Holy cow, that 75 min run with 7 pick ups every 5 minutes nearly killed and then to do 20 x 75s with efforts nearly killed me. This has been toughest, but most rewarding, week so far. Just hope that this tendonitis in my foot calms down a bit. Edited by JoePetto 2011-03-05 6:04 AM |

That's about 1:39 average. Progress still being made! I've started experimenting with the hip driving the stroke during my stroke drills and am starting to feel the benefit. That, along with getting in the unconscious habit of finishing my pull with a quick glance of the thigh, and my times are improving. Still bilateral breathing. No flip turns. OW swims have walls every 25 yards or so to grab and take a breath.....right? |

New user 82![]() ![]() ![]() Gallatin, TN | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan GroupWeek 10 and just completed the 2.5 hour ride - 43.5 miles! Some hills around here in middle TN! I felt really strong and even had the sense I could run a bit afterwards. It is really interesting in these focus weeks to se the improvement in my endurance! My HIM race is May 7 (Gulf Coast Tri), and I am starting to think I might actually survive it. Started this journey a little over 3 years ago and I am 51yo. Who would've thought? Best tip I have is to practice transition and ask lots of questions. |

Pro 6520![]() ![]() ![]() Bellingham, WA | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan GroupFinishing up week 14 this weekend. I've had to make some major revisions in the plan to prevent injury. Have substituted frequency for duration and tomorrow will be 50 days in a row. It has actually worked out very well for me. I have a recovery week coming up so I'm going way out on a limb and running a half marathon with my daughter tomorrow. If it costs me a bit on the plan, so be it. I know I'll remember and cherish the time we spend together much more than a few ticks on the clock from my HIM. Also, if I can pull it off and have a decent race (defined as no injuries) it will be a huge confidence boost with the HIM still three months away. I'm already getting a few butterflies. |

Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan GroupGreat work everyone. Sounds like your getting in some terrific workouts. Pops, have a blast with your daughter. I forced myself through a nasty ride fighting the elements today. Strong winds and rain for the last 45 min but at least I didn't quit. I used all my energy just to keep my bike from blowing over today! |

My build up has been very cautious so my long run to date is 10k. I feel like I've gained a lot of durability through consistency so I'm optimistic. Good luck on your marathon this weekend. |

I did back flips yesterday over a 1:44 in my TT (and was absolutely gassed at the end)... Any tips you're willing to share on good stroke drills or web sites/books you're using? Anything to improve efficiency/speed. Distance has neve been a problem but I'm consistently a 2:00/100 swimmer when I'm not sprinting. I'm one of those "I'll catch you on the run" people...

Expert 945![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() , Michigan | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan GroupAt 1:44, it won't take you long to catch me on the run :-) I guess I've noticed a steady progression with my swimming with the following improvements: 1. Proper breathing - head low, turn with hips, breath into pocket of air 2. Proper hip rotation - started thinking consciously about the hips powering the stroke 3. Finish the stroke - pull all the way back until I touch my thigh 4. Avoid crossover - both at recovery and pull portion of the stroke I've also just spent more time in the water. Core and balance are strenghtening, improving my position. |

Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan GroupI am starting my 6th week of the plan today and I already notice nutrition is a problem. I can make it through the workouts but I suffer later. I had two days last week that I wasn't prepared, life got in the way, I didn't eat when I should have and I ended up crashing. If it is a day with a double workout it really makes things difficult. So, this week I am trying to really think things through and be prepared. What do you like for recovery after a longer workout? Do you keep things in the car? |

Since it is still cool enough here in the east coast, I keep containers of soy chocolate milk (the kind that doesn't need to be refrigerated) in the car along with high quality cereal bars. Bananas and apples ale always winners and travel well. I find it is key to eat within the first 30 mins after a strong workout and I've read reports which say that the first 10 mins is even more important.

I was suppose to do an hour and a half on the trainer this morning, but cut it short at 1hr 18min and did some adjusting on my seat and handle bars. It feels really off, not sure how that happened. I haven't touched since the fall. I was pretty excited to get my new wetsuit in the mail, until I tried it on. How tight does it have to be??

Congrats on week 20. Enjoy the journey. Does your suit feel tight all over or just in specific areas? |

Do you keep things in the car? I look at nutrition in two ways. First is my normal diet and second is fueling for training. My diet is not ideal but I am improving. I try to keep it as balanced as possible. I try to keep in mind what I take in prior to a long workout and will focus on fueling (primarily gel) & hydration during that workout, not only to sustain my effort but to come out of it not feeling as depleted. My recovery after a long workout is usually cold beer while soaking in my hot tub that overlooks an amazing view. Not ideal in many aspects but is something I enjoy immensely and really look forward to. |

Pro 6520![]() ![]() ![]() Bellingham, WA | Subject: RE: Beginner 1/2 Ironman Plan GroupMy HM went as well as could be expected after longest training run to date was 6.2 miles. I finished in a time equal to my HIM run split goal so with three months to go its a huge confidence boost. My daughter stayed with me until mile 10 but could not stand being passed by other people so I cut her loose and she finished a few minutes ahead. The training has really paid off. I actually had strength in my legs until the last few miles. I am so thankful as last year this time I was in the midst of pretty intense chemotherapy. My situation is a very tangible result of much prayer. |
