Regular 109 Rehab with Brittney | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin Well, I decided on the Quintana Roo. I didn't like the fit a whole lot on the Specialized and the color didn't do a whole lot for me anyway. I guess with the extra money I'll invest in some nicer wheels. On another note, I tried to ride my bike this weekend and it was windy!!! I only made it out about 10 minutes and decided this was too stupid so I headed back in (I was having a hard time staying upright due to the wind). I feel like I'm really getting behind on my riding because I haven't been able to get out enough on the road (most of my time has been on the trainer). |

Hockey players are typically good golfers right?? Do you beat your dad? Good luck with your resolutions, getting them well defined is the biggest step. |

Member 27 | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin I have two goals for 2008. Lose 50 lbs and beat my personal best time in Sept. The best way I know I can lose weight is by running and getting to the point where I am running 20+ miles a week. But to do that I will not be able to focus as much on the bike and swim. Any one have any ideas on how to find a balance? I do not seem to get as good of a workout with the bike and swim. |

Expert 878 Carmel | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin You have to remember that running is very taxing on the body, esp if you are not an efficient runner. It is not hard to find balance and still keep your run your main focus. Your body can adapt to almost anything but you have to give it time. Your swim and bike should be seen as almost active recovery days if running is your focus. By swimming and biking you are using the muscles in the body in different ways and even though you dont feel like you are getting a great workout, your body is getting the benefits. Running is the easiest and most convenient but you need the other sports, if for nothing else to kill the monotony. Edit- Also add in some circuit training. A trainer buddy of mine told me that if you have a goal to lose a significant amount of weight, add in circuit training. You will be losing some much of a % of body weight that you want to try and maintain some strength. The example he used was an apple, saying that if you just do cardio to lose the weight, you will still have the same shape and you will look like a dehydrated apple. You dont want that, you just want to be a smaller apple. Edited by MForger18 2008-01-10 7:52 AM |

We had a great time watching the Packer game and are keeping our fingers crossed that we get home field advantage next week. I had a couple of bike questions for you, does leg length have any affect on cadence? what things affect it? what is the advantage of a compact crank set and why would I want one or ever need one? Member 141 Australia | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin Hi all!! I haven't been around much = been super busy. But just wanted to say that I did my first official race yesterday!! Here are my results: 12:58:00 500m swim 48:47:00 20km bike (was actually almost 22km) 29:11:00 5km run 90:56:00 Total. I am happy with that. I know I can do better with more training, and that's what I plan. But considering I gave birth 5 months ago I am pretty happy. I'll try to do a race report at some stage. I did the whole cycle in the same gear because my bike is one of the old style with the gears down the middle and I was too scared! But I went for a 36km ride today & taught myself to change gears! LOL. So that probably would have helped a bit... Am super busy with work at the moment, but will try to keep up in here! |

We really wanted the Giants so we could get home field advantage and not have to face the curse of Brett not winning in Cowboy territory. Now that you don't have the "boys" to root for maybe you can muster up the energy to root for the Packers. You gotta love any team that is willing to play in zero degrees which is what they are calling for on Sunday! |

Regular 109 Rehab with Brittney | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin Yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing Brett win won more ring before he retires. He's been playing lights out so far, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Pack wins it all this year. |

Hey sorry it took so long to get on here. Leg length will have little to no effect on cadence, as long as the bike is set up properly for you. What I mean by that is if you are 5' and riding a bike with 180 cranks you will be slower, and the same goes for short cranks and a really tall person. The main thing that effects it it is where you can hold your cadence over a set distance. Personally my cadence is a bit slower than some but I tend to mash the pedals a bit. Not great for tris but it keeps my HR in check. Compact cranks are good for hilly races or if you just want easier gearing combos. The teeth on the frnt chainrings are usually 50x34 where a standard is 53x39. You should spin faster with compacts but they are not always necessary. Some people get used to using a compact when they really dont need it. An old coach/friend of mine told me that unless you are climbing mountains, just ride your bike with standard and get strong enough where you are not having trouble climbing. Hes also a CAT 1 rider but hey, he must know something. I thought about using compacts for IMLP, but ended up just using a 12x27 rear casssette and I think that gave me plenty of gearing combos. |

Regular 109 Rehab with Brittney | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin Hi Matt, I have another bike set-up question. I was hearing a noise coming from my front derailleur. I noticed that the chain was rubbing against the derailleur, so I hadn't entirely shifted out of the big ring. It turns out that my front shifter doesn't actually "click" when shifting from big to small ring, but instead just works as a lever, meaning I can adjust the angle of the derailleur, without actually shifting gears. Is this normal? On my road bike, its either big or small ring and no in between, I didn't know if the setup was different because of the tri configuration or not. I'm sure I have explained that very well, but if you have any advice that would be great. Thanks, paul |

Thanks Bert. Transitions weren't too bad. The times are combined into the bike & run times. My first wasn't great. Had trouble getting my shoes on. Just nerves I think. I still just wear my runners on the bike, so at least I only had one time putting on my shoes. My actual bike time was more like 45 mins - so almost 3 min transition!! That's not very good! But T@ was simple. Take off helmet & have a sip of water.... |

I have to adjust the front derailleur a bit based on what gear I am in at the rear. I remember reading once that you should not combine every front gear with every rear gear...does anyone know what the recommended rules for shifting are? |

Expert 878 Carmel | Subject: RE: MForger18's Group- Closed- Find your seats bc the shows about to begin You guys are right. I was told that you should avoid the smallest rings together and the biggest. Try to stay in the middle and only max out to the opposite cog size with the big and small chainrings. Is that confusing?? As far as the front derailleur and shifter on a tri bke, it does use tension. On my old bike I used to have to really push it hard so it wouldnt rub when I was in the biggest cog but for the most part its ok. You may want your mechanic to check the throw and make sure that you are set right. Ive had it happen even on bikes that were just tuned if I was running a 12x27 rear cassette. Dont stress too much unless it is really bad. |
