Expert 1480 Somewhere in the Swamps of Philly | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Best of luck E!Coming to an inflection point about shutting down tri training for the year. Focusing on personal priorities (family and my health) and the burdens of work, proper tri training just seems like too much. Not sure I want to race HIM distance at less than optimal training and health. May opt for some Oly races and marathon training in the fall. When the rigors of training (or missed training) become stressors, I think I know the answers. Have a week or so to make the call. |

Have a week or so to make the call. always remember that what we do is not a burden if done properly, more like a ground cable to stay in touch with reality and a way to vent. You don't have to train a lot nor hard, but frequency is key. Running is the one thing that takes less time to set up, and you can do it pretty much anywhere. Keep rocking Joe! |

Master 2238 Dallas | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN debaston - 2013-05-15 1:19 PM Deb, incredible story! Great to have you here!Would love to join - please tlet me know what to do next. Here is my story:
NAME: username: debaston/ first name: Deb STORY: I have been an athlete my entire life, grew up on Miami Beach and have been swimming competitively for many years. I am 47 now. I have completed a couple of triathlons in the past - nothing major. I have always wanted to do an Ironman. While training for the Lawrence, Kansas half in 2010, I went skiing and shattered my right knee. After reconstructive surgery and donor tissue being implated I was told I wouldn't be able to compete again, much less regain range of motion. I am stubborn and I have more range of motion now than I did prior to the accident. I began training again with no race planned and then in November of 2012 I was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's Disease and instead of succumbing to it, I decided to push harder than ever. In all honesty, I look and feel better now than ever before. I need guidance to get through this on many levels. FAMILY STATUS: I am divorced and have 3 amazing "kids" who are 26, 24 and 20. They are all extremely successful and 2 live in Utah, 1 is a chemical engineer. My daughter just got married in March and my son will be getting married late next year. My kids were there when I crossed my finish lines and they are my biggest fans. I have 3 dogs and 1 is my ofttimes running companion. I live in St. Louis, Missouri. CURRENT TRAINING: I have been following my own training schedule and logging on Training Peaks. After the knee injury, I seem to have a mental block about running. Swimming is my strongest leg and I participate in an open water practice on Saturday mornings in a wetsuit. I have a great tri bike and am in the half-distance training stage. My goal is to finish, of course, but I need to cut time from my run and remove the mental block and get into a good groove for the bike leg. Lots of strength training (helps with the PD). THIS YEAR'S RACES: Innsbrook sprint triathlon, Lake St. Louis Olympic triathlong, Big Shoulders 5k swim Chicago, Half-Ironman Miami October, 2013. I am participating for Team Fox and raising PD awareness at the same time.
FUTURE RACES: Ironman full distance. WEIGHTLOSS: I am fortunate that I am in great condition weight-wise. I am 5'8", 138 pounds. WHY I'M A GOOD MENTEE: I listen and absorb advice without question. I am 100% dedicated to training for my races and continuing on, even with adverse situations trying to get in my way. I need someone and a group to guide me and get me over the humps of training so that I can do well in my race. I would like to double my run mileage like I have seen people say and add speed to my bike ride. I love multi-sport and hope to be doing it for the long haul. |

Veteran 360 Waukegan, IL | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Hey guys. Thought I'd share a new PR. Ran a 5k this morning. Very local fundraising event put on by the sophomore class at the high school. Maybe 100 people total. I beat my old PR so bad that I think the course might have been short. I'm headed out with the GPS later to check. Old PR for 5k was 19:40 set during an 8k run in April (before that it was 19:49). Today I ran 18:13. Pretty good... Unfortunately, the cross country studs from the high school showed up too so in a race of around 100 people, 18:13 was good enough for 6th overall. Very happy with the run. (Google Earth says that the route was 3.1 on the dot...interesting). |

Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN I finished my Marathon in 4:21:39. Last year's time was 5:24:40. I never really counted it because of the special circumstance when my running partner had a medical issue. Now is the part where one year later I say to Ernesto and Chris, you were right. It only took me a year to acknowledge this, but it wasn't because of misfeasance or malfeasance, but instead a lack of knowledge. There is a huge difference between doing a marathon just to finish and running for time. There is no comparison to how your body reacts both during and following the race and the amount of physical exertion it takes to complete it. Last year you saved me from a lot of heartache both during and after the race. I was not in a position to run it. Thank you. |

An extensive race report to come up, especially because I want to keep others from doing what I did and avoid having such a terrible day. Thanks for the support on facebook and here. It means a lot to me. |

Expert 1480 Somewhere in the Swamps of Philly | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - OPEN Jim: Great result on your marathon. Huge improvement. E: That musty have been a hell of a race. At least you know Tahoe won't be that hot. I'm curious how you get yourself ready to race at altitude? So, yet another visit to the doctor and all my endocrinology tests came back negative. No diabetes, no thyroidism, no vitamin deficiencies. At this point, I really do not have another clear medical path forward to explain to explain the neuropathy. One suggestion was to train less and see if the tingling in the hands and feet go away. I'm not quite there. i'm planning on trying accupuncture to see if I get any relief. WIfe had thumb surgery on Wednesday. Pulled off the nail and insert two screws into the nail bed. Last week wasn't a good one. I still managed to train every day and am trying to push forward with the HIM at the end of June. |
