the instructions on mentor forums but didn't find all the answers I was looking for:

  1. Will post questions, etc. when they seem appropriate, but is there any regular routine that you follow? I see the weekly goal sheets, do people just reply and fill in their weekly goals?
  2. I did check my training log access and I believe I'm set to allow any registered BT member to view, but let me know if not.
  3. Any other etiquette things that I'm not aware of? I know that's a broad question, I guess more of a request that if I do something dumb someone please let me know, it's a safe assumption that I don't mean to be rude, just ignorant or inept.

Good night all, looking forward to a great season of triathlon (and beer) this summer!

Not really - be polite, and all that  DQ posts a weekly goal list, and generally everyone will chime in, and then we recap at the end of the week.  DQ will also bring up topics for discussion from time to time (nutrition, dealing with injury, transitions, etc.), but generally feel free to discuss whatever you like.
