Many of you know that I'm a news photographer in Phoenix, AZ. I thought I would post some links to some stories that I've worked on. The story on the cloistered nuns was a the story that I won my 1st Emmy Award for.

A story that we did a couple of months ago on a guy who scammed people out of about $100,000.

Catholic School Story

The nun's story.

Nuns Pt 1 I guess these aren't working anymore. Sorry.

Nuns Pt 2

Wow, grats on the Emmy, that is a major achievement.  I don't even think Ron Burgundy won one of those!

Good luck on the race this weekend.

Would it be wrong if I brought it with me at the race? Actually it just sits on a sofa table in our living room. I think finishing an Ironman would be a bigger achievement though.

If I had an Emmy, I'd take it everywhere.  Group Rides, Burger King, the Barber Shop...if anyone ever gives you a hard time about anything just pull out the Emmy and ask if there's a smudge on it.

I'd also have to disagree with you on whats a bigger achievement; an Emmy is a big deal and you have to work for it.  You're putting in hours working for someone else and alot of times doing things you don't enjoy.  Such as working late when you have prior commitments.  The path of Ironman is tough but purely optional and enjoying; the training is tough but hopefully you are doing it because you enjoy the sport and competition.

If its one pet peeve I have about this sport is when people refer to triathlon training as a sacrifice, work, or unenjoyable... I (and I'm sure everyone here) do this because I enjoy the training maybe more than the racing.  Anyway I'll get off my soapbox before you ask me if there's a smudge on your Emmy.

Lately I feel like I can train without worrying about reinjuring something, and its the first time I've felt that way in almost a year;  it feels pretty damn good.

Learn from my mistakes... DON'T let that feeling have too loud of a voice and go out and start training too hard.  Stick to the [hopefully conservative] plan, and allow that good feeling to let you train consistently.  It would be all to easy to start killing it because you feel great and then be right back in a place where you are walking the line between training stress/recovery and injury.

Even in IM training, I think you should usually feel the way you are feeling right now.  Maybe after a super long bike ride or mediumish-long run (which is as long as I plan to run during IM training) it might be okay to be a bit sore/fatigued for a day or two afterwards... but I think day after day you should generally feel like you could do again what you just finished doing.

Just my two cents.

I have thought about that and definately will have to keep it in mind.  I have done that before, and my new training schedule is pretty conservative.  I'd rahter put in 30 straight mediocre training weeks than 6 tough weeks and another 6 weeks healing.

I have had 5 nominations and only one win. I have great understanding on awards shows when they show the person winning and then they cut away to the nominees who didn't win and they have perma grin on their faces. I'm that guy. I won the Emmy a couple of years ago but I will say that it was one of the most exciting nights of my life.

Just a note. These Emmy's are like the one's they talk about during the primetime Emmy awards when they say "Last weekend we gave out the Science and Technical awards". I wasn't on NBC or anything.

Enough of this, who is ready to race this weekend? (raises his hand)

PennState - 2010-05-14 6:20 AM Morning! What are the weekend training plans? I'm working a fair amount so training will be minimalist.

Looking at some treadmill running this morning.  I am going to try the group ride at the LBS tomorrow, plus some additional mileage on my own.  Looking to get some where around 50 miles.   Then a 13 - 14 mile run on Sunday.  I should probably swim some time too !

Have a good weekend!!

PennState - 2010-05-14 6:35 AM BTW there are increasingly more threads in the tri talk forum about barefoot and VFF running. Has anyone tried it or is thinking of trying it? I have not tried it and probably won't ever, but that's just for me. What say the group?

I have a friend (on BT) that I bike with a lot who is trying it with some success.  He has had injury problems and tried it looking to get past the injuries.  Knock on wood, I have been fortunate with the injuries so I haven't really had any motivation to try it.  But, if it gets someone running that otherwise would struggle, I say give it a try!

I'm departing for a 92 mile hilly ride in a few minutes... gulp!

After that I've got a medium run + swim tomorrow, and then a medium bike on Sunday.

I will be wearing shoes for all of those sessions, except the swim.

Heading out tonight on the red eye to NY - hoping to get a run in this weekend in between the graduation festivities, something like 7-8 miles. We'll see if it works out, time with my family is the #1 priority this weekend.
