I was just glancing over my logs, and noticed after March 1st, the 60th day of 2011 (31 in Jan, 28 in Feb, 1 in Mar), I had just logged over 100 hours (100 hours and 3 minutes) of S/B/R training/racing.

bergstrom.mike - 2011-03-02 6:03 AM be sure ( as sure as you can ) that you tighten all the little bolt things as close to the same as you can.  It will help a bit.  These covers make noise, but not really the same noise as a true disc does.

yeah...no whooshing noise like a real disc.  But that's the first thing I checked...that all the screws were tightened.  I found that using two nickels was 10x easier than using two screw drivers.

you have two nickles?  I need to sell the wife and kids! :-

Happy to report that my average watts went up to 284 for our time trial yesterday . Which brings me to about 3.3 watts/kg. Pretty happy with that as of right now. Unfortunately the guy that wins every week also went up to 4.2. That's some serious wattage.

your logs are crazy rediculous, why are you not doing IM? I mean why are you not doing an ultraman?

chasingkona - 2011-03-02 10:32 PM Alright Newbz question on the running, the rest of you runners feel free to chime in. Tomorrow I have a 6 mile tempo run planned. It calls for a 1.5 mile warmup to tempo pace (7:35 per mile) cruise at 7:35 for 3 miles and then a 1.5 mile cooldown. Instead I was thinking f running the tempo portion all out and finding my time for 5K as a benchmark to test off for the year. Is this an alright idea to measure my 5k time for now? or should i do it without the warmup and cooldown?

From what I've read about 5k testing (and it's a good thing to do - in fact I was thinking about doing one in the next 10 days as well) is you should have an adequate warm up (2-3 mi) with some short intense efforts in there to fire up the system, so to speak.  Then do your 5k test, and try to hold on as long as you can.  Then a 2-3 mile cool down.

I think it's a great thing to do, and it changes up the training some.

agreed for the most part. my fastest days tend to be some of my longest overall simply due to the much longer warm up/cool down, etc.

As to whether or not it's a smart idea, that is a dif question, and at this point one only you can really answer. Will running hard enough to get an accurate 5k time (like wanting to throw your lunch on the your feet), impact training later in the week? if the answer is more than a workout, i'd skip it, do the tempo, and keep going. You'll get a pretty accurate idea of where the 5k stands through some of those faster runs anyway.

Now if you dont have anything hard coming up, go for it.

So I took in what you guys said and decided doing a 5k TT would go well since I have nothing big coming up and I wanted to get a gauge to where I stand. I ended up only doing 2.33 miles as I went out too hard and mentally was not in it today. Splits by pace were 6:50/7:10/7:23 so its safe to say that I was falling off pace a bit. Gonna use this as a speed session and come back and try again in a couple weeks to pace better and get a full result.

Got my 20 minute FTP test done today.  I thought I was going to die.  Then I thought I would quit at 3 minutes, then 7 minutes.  Somehow made it through holding 262 watts...which puts my estimated FTP at 249.  I swear I was seeing stars when I finished.

The only other time I did the test was last June when I first got my powertap.  I did that test on my road bike (on the hoods), holding 248 watts for an estimated FTP of 235.  But this test I did completely on the aero bars of my TT bike.  So a pretty big improvement for me all things considered.

Not to mention I'm 5 pounds lighter than I was last June, so my overall watts/kg has gone up from 3.21 to 3.49.

very nice.

What test did you use?
Did you just do the 20min and then estimate, the 5 and 20min, or 20 min and a shorter one another day to plot?

Got it.
That's a NASTY distance to test!

And i'm not sure if the deleted post was directed back at my comment but if it was i wanted to say i was jsut teasing about you even being able ot have tan lines right now, nothing personal meant.

I know you were teasing.

It was just ironic that for some reason none of my posts were showing up.  I would type something, click submit, and nothing would come out.  Try to edit it...same thing...LOL.  It was happening in other threads as well.  Might be the PC I was using at the time.

40 degrees outside, snow is melting, life is good!...lol. Got in an easy 4 miles at 8:36 pace and tried to keep my HR as low as possible. Average was 147, so it seems that my HR is starting to creep lower and lower on easy runs.

I may have mentioned this previously, but I really hate wind. Especially a headwind. Even more: a headwind that turns into a cross-wind. Worse than that: sudden gusts that threaten to blow me into traffic. Not that there's a lot of traffic in a town of less than 3000, but still!

I still managed to get just-shy of 20 miles in. The 18mph wind wasn't bad, it's the 30+ mph gusts that were a pain. Under other circumstances I'd be mildly disappointed with my stats on this ride, but as it stands I'll take it.

I need to get a power meter. I know I was pushing like mad into the wind, but I don't know what my actual effort was beyond "oh please make it stop".

Hahaha the wind SUCKS!
It's been crazy windy hear, has been playing havoc with crew practices.

I've got my season opener tomorrow morning. Time to see how the last 5 months of running have come along. super hilly 7.1 mile trail race. Winning pace the last two years (fastest two times for the race) were 7:33 two years ago (no snow), and 8:25 (snow).
Should be a fun time. forecasted 45 degrees and raining. MUDDD!!!!!

Does anyone/has anyone ever used compression socks, or the straussbourg sock? I am curious to hear about peoples experiences with these. I have always been against wearing compression socks but I am trying to open my eyes some this year and see if those silly socks do benefit in anyway recovery after long hard efforts running. That being said I am sure Jason you don't wear them as they would kill your tan lines year round!

Subject: RE: Newbz' Spring Fling Mentor Group is FULL!

Got in a fairly easy 47 mile ride.  Took some short turns pulling up front, but at a moderate effort.  The group was small today, and the roads were a bit wet, so no reason for anyone to hammer.

10 mile TT tomorrow.  Legs feel good and no real fatigue from Thursday's 20 minute test.  I figure I might try to hold about 260 watts the first half, then see what I got left after the turnaround.  I think I could probably hold 265 watts the whole way, but I want to finish strong.

Just finished packing everything up.  Good lord...it took me almost 2 hours to get everything straight...just for a 10 mile race that will last under 30 minutes.  Had to throw on the disc cover, changed out to latex tubes (which I might add are pretty darn cool), set up a spare rear wheel with the trainer tire, pack the trainer, stripped the bike down (cages, bento box, rear wing), packed extra tools just in case, aero helmet, crack pipe, OH...forgot about the sticker to cover the valve hole...dammit.

Here's what I'll be racing on tomorrow.  Nothing else on the bike besides my computer (not pictured).  1 spare tube, lever, C02 will be in my back jersey pocket.
