Last Week: I hit all of my workouts, but 1 Sunday run, last week and so I'm very excited about that. I also finally hit the pool (albeit only 1x, that's better than no swim at this point). All my workouts felt great and adding the weight training back in kept things mixed up. I also found a GREAT energizing song, "IMMA SHINE" from the soundtrack of Step Up. So I start and finish my runs with this... which is working out perfectly for now.

This Week: Keep to my posted schedule and get atleast 2 swims in (as long at the -5 to -20 degree weather seizes, I can't think about a swimsuit with those temps outside, even if I swim indoors BRRRR!).

O.K., here it is Tuesday already...finally an update from Sal...

Last week: I had a week like John.  Don't worry John, I've taken a week off before, and still am able to come back at almost the same fitness level, AND with more motivation to train.  Was out of town traveling most of the week.  After working 12 hr days and goofy hours, the last thing I wanted to do was jump on a treadmill.  Being that it was Georgia (Conyers), there was no indoor pool.  Using the outdoor pool was out of the question (35F).  I did get in some track speedwork, weights and a 1 hr spinning class towards the end of the week.

This week: Like John, I'm off to a good start (sorry to hear about the bike, John).  A brick yesterday pushing LT on the bike and hill work on the treadmill.  Swim time trial this morning.  Off from my PR time for 500 yds, but it's 'early' in the season, right?  Plan on getting a run in tonight, another brick on Wednesday, 'endurance' swim on Thursday (20 min continuous), a run on Friday, and another brick on Saturday (hill work on the bike, 2:15 min run).  This MAY not happen.  We have friends coming in from Chicago.  Rest day on Sunday...

Have a great week everyone.  Stay warm...

Good job! Your training is looking good. How are your legs on the bricks?

Last week:  Followed my 20 week plan quite well.  Adapted as necessary.

This week:  On vacation in Florida.  Swim lessons at the Jungle Club in Vero Beach, Florida.  What a great club.  Lots of machines and space for everyone.   Plan a run on the beach and some cycling around the coast.  This sure beats shoveling snow!  I'm LOVING the warmer air down here.  Signed up to swim with the dolphins on Thursday.  Should be a good week!

Sounds like you are having fun! I will be at Disney the following weekend for my daughters competition at Wide World of Sports. Are you staying at Vero Beach Disney by chance? We are looking at going there for spring break.

Nice going! Consistency is the key. If you have the ipod Nano with the Nike+ you can setup a power song so you just press the center button for your "power" song! It helps when really feeling bad or just want a push. Good goal for the swim! You may find as your swimming workouts get longer and and 3x week that the weights might need to be scaled back or stopped. I always had a tough time recovering from weights and a full training load. Just keep that in mind if you start to really feel fatigued.

Thought about when to ditch a workout. When you are having a bad workout, how do you know when to suck it up and keep going and when to quit. I don't have an answer, but have some indicators to help with your decision. Sometimes it is mental and you need the break. Sometimes you need to overcome the mental part and push through. This takes experience. Is it a once in a while thing or is it regular 1+ times per week.

Ok, so far I haven't really said anything right :-) Well on my long run this morning, I felt very fatigued and no energy in the legs. I also did my Tues run after work instead in am so I knew legs might be a little tired. During this 3m I am talking to myself saying no way I can do the whole run. Mile 2 I try to pick up the pace to normal and it is a 1' slow and feels harder than it should. You see where I am going. At what point do I bag this run. Well, I had my HRM on. My HR is only upper zone 1 to lower zone 2. I  know I am not over trained or overly fatigued. If I was the HR would be way up. So I keep going. At the 4m point I run my normal pace and start feeling better. My last 7m were faster than ever and my overall time ended up being my fastest despite the slow start. However, if my HR had been up or legs started really hurting I would have stopped. Just another way to use your HRM as a tool.

It still takes experience to know when to bag one. I have had runs in the heat and partially dehydrated that I finished no matter what. I know what it took to recover from that and know to bag those kind of runs now.

LAST WEEK: Mostly on target with running but since my 7 miles got cut short on Sunday I didn't quite meet my goal.  Finished TI.  Oh yeah, put a few miles on the bike both inside and out... brrr (OK, not brr like where some of you live but brrrr for Atlanta!).

THIS WEEK: Today was the official post-op mark where I can start swimming again.  I got called into a meeting at work so was not able to get the swim in this morning, which was a little disappointing as I'd been looking forward to it, but hopefully will do so in the next couple of days.  Hope the purple on the graph doesn't blind me!!!  I'll continue ramping up running as consistently as possible.  Must get power yoga in this week and, you know, I might cycle a time or two .

Great point with the weight training, I've actually had a few days where my body feels wiped out (probably due to pushing to much). So once I'm consistently doing 2x swims a week I'll be looking at scaling back my weight training for sure. Thanks!

Have fun with the swimming! The running is coming along nicely, no sweat cutting one short. Now if you could only get some cycling in :-)

My daughter does the Twirlmania every year. It is a national event for baton twirling up through college age. It's actually much more involved than you would think. Also works well keeping her active since she is a girly-girl :-) Have fun with dolphins and let us know how it is.

Last Week: Recovery week was a good thing. So last week was not a recovery week. That's what the logs are for I guess. I missed my Sunday run That was something from the week prior too. but that's ok with me because I don't want to blow my knee up running too much. That's one of the main reasons I went with the bike focused plan. I'm hoping the extra biking will help with the run.

This Week: I hope to get all my workouts in. This is the second of 3 volume building weeks for this month. I think the biking is coming along. I have already biked 26 and 28 miles during my workouts. I've also swam the entire distance of the race. I think the volume that I add from here on out will only boost my confidence during the race.

Have a great week everyone!

Last week: A great full week of training, I hit all scheduled sessions except 1 run. My bikes were smooth, runs were ok timing, and I've found I love the breaststroke (can you do this in competiton?).

This week: A true recovery week, though I've started out far lighter on the workouts than anticipated. So from here on out I'll keep my distances up but times slower, get in more abs and some weights since I won't be pushing the cardio.

P.S. Somebody please send some warmth! I don't know how much longer I can take temps with HIGHS in the teens!

Last Week: Happy to be back in the water, hit all my run distances, oh, and I rode a bike inside... and outside... and up and down a mountain a few times

This Week: Had a rest day and survived.  It was not easy, mind you, particularly since the weather was amazing, but I needed it.  Trying to get more comfortable in the water.  I believe I might be overthinking it a little bit.  I'm so focused on form, which I know is important, but maybe I should just GO a little and feel it then worry about form.  Thoughts?

Last Week: My recover/lazy week came at the perfect time, as my schedule seemed jam packed in the evenings and energy was just a bit lower than normal. So when I did hit the gym, as you'll see in my logs, I was going for ease and fun.

This week: Back to the plan, I must get a few swims in (as I skipped out last week) and plan on speeding up my run times. For my biking sessions I'm using the great Award Show spinning workout from Mila (luckily I do have access to the clubs spining bikes for this)

I hope everyone has a succesful goal meeting week!

This Week: Trying to do the same thing.  I missed my run on Sunday but I knew I would do that.  I'm going to make that up today.

I'm supposed to go buy my bike this Saturday so I'm pretty pumped about that.  Also the weather is thurning around here so I might be able to get out of the bike shortly.  That will be sweet.

Have a good week everyone!

Good job with the training. The biking will help your run some. You are right to take it slow and be careful. We aren't racing for money and it is not worth an injury :-) Yes, volume will give you great confidence. I tend to shoot for long workouts in all disciplines to get to 150% of the race distance at least once. However, with me going to longer races this will of course not  happen :-) For my first Oly, I am over 150% because I have a longer race a month later.  So for an Oly, a confidence long workout would be 9m run, 40m bike and 2500y workouts. Not straight 2500y swims though :-) With the "over" volume you will go into the race knowing you can do this distance, just have to be careful not to blow yourself up!

You can do the breast stroke and have seen a couple people do it, but it tires you out more and it is slower. You also use your legs a lot more. Try to work on your free style. Think of free style os a sleek boat going through the water and breast stroke as a barge going through the water :-)

As of today we start getting some warmth finally. I can't imagine what you are training in up there though!

Outside??? Are you sure you didn't just have a computrainer in front of you :-) You can keep the mountains though!

You could do both. Do the beginning of your workout doing soe drills. Then do some regular swimming focusing on what the drill was focusing on. For example, if you do a drill to reach, then concentrate on reaching during your regular swim. For me, it is too hard to focus on more than two things while swimming.

Last Week: Well, got a sinus infection and a short vaccation so very little training. Then Fri got called into work in the morning instead of a relaxing morning with a brick workout!

This Week: Was still on vacation Mon, but got back to it this morning. Getting my energy back. Still some sinus pressure though. Warming up and looking forward to a long bike Sat. I need to focus on bike some more as races are coming up.

Last week - eased up a bit on my run mileage but did manage a some strength training. Had a 5k race Sat & went all out. I was really drained the rest of weekend.

This week - I have a bike, a beater but 2 wheels nonetheless, so I will get some miles in on the bike, continue my runs and get a couple days of strength days in also.

I'm still alive, just not actively blogging because of work project deadlines, but recording my workouts none the less.

LAST WEEK:  2 bricks, backed off on my swim time (1200 yds down to 600 yds for the week).  Long run on Saturday (14 miles in 11 F weather).

THIS WEEK: is almost over!  Hill work on the treadmill on Monday.  Did I mention I hate hillwork?...Did I mention I hate treadmills?  1200 yd swim today.  200 yd PR (3:46).  Tomorrow's a REST DAY, but I may run anyways just to catch up on February Challenge run miles.  Friday bumping the swim distance up to 1400 yds.  Saturday 14 mile run, but in MUCH nicer weather...

How'd you do?  I should check your blog.

A bike is a bike.  If it's heavy or the brakes rub, consider it resistance.  Just think of it as a kickbutt outdoor spinning class (right Mila?).  You will SO APPRECIATE a lighter bike down the road.  I have a road bike, aluminum, but is it worth $2700 to upgrade to a carbon fiber tri bike?  At my level, I think not.  Maybe in a year...
