There are definitely people who do HIM in their first season.  It depends on what your goals are.  If you are out to finish, I think you can do it provided that you have enough time to dedicate to training.  Personally, I didn't want to go too quickly and wanted more experience at each level before going on.  I'm looking at doing my first HIM probably next year.  Going from a Sprint to Oly was harder than I thought.

Good afternoon everyone,

Wow what a week and weekend. I just finished my first week back and training. I did it! Realistically I have a ways to go as nothing feels the same. My first Tri is in the end of May so I have time.

I took advantage of the good weather and got the bike out this weekend. Saturday was a bust. I got the bike up and ready only to notice a back flat. Then noticed, no tube spares. Off to the bike shop, bought a couple to spare. Back get dressed and out I go. Gears don't work. Looked down, chain off and caught. Back in to fix the chain. NOW off I go. Two miles later, flat on front tire. Bent down to really think about my luck and stranger pulls up to assist. Needless to say, only did 6 miles Saturday. Sunday did 15. Endurance and hills need some work.

Was able to get in 2 swims and 3 runs in addition to the outside biking. So all and all not a bad week.

I haven't really followed a specific workout like I am reading for everyone else. I don't know about it working or not because to be honest never tried. It was more that I joined a spin class, ride my bike out by myself, run out around the school while waiting for my daughter and constructed some swim workouts. For now until I am 100% healthy and back, I am not doing double workouts or structured. But I am working out everyday. I give myself until the beginning of February and then I plan to rethink my plan so I can reach an Olympic level, especially in running.

Good afternoon everyone. I hope everyone had a great weekend. We had a pretty good one here. The weather was nice enough yesterday for me to get my mountain bike out and hit some trails nearby. I haven't rode on them yet, and even though it was really muddy, they were a lot of fun - very technical with sharp turns, rocks, roots, and steep hills. I can see this year being an expensive year in the cycling department as I would like to get a new road bike and a new MTN bike. We'll see what happens.

Other than the bike ride yesterday, I didn't do much else to speak of. I watched the KC Chiefs get beat by the Colts. IMHO, we should have switched to our backup QB after the 4th 3 and out. But, hey, what do I know, I'm not a coach.

Congratulations on a successful back-to-training week, Kelli! It sounds like you were able to get some good mileage under your feet/tires, even with all of those trials and setbacks.

I am impressed that you can get out there and train on the fly. I just have to have some larger structure or it will always get pushed and never done. Good job about getting and staying motivated - we are all cheering you on. If you update your training logs on the site, we will be even louder and more focused cheerers.

I had a great weekend as well. It was the first quiet one in several weeks. I finished up the last of my reduced-duration recovery week, and am excited about kicking it back up to full throttle this coming week. Now that I am signed up for my triathlon, the date seems to loom ahead of me more than it did only a week ago.

I signed up for swimming lessons yesterday, finally. They don't start until the 30th of January and runs 4 weeks, which will give me about 3 months until the triathlon after my lessons finish. Hopefully, that will be enough time to build on those lessons and get my form and power to some semi-acceptable level by the end of May. I only have to swim 250M for the triathlon, so I don't think it will be that hard. However, whenever I get into the pool and try to swim freestyle, 250M feels like forever. That is why I am taking lessons. When I went to the pool yesterday, it happened to be in the middle of the Masters swim class/training. All of those people just make it look so easy. It just reaffirmed my decision to take lessons and plow through this limitation instead of fall back and just work on duathlons.

The triathlon that I had my eye on opened its registration on January 1. After a week, it has just about reached it capacity of 500 racers. 500 people signing up for a short triathlon 5 and a half months in the future. Although it is obviously a drop in the bucket compared to the total population of the Northern Virginia area, it still it a little testiment to the popularity of triathlons, that not everyone is overweight and sedentary, or at least New Year resolutions are really motivating.

Hey Group,
I have my first Master’s swim of the year tonight and I am a little nervous.  I have been swimming twice a week with the same group since October, but I haven’t been in the pool since December 20th.  I’m scared that I have forgotten every thing I learned and have lost what little swim fitness I built-up before the holidays.  Do you think that this is possible?

No way. And I bet that getting in the pool and focusing on technique will make the stress vanish.

You'll do great.

You'll be great, Erin.  It'll all come back to you as soon as you get in the pool.  I stress out about the same thing when I've been away for awhile, too, but it's all for nothing.  Enjoy your swim tonight.

Taking lessons is going to help SO much.  Swimming can be really intimidating, but it's a great that you signed up. That should give you lots of confidence.

Which tri did you sign up for?

Sounds like everyone had a great weekend of training!!  Good job everyone!  I'm jealous - haven't been able to train because of bronchitis.  I should be able to start running again this week, which I am very excited for.  I need to start training for my half-marathon in March!

Jen - which half marathon are you running? I have a half coming up in June - I'm hoping to go under 2:10 (2:05?).

I'm running the Shamrock Half-Marathon in Virginia Beach over St. Patrick's Day Weekend; it's actually an 8k on Saturday and the half mary on Sunday.  I'm hoping to do sub-2:30.  I did 2:40-ish last year, so I think that's pretty doable.

Well I have finally put in information about my training on the logs or calendar. I never did it before so it will be great to see the big picture and work from something other than my head. As I look at it now, I need more run. I was hoping to do about 6-10 a week. Is everyone keeping the log?

Where in Northern Virginia are you? My sister lives outside the district. I was planning on practicing open water swims at the lakes in her neighborhood. There is also an Olympic Tri in June there that I was hoping to do.

Sorry to hear about the bronchitis. That has been running through my family.

I'm back from swimming and it was awesome.  The coach gave use a good hard workout and I kept up just fine.  I guess no one else from the class swam over the holidays either and we also had alot of new folks.  Thanks everyone for your words of encouragement.

It is also great to see more of us using the logs.  I haven't been here that long but I still reflect back on past entries when I feel discouraged and realize how much progress I have made.

I am about 15-20 or so miles south of DC on I-95. The people that are running the sprint triathlon that I am currently signed up for also are running an Olympic distance in June (Is that the one you were talking about?) http://www.finswheelsfeet.com/.

The Olympic length one is only about 5 or so miles south of me. :) I am not ready to commit to that distance yet, though. Maybe next year.

It looks like a few BTers are signed up for that one already: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/directory/link-detail....

I signed up for the Virginia Run Sprint Triathlon in Centerville, VA

Although it is a modest race, it would be a large accomplishment since I was coming off the perverbial couch a few months ago.

Yes it is the Montclair one. She lives in those neighborhoods. It stresses me to try that one, because of the run distance and hills. But she said that last year it seemed many were just trudging along and didn't look like they knew what they were doing. I figured at least I will try and train for an Olympic though and see what happens.

Thanks for the link.

Don't worry about the site of the race!  All of the tris I've done have been on the smaller size.  I think that's a benefit, personally.  The bigger running races I've done tend to be frustrating because they are so crowded.  I was mostly curious to see if it is one that I'm planning on doing, too.  I don't usually do that sprint.  I might do the Olympic, though.  Lake swims are much better than trying to swim in the ocean or in a river.

Thanks for the info on the hills!  I did Naylor's Beach Olympic tri (www.richmondmultisports.com ) and it was pretty tough.  The river swim was the hardest part, but there were some pretty tough hills on that bike course, too.  I'm thinking about this one now, too.

Yeah, Erin!!  Good job!

I use the logs all the time.  They are one of my favorite things about BT.  It's great that so many of us are using them. It's nice to have people visit your logs and give inspiration.  And, it's great to look back and see how far you've come.

Erin - great job on your swim last night! I got 500m in the pool and it felt wonderful! I think I am addicted to swimming! LOL!

I made the following table w/hyperlinks to this message and everyones log.  I put it in my goals section of my log.  Just though I would share.  If you are interested in doing the same you can copy the table from here and paste it in your own log, this way it will be easier to send inspires.  I can post more detail if there are any problems.

For anyone interested in copying the table:

1.Go to your "Control panel", which is beside "Home" and above your "Logoff". Once you are in the control panel got to the drop down box that says "Use rich edit box when composing messages?" and change to "Tiny MCE Editor (experimental)". Then hit submit and got to your training log and hit the icon that allows you to change your goals, friends, links, etc. You should notice that above the areas where you can change your goals it has toolbars like in Word.

2. I then copied the table out of the forum where it was posted and pasted it in to the area of short term goals in "Edit your links and equipment".
