Fred Doucette - 2011-02-10 5:43 PM Busy day for me at work with a run and bike mixed in.

I am currently debating whether or not to buy Training Peaks WKO+ for power analysis.

Otherwise I have a short swim on tomorrow. Longer (1:40) ride on Sat and long run on Sun.

If you like the stuff Dr. Skiba teaches in his book, give Raceday a try.  It's pretty interesting and can track the training load/power/intensities, etc across all three sports.  It's a free trial (like WKO I believe).

I did some swim testing today.  In week 6 of the Finding Freestyle program they have you do a 300 all out to see where you are.  I did not test at the beginning of the program but did a 300 about three weeks ago to get an idea (4:45).  Todays workout was about 1600 yards of drill/swim before the TT.  Finished at 4:27 for 300 scy (1:29/100).  Thats 16 seconds faster than my 300 a few weeks ago.  I suspect it is a PR but I dont really keep up with my 300 times.  I figured I would come in somewhere between 4:30 and 4:45.  I'm pleased but was whipped when I finished.  Not sure how this will calculate out to longer race distances but hey its an improvement.  I took my HR immediately upon finishing and it was at 180-usually when doing easy laps I am at 120.  Glad I finished at the shallow end.

Randy

Nice job sir!

x2.  I've found that 1:30/100 to be a tough threshold for me to beat.  Congrats!

Fred Doucette - 2011-02-10 7:29 AM Joe, I think the effort was not paced evenly enough. Ie; your last portion was so much stronger than the start. My understanding is that you should be gradually rising near the end. Good job either way.

Yeah, figured that.  I've heard you should steadily increase, but never knew to what extent...clearly I overcompensated staying easy in the beginning.  It's ok - I always add a few watts to my tested FTP to get my "training" FTP to account for test slackerness/imperfectness.

Joe-I was actually looking at the Race Day software today and am going to do the free trial.  I like the idea of training stress score across all 3 disciplines.  I have Skiba's training with power book and have read his thoughts on training stress.  Do you use the Race Day software?  If so, what are positives/negatives... etc.

Randy

P.S.-Nevermind Joe. Just saw your post answering my questions above in the general forum.  Thanks

Rode 3 hours outside today....2600' of climbing over first 16 miles.

Weather was much like IMFL..windy and cool

Beautiful scenery once out of Vegas...quite a contrast to the strip

Very fun but I do need to get my power/weight ratio up as the 5-8% hills were very hard.

tasr - 2011-02-10 11:36 AM Nice to see everybody testing out.  I can seem to find the time and pull myself away from my training for a few days to recovery enough for a full test.  I never really did a lot of structured testing.  I do test myself but in my own way of just pushing myself.  Go’s to show how different we all are.

I have to hand it to Fred.  He did that 20 min FTP test coming off one of his biggest week of training.   Great job!

The most I've ever "tapered" for a test (haha, all 3 of them...) is to not run hard the day before (either long or hard run, regular runs are fine) or bike.  I'll do whatever swimming the day before.  The day of I'll do the bike before any other scheduled workouts.  I broke my own rule by doing a run with vo2max intervals last night and planning my 3 min test today (I think the 3 min test is much less affected by it than the 20 min would be).  Regardless, I have a "fudge factor" in my numbers - my training FTP (i.e. the number I put in my Garmin which it shows %FTP based off of) is always higher than my tested FTP to account for fatigue and poor test execution.  Since each set of tests are probably similar in fatigue load and execution, I think they compare well to each other to track improvement.  For instance, in my previous 20 min test, I think I sandbagged it, so I added 3 watts to my FTP and 5 watts to my 20 min power (which some workouts used as a baseline)...those numbers were somewhat of an educated estimate, not just pulled out of thin air.

Hope everyone is well! I had a busy week and am now catching up here.  Sounds like everyone is making great improvements.

I feel a tiny bit of panic when I read these power bike posts because I don't know what it all means...I am pretty sure it is a given that I won't pace well in this IM thing (I am sure I will do the classic newbie thing and use too much power on the bike, totally blow up on the run).... honestly I am sorta ok with this (sorry to sound too lackadaisical) .... I am looking to finish... since I do not have any technology,  my rough plan is to really just try to look at the scenery on the bike and just keep repeating to myself "slow down, slow down".  Hoping maybe some "dress rehearsal" bricks later in the season will help me figure it out more.   I think I'll try to heart rate monitor a bit....I guess my question to the group is: do any of you remember racing without power (I guess I just need to hear that it CAN be done, right????Embarassed

I haven't done an IM yet but have no worries about not using power. I have no idea what the posts on power mean either Wink

It’s perfectly normal (imo) to feel this way.  Your training will reveal the answers to your pacing.  Follow and trust in the plan.

I race without power and done so on all my IM’s.  Actually I only use power training on my CT (Computrainer).  That’s a bike trainer that basically has or hooks up to a computer.  It’s gives me a rough idea at the time of training on it my power intensity.  When I am on the road I just go by RPE and my experience.

You’ll be fine without power.

Most of the stuff about power I don’t understand either.  I really don’t worry about it to much.

This group has a few people using power so I think the discussions just drifted that way.

Oh thanks so much James, Kathy, and Fred....I guess it would be more correct to say I don't have panic so much about not using power, I really have panic about just doing the race in general Smile...I guess I'll have a freak out now and then which I guess is normal.  I enjoy reading ALL the group posts as you are a super, informed, and friendly group.

Hey Kate,

This is a friendly group.  The other thing is like 3-4 people in this group have done IMLP.  So we should be on top to help calm your nerves.  I have seen some other with the finish goal and have done much better.  I think that taking as much stress away from the IM experience as possible is only a good thing.

The IMLP official thread is another great support and resource.  The DC freak outs will accrue on regular bases about 3 months out.    JK

Hey all -

Apart from the Packers win (woohoo!) we've been struggling through illnesses at my house for the past week+, so I haven't felt much like posting lately.  But we've finally come out the other end and everyone is healthy again.  At the same the weather is warming up this weekend, the sun is out, and I just finished today's workout.  The world feels right again.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Great job Randy with the PR in the pool.

I have been neglecting the pool lately. They had some cloudiness and so they dumped a bunch of fresh "freezing cold" water into the pool. I need to get back in there this week. Eight weeks out from my HIM.

I went bike heavy this week and so far I have 5:15 in the saddle. I have the same 8 mile mountain trail run tomorrow morning with local triathlon professionals. It was so much fun last week that we're doing it again this week. They do 2 laps (16+ miles) and I and most of the others do just one lap (8+ miles). I actually felt pretty good after it last week so I'm going to push it more tomorrow. I actually had a pretty good ride today and averaged 17 mph for 40 miles which was good for me.

Hope it's starting to warm up a bit so most of you can get outside and get some training done.

Nice enough here today for even a softy like me to run outside.  Enjoyed it.

Hope some of you are enjoying similar weather this weekend.
