79 | Subject: RE: Julia's Group - Full I miss working out too when I can't. I especially look forward to swimming! and the fact that I can run without getting totally wiped is cool. I'm so glad I joined the YMCA, i can work out at any Y depending where I am in the city or if I'm visiting my mom's, about an hour's drive out of town, i can workout at the local Y there too. I just noticed I can't review more than a week's worth of my training logs without being a member, I think I'll be joining soon. In a couple months it'll be nice to see how fitness level improved. |

I'm not a member either, some of the articles are of interest, but the ones I can read doesn't seem to give much meat to them. How does everyone else feel about being a member vs. not? |

Master 1873 Colorado | Subject: RE: Julia's Group - Full Click on the date on the calendar in your training log view and it will bring you back to that date and you can see what ever you want But I will tell you it is worth the $30 for the articles as well as downloading a training plan into your calendar. Unless you are hiring a coach or are ready to fully write your own training plan, these plans are GREAT!! I would highly suggest it |

Member 49 West Richland | Subject: RE: Julia's Group - Full Being able to import the training plan into my calendar is what really appeals to me about the membership, I'm currently using outlook for planning training but it would be really cool to do it all from BT. I'm still kind of waffling on joining myself, the addition of the route mapping stuff which is AWESOME got me thinking that I ought to give these guys some money to support the development of cool new features like that! I didn't do so great on my goal of not eating sweets after dinner last week, but I did well at getting to bed earlier. My goals this week are to get 8 hours of sleep and to eat at least 3 servings of vegetables a day. |

When would be the best time to buy new shoes before an event? my situation: I just bought new shoes, running shoe, and I usually need new ones about every 6 mths or so. I try not to wear my gym shoes for everyday wear, only workouts. But I do tend to use the same shoe for any workout: aerobics, treadmill or outdoor walks/runs. SO 6 months will be just about the day for my first sprint. What would you do get new shoes weeks before or hold out on the not so new/new ones? I know sorry, sometimes I talk to hear myself talk. |

I would say get another pair of new shoes a month before. If you aren't doing anything over a 5K, it really doesn't make that much difference as these days you don't need to necessary break in your shoes anymore. I tend to buy the same make and model because I know they work, but I change up my shoes much more often every 4 months or so. A month gives you some time to feel how they are and do some shorter runs before you do your big run, whatever that may be. You can still fall back on your older shoes if you want come race time. |

SO 6 months will be just about the day for my first sprint. What would you do get new shoes weeks before or hold out on the not so new/new ones? I know sorry, sometimes I talk to hear myself talk. I can definately tell you two mistakes that I have made 1- I bought new shoes a week before a triathlon, wore them for one training run and got BAD blisters so I had to use my old ones for the race -and I STILL had those blisters during the race to contend with - bloddy feet = BAD. 2- So I broke those shoes in so they no longer gave me blisters, BUT I still was weary of racing in them so I continued to use the oler tried and true (and worn out) ones for races. I wore them for a race in September and guess what!? I got NASTY shin splints on the run. SO I would say it is NOT a stupid question, but good for you for thinking in advance. I would buy a new pair a month or two before the event and start gradually working them into your main shoes. You just NEVER know GOOD PLANNING makes easier racing (and training ) Have you figured out yet that I'm an engineer... Sorry if I've been a little less responsive this week, I am CRAZY swamped at work with work and some personnel issues here... I can't WAIT for my vacation to Mexico!!! 10 days!! |

I will heed your advice for about a month ahead and break them in gradually. Thanks again for everything. |

Member 49 West Richland | Subject: RE: Julia's Group - Full Hmm, I always thought I went through shoes too quickly, glad to hear that a 4-6 month schedule is not unusual. Although that seems like too often given my running mileage. They just seem to get stretched out and I have to lace them tighter and tighter. Maybe I'm starting off with too big a size. On the topic of gear, if anyone is using crappy cheap swim goggles like I was, I highly recommend upgrading! I forgot mine at home the other day so I ended up buying a pair of Speedo Vanquishers at my gym's store, and it's a HUGE improvement. I don't have to tighten the strap so much just to get them to stay on, I don't have to pull them off to wipe off the fog every few laps, they don't leak when I push off too hard, and I can see in clear vivid detail just how disgusting the bottom of my gym's pool looks. Totally worth it! The lesson I've learned is that I should spend more money on gear. |

79 | Subject: RE: Julia's Group - Full Thanks! I didn't realize I could go back using the calendar to see your old logs. I use cheap goggles, I didn't know you could get ones that don't fog. Do you also wear a swim cap? I have bad gear for a lot of what I do. I found my bikes and I don't think either are that great, I wear a tank top and board shorts swimming, no cap, I only have good running shoes. I don't have much technical clothing besides my merino wool longjohns for biking or running outside. But I will treat myself to something...perhaps the goggles? Is there something you guys think is a must have? I have a HR monitor. Maybe I'll get workout clothing? or something for my bike, any suggestions? Edited by francisjade 2007-02-08 1:29 PM |

Member 36 | Subject: RE: Julia's Group - Full thanks for the info on goggles! i laugh because i use very cheapy goggles, they actually belong to one of my 4 year olds! ha ha! i just dig into the swimming bag and grab a pair and go. they actually work okay, as long as i seal them on real well initially. but i definitely have been thinking that i need a better pair that won't fog and that will fit my face better. my husband always says, "we're too poor to buy cheap things." its so true, once you skimp and try to save $$ on certain things (like sporting equipment) you usually have a problem of some kind and end up spending more in the long run replacing the CHEAP stuff! i do use a swim cap, but my hair is very long and if i don't have a cap i always, no matter how i try to tie it back, i still get whisps in my face/mouth/eyes and that is very distracting. i use one that is like swim suit material so its really soft on my head/skin and does the trick. i highly recommend it, if you have hair getting in you face. i personally don't really use if for hydrodynamics at this point... ha ha. i am suffering from some form of shin splints in my left leg. i ran the other day, but i'm not running again for a few more days, maybe not even until next week. i really can't afford injury at this point of my training, so i need to heal it. any suggestions besides ibu and staying away from running? thanks! megan |

Member 43 Shoreline | Subject: RE: Julia's Group - Full I just had my good goggles snagged. I left them in the locker room and someone decided they were cool enough to keep. Quality-wise they were awesome, but they were red tinted, which I was not that fond of. So now I am back to my old standbye's which I have had for more than 6 years. I also have to use a swim cap. I have long hair that flops around and gets in my eyes. Very annoying. I have a question regarding bike training. I only have a mountain bike, and so far have only been training on the stationary bike at the gym. I am taking a spin class this Friday to see if that is more interesting. What are the logical next steps for bike training....get out on the road on my mountain bike, or go ahead and get a tri-bike...or incorporate more spin classes???? |

72 | Subject: RE: Julia's Group - Full Meagan Who makes the swim cap you use? Everyone has helped me out today, as I don't have goggles and just this morning I was looking at them at the gym pondering the thought of getting some. I know now to get some, and not to skimp. I had to chuckle at the thought of using the 4 yrs olds, cause the thought crossed my mind before I bought a pair I would scavage through the kids' stuff. |

Member 36 | Subject: RE: Julia's Group - Full the swim cap i have is made by speedo. it is a nylon/lycra blend. of course, doesn't keep the hair dry at all, but its like swimsuit material and doesn't hurt my head at all or pull my hair. my friend got it for me at a sporting goods store. yes, i think its wise to invest in some good goggles. i'm anxious to get some. i sure get the third degree from the kids when they catch me with theirs. but, i've done 2 triathlons and all my swim training with them, so they have served great purpose! megan |

Have you had your run analyzed and fitted into a good pair of shoes made for you? I'm not talking some high school kid from Foot Locker. It is worth the time. Second, ice, ice, ice. You can try doing some more preventive stretching through walking on your heels like the length of a basketball court, then on your toes. Stretch your calves against the wall....and ice, ice, ice. Rest isn't a bad idea either...choose softer surfaces to run like asphalt over cement sidewalks, treadmill that has give, grass if you live in a warm place. Make sure you aren't running on the part of the road that slopes.....take time to take care of yourself or you will be sitting like a duck like me....I hate it! I'm so frustrated. Hope that helps. |

There is nothing wrong with using your mountain bike for riding, although a road bike is nicer. I did my first tri on a mountain bike...it served its purpose. Unless you are really serious about tri's I wouldn't buy the tri bike, get the road bike that is more functional and you can always add the tribars on if you want. You'll drop some pretty pennies on a tri bike. Spinning definately helps on the motivation, strength and at times even form. You can practice transitions and really just get time in the seat. My thoughts. |

Member 128 Grafton, WI | Subject: RE: Julia's Group - Full So I made it through another P.T. session without jumping off the table. I have bruises up my leg from all the pressure, but I do think it is helping that is if I hadn't had the set back from my double spin class this week. So now I decided to lay off everything for a week besides swimming on Sat to totally let my body try to recover. Oh yeah, and yoga and vball on Sunday. I'm going out of my mind with not being able to run, and now spin.....it is really tough once you get into the habit and because I don't have that outlet. But, I can hardly walk....so I have to sloooowwww down so that I have any chance at making the HIM in June. So I am focusing on the Trigroup I am starting in my area....that should help. Tonight he tried a tapejob on my ankle...hopefully that will help with my biomechanics and allow me to adjust. It just sucks knowing I'll have to start over. Hope everyone else has more luck! |

Hope that helps. my shoes are only about 6 months old. a doctor that my husband works with recommended them to me because my feet pronate and these shoes are supposed to keep the feet at a better angle. i haven't had shin splints for EVER, and i actually think it all started when i ran on the treadmill last thursday. I ALWAYS get pain after the treadmill, usually in my hips and knees. so this didnd't suprise me. i feel like there is NO real give to the treadmill, i find it much more jarring than the street. anyway, i will ice it, thats a good suggestion. i know, i HATE not being able to do my workouts, and i'm not nearly in the situation you are. monday i watched my friend's 2 kids, so i didn't work out, then tuesday my leg was killing. by tuesday night my husband even noticed that i was acting depressed and grumpy! it really affects me when i'm not in "my groove." trYgrl, what HIM are you doing? i'm doing on in June also. i'm getting so excited for it. megan |

Member 128 Grafton, WI | Subject: RE: Julia's Group - Full Plan is to do High Cliff in Sherwood WI. The first mile is uphill for the bike and run....straight up hill, seriously....you don't even have time to get your legs back from biking before you run up the hill. Then the run is mostly trail running. I'm really excited, but thinking if I don't get this thing under control by March, I'll have to postpone....the thought depresses me. You might want to think about getting new shoes if you have had them for 6 months. They say 4-6 months depending on how much you use them. It could also be the treadmill. |

I would say get outside on the MT bike, but if you are considering buying a bike, I would look at road bikes that you can put aerobars on. I wouldn't go right for the tri bike. They are great for racing, but not training, where a road bike you can train with and put aero's on for some training and for racing. I used my road bike in all of my races last year until the last race, when I bought the tri bike. The most important thing with a bike is the fit. You might be able to get a good deal on one of last years bikes if you can find a good fit out there. There are LOTS of articles on bikes, lots of magazines, but if you have questions, Ill try to answer the best I can. Also, look at components on the bike!

Master 1873 Colorado | Subject: RE: Julia's Group - Full Diane&Mike - 2007-02-08 2:17 PM Meagan Who makes the swim cap you use? Everyone has helped me out today, as I don't have goggles and just this morning I was looking at them at the gym pondering the thought of getting some. I know now to get some, and not to skimp. I had to chuckle at the thought of using the 4 yrs olds, cause the thought crossed my mind before I bought a pair I would scavage through the kids' stuff. I also have the Vanquishers and LOVE them. TYR also makes some great goggles, with 3 different nose bridges so you make sure you get a good fit. A note about swim caps. There are 3 basic types. The stretchy, sticky, latex caps, which are VERY cheap (you can get them for $1.50, but they will not last all that long and most likely, you will get one at any race you for free ) then there is the cloth type, which is OK for the pool, most people think they are more comfortable, but they cause a LOT of drag, especially if you have long hair. Then there is the neporene cap - it looks and functions a lot like a latex cap, but it doesn't get sticky and thin and they don't rip easily. They cost between $10-$15. Mine has lasted about a YEAR before I ripped it - then I still kept wearing it for another month! I would go that route! |

All GREAT advice. Also, htere are some strength things you can do. This sounds silly but I've heard it really works. Sit in a chair with your leg mostly extended - or on your back on the floor. Draw the alphabet with each foot using your ANKLE. In other words, try to keep you knee and shin still and use your ankle to draw the letters of the alphabet. It stretches and strengthens your shins |

(need to make up for last week:p) Made it out to the race route today and did the bike portion - it was so nice. Very excited to get out there again, and not usually a bike person. Hubby and I have to put in the alot this weekend cause the following week son has wrestling tournaments both sat and sun will cut into any training time. Well we will have to worry about that when it comes. How does everyone/anyone deal with training if you have to be away basically all day? (Especially when you have to be a spectator.) |

Well we will have to worry about that when it comes. How does everyone/anyone deal with training if you have to be away basically all day? (Especially when you have to be a spectator.) Hi Diane, When away all day or travelling I go on jogging "tours" of the city, I study the map and circle places I want to run by. Perhaps you could carry a change of clothes and bring your running shoes and run in the neighbourhood you're in. Squeeze in a run first thing or on a break? How fun! Running in new places is fun. Maybe find a gym and pay for the day and sneak in a swim. Perhaps the tournament will be held in a facility with a pool. If you throw everything you'd need for a run or swim in your car you'll be prepared. I fell short too on my goals. I think I have to start with baby steps and just start with one goal. I have to work on my diet since I'm allergic to something that's making my skin terrible and making me tired. Starting an elimination diet this week. So you were able to try the actual route you'll go on during your race? Is that normally done? I'm hoping to do my first tri in June and if I knew the bike route beforehand I'd love to run through it. That's great! Have fun attaining your new goals this week!!!!! |
