wgraves7582 - 2010-10-28 8:19 AM Nekkid - there are some that can shut down the thinky (me) and some that cannot (you???)

It is really a gift.  You just shut the mind down and stop.  There is no simple trick to do it - it just happens!

I laughed at myself today when I thought (rare) to myself what you tell someone who asked what you think about on your 1 or 1.5 hour bike commute - NOTHING

Things come and go but nothing that important most of the time!

I have shut it off when I'm on my bike, or out on a long run. It just seems the runs have to be longer and longer now for me to shut it off.

When I get back to running in November, I'm just going to run. I'm not going with a watch, or my garmin. I don't care about distance or pace. I just want to run.

I want to have fun. I keep thinking though, what if I don't beat the bridge?

You have to maintain a 14min/mil pace for the first 20 miles to do that. I know I can do that. I don't know why it's nagging at me. I think I'm thinking too much.

How do you turn off the thinky?

If you find out how to turn it off, let me know. My guess would be to start thinking. I CAN DO THIS rather than, WHAT IF I CANT!

My body can run a marathon. I've spent the past couple of days trying to convince my brain. I think I finally got to that point last night.

What is this beat the bridge?

They open the one bridge at a certain time. So you have to be past that point or they toss you on a bus and drive you to the finish line. I DO NOT WANT TO RIDE A BUS TO THE FINISH LINE!

From the website

MCM Gauntlet:  Runners must maintain 14 minute per mile pace to pass the MCM Gauntlet at mile 17.5 at the intersection of 14th Street and Madison Drive NW.  A tail-end vehicle will be in place to easily identify the necessary pace.  Runners slower than the required pace will be detoured for safety reasons but will quickly rejoin the marathon course.  These participants may continue to run the course but will not complete an official marathon.  It is requested any runners rerouted at the Gauntlet not accept a finisher medal.

Beat the Bridge:
Runners must maintain the 14 minute per mile pace to reach the 14th Street Bridge and successfully "Beat the Bridge" just after mile marker 20.  The 14th Street Bridge will reopen to vehicular traffic making it unavailable to runners after 1:15 p.m.  Any runners unable to "Beat the Bridge" will be required to board the straggler buses and be driven to the event finish area.

Ahh - what is your typical pace?

For my long runs my first 2-4 miles have been at about a 12 minute mile. Once I get warmed up I'm at about a 10 minute mile.

My shorter runs I've been able to do to 3 miles of a 5 mile run at 8:12-8:19.

This winter I want to work on getting stronger and faster.

I hope Kendra's day is WAY better than yesterday.

Being threatened by a kid at the library. I mean, it's not like she is hanging out in an alley in gang territory!
Hope the little chit isn't vindictive.

I'm listening to Pandora Radio right now, and I thought I was just lip syncing the song. I may have actually been singing outloud a little.

Good thing I don't care what anyone here thinks about me.

Well, even if there is a shooting at the race the odds work in our favor. LOTS of runners. Can also book this as motivation at the end. Do not be that slow straggler that is easy to sight.

On a serious note, am wondering if this will delay the start at all or if it means we need to get there even earlier. Guess we'll find out when we pick up our race packets.

I'm not really worried about it. I'm pretty sure security is tight for this thing. Just because you don't see the security personnel it doesn't mean they aren't around.

We'll have to figure out Saturday afternoon what time we're getting up on Sunday, and what time we're heading to the starting line.

I do that too often with my Ipod. I am glad I can cause folks to laugh. It is when they are rolling on the floor gasping that I get a little miffed!
