New user 12 | Subject: RE: Todd's Tri Turtles 2 (Beginner, Sprint, 5K, 10 K) - Closed at the Moment Hi all, Having taken a quick look at my exercise log for the week I haven't gone too bad. I have managed to exercise on 5 of 7 days. This is 5 days more than on any day of last year...or the year before that (you get the idea). I would have completed another day but these pesky things called work and commitment resulted in a modification. However I have 3 "must do" workouts completed and 2 bonus days. Tomorrow starts another week. But far more important than any of that is I pick up my first road bike tomorrow. Expect questions on saddle soreness in the near future. He who dies with the most toys wins . Michael |

25 Grand Junction, Colorado | Subject: Swim input... So the swim will be my biggest challenge. I'm looking into Total Immersion and starting to work on that. A few general questions: * How best to keep up with laps during each workout? I have a Garmin 305 I could use. What do others do? * Tri shorts -- I need to get some and start doing some mini-bricks to get used to it. Recommendations for shorts on the cheap? Also, cycling - I'll be using my cheapo schwinn hybrid for any races this year. Are clipless pedals and shoes something I should look into? Never used them before. Can get used setup for $50 or so (with shoes). Or I could just get some of the toe clips and mount to existing pedals. Thoughts? Finally -- distance. Never done a tri, but wanting to do Olympic, with a race about mid-May. Goal to finish. Too ambitious? Thanks! Mark |

Extreme Veteran 1574 | Subject: RE: Swim input... Originally posted by mbrassette So the swim will be my biggest challenge. I'm looking into Total Immersion and starting to work on that. A few general questions: * How best to keep up with laps during each workout? I have a Garmin 305 I could use. What do others do? Answer - I started out with a Timex 30 Lap Ironman Watch $30. I would hit the lap for each set I did whether 50's or 250's. Do not put your 305 in the water unless you don't want it anymore. They are not waterproof like the 310 xt and 910 xt. I can tell you that after 4 years i still lose count while I'm doing sets. * Tri shorts -- I need to get some and start doing some mini-bricks to get used to it. Recommendations for shorts on the cheap? Answer - Shop the Internet for Deals - I got my last pair through Amazon for 50% off - they were Zoot Pro's. I have also used 2XU, which were nice but i like the Zoots more. You also have LG, Desoto, Tyr, and the list goes on and on. Also you don't have to kill yourself right now trying to do bricks, that will come with time. Concentrate on getting a routine and completeing each distance necessary for race day. Also, cycling - I'll be using my cheapo schwinn hybrid for any races this year. Are clipless pedals and shoes something I should look into? Never used them before. Can get used setup for $50 or so (with shoes). Or I could just get some of the toe clips and mount to existing pedals. Thoughts? Answer - If you are going to use the hybrid I would probably say to just get some cages for your pedals. The plus to this is that you don't have to chance shoes in transition. Now as you improve and want more then the clipless pedals are the way to go to get maximum benefit. I also say this because things are expensive enough starting so what you save on the pedals can go towards your tri shorts or something else that you'll need. Finally -- distance. Never done a tri, but wanting to do Olympic, with a race about mid-May. Goal to finish. Too ambitious? Answer - Not to ambitious and depends on training and were you are at nearer to race day. The question to ask yourself is why does it have to be an Olympic, why not a Sprint. I do not say this to say you can't because you can. I just want to make sure that you don't get caught up in what so many others do, which is Distance is King. A Sprint is an accomplishment and i would add is great to let you see what's going to happen to you on race day. You will be doing everything for the first time in a race setting, do you want it to be at a longer distance. The first should be done for the experience and the joy / accomplishment of it. No need to just out farther than you have to, unless you have your our reason and the ability. Trust me you will be nervous enough the morning of your first race. Once again, can you in the time frame with work, Yes, Should you? Only you can know. Thanks! Mark |

Extreme Veteran 1574 | Subject: RE: Todd's Tri Turtles 2 (Beginner, Sprint, 5K, 10 K) - Closed at the Moment Ok, so many in this group have talked about the swim an swim training. I can not teach you strokes or be in the pool, but I can tell you that You Tube is full of helpful videos. There is also Total Immersion and several other things to help. In the simpliest of terms I can tell you that you get better a swimming by swimming. I know everyone knows that but it is true. Your times and distance will improve as you swim if you are doing so regularly. You will get to a point where your times really will not change and at that point you will have to perfect your stroke and fix the problems in order to see time improvement. I just always swam for distance when I started and continued to increase my distance until I knew I could swim a mile and a half without stopping. I did not do so every swim but I did try to swim at least 1 mile non stop once a week. Bare in mind this was after swimming 3 times a week for quit a while. I just this year joined a Masters Swim group to work on my stroke which is no where near perfect because I wanted to lower my swim time an see if I could do so with less effort. I started back tonight and this was the swim workout that was set for us for the 1 hour session. Warm up 100 yards Free, 100 yards Pull, 100 yards Kick (One after another without stopping but at an easy pace) 1 Minute Break 300 Yards followed by 15 second break then 50 yards easy followed by a 30 second break 300 Yards followed by 15 second break then 50 yards easy followed by a 30 second break 300 Yards followed by 15 second break then 50 yards easy followed by a 30 second break 300 Yards followed by 15 second break then 50 yards easy followed by a 30 second break 300 Yards followed by 15 second break then 50 yards easy followed by a 30 second break 300 Yards 1 Minute 30 Second Break 6 x 25 yards sprint all out with 45 seconds between each 100 yards cool down free Swim Total Distance - 2575 Yards |

309 | Subject: RE: Roll Call Hi everybody, I'm still here and completed my first week of training. I completed 3 bike rides totalling 58km and 1 run for 2.4km. When I run at the moment it's 200m jog & 200m walk. I'm running on thick grass at the local football oval to lessen the impact on my kness. Didn't manage a swim last week. Pretty pleased that I lost 1.3kg One of the key lessons learned this week was that time management is of major importance. I'm now giving workouts #1 priority and scheduling them so there are no clashes with other activities. Rod |

309 | Subject: RE: Swim input... I try and swim in the bay when possible as that is where the races are held. On previous attempts to get fit I would train at the local pool and when I had a reasonable level of fitness I hit the beach. Swimming in open water brings in variables such as swell and chop which can make getting a rythm and breathing techniques harder. I find turning my head over my shoulder rather than to the side minimises taking in water. Rod |

Regular 87 Libertyville, IL | Subject: RE: Roll Call Daniel - longrun26 Still in. It has been a wonderful and busy week. I have been working on cardio and body weight exercises. With these goofy temperatures and all the snow north of Chicago hard to do anything outside right now. Even the dog does not like being outside. I have a 7k run on the calendar for the end of March and a Duathlon (Run 2M Bike 17M Run 4.2M) the middle of May. Sticking closely to a Paleo/Primal (no processed foods, no sugar or grains) eating schedule. Hope all is well with everyone. Daniel |

To be disinclined to get off one's arse. To be unwilling to do something Okay I know this is a very UK expression but it is how I am feeling. But it made me wonder. When you "can't be arsed" what gets you to take action? Tonight I would like to get on the turbo and spin for an hour maybe more. I'm not ill, injured or overstrained, but... I can't be arsed. SO! I recalled why I am doing this. Imagined one day finishing down Ali'i Drive (okay it's going to be in the dark but it's my dream ), crowds cheering and "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC is on the PA system. Getting on the turbo will get me one more step along the road closer. I tell myself that even if I do just 5 minutes it will be something. If I still feel I can't be arsed I can stop. But I know I won't. What gets you off your arse ( for USA friends) ? I'd love to hear. Check my log to see if I did 5 mins or more I am dying laughing at your post!! Especially the Al'ii Drive part! It would be 16:59 if I ever make it that far! lol I used to think I wanted to do full course but now I only want to do the half IM distance. The song *Thunderstruck* is what they blast over the speakers whenever my husband comes back from a deployment. All the CH53 and V22 Helicopters fly together in a formation and they shake the entire hanger and ground.... that song is blasting via DJ in the background and it is a incredible sight to see! Best wishes to you on your training and getting off your arse! Al'li drive is coming up around the corner for YOU!!! |

Was supposed to do a short run today but was worried it'd be too much to take... For some it's Ice for others it's Heat - Find out which works best for you. The best piece of advice I can give you is to get some protein in you within thirty minutes after a hard workout. This can be in the form of a Protein Shake or as simple as Chocolate Milk. Just remember the more protein you take in the more water you need to drink. |

You are spot on in that some times you have to be a little selfish if you want to get in your workout. Other times they will have to take a back seat for family / work obligations but usually you can get it in by waking an hour early or going to bed an hour later. |

I am thinking of re-opening the group to allow others that may want to join to do so. I would not do so until Monday and even then those that posted originally will always be welcome to come back. I just want to give others the oppurtunity if those that originally signed up are not going to participate. I feel that a group like this works better with mulitple people participating and sharing experiences and accomplishments. I will leave this up to those in the group that are currently active. If All those who originally signed up don't show interest by Monday do yall have a problem with me opening it up again. I have to state again that even if it is re-opened the original people will always be welcome to return. |

15 | Subject: My Week Hi everyone! Sorry for the delay in posting! Here are my workouts recently (also in my training log) Last Wednesday (1/1/13) – Took Shelly on a 6 mile ride to break her in a bit. Last Thursday - 30 minute run Last Sat – 8 mile run with my Galloway group. Felt good till mile 7. Going to move up a pace group next week. Monday – Bodypump class (weight lifting) for 60 minutes. Made me really, really, really sore. So sore I couldn’t do my 30 minute run scheduled for Tuesday. Tuesday – Went to a bBike repair class at REI. HIGHLY recommend! I learned so much about Shelly and feel much more comfortable taking her on the road now. Wednesday – 100 pushup program on an incline. Thursday (tomorrow) – 30 minute run Friday – Rest Saturday – 10 mile run with Galloway group I’m working on waking up earlier to do at least 45 minutes of working out in the morning. Because of work and wedding planning, a lot of time my nights are really packed and it’s hard to squeeze in exercise time. I’m a little depressed about the weather and wish I could run outside; ready for the temps to warm up! :-) ??? - How do you all deal with sore muscles? Darcie – I had to google Richlands (I’m pretty new to NC!) but we are pretty close! Let me know if you are ever in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area and we can ride/run/swim together! |
