Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Signed up my soon to be 7 year old son for his First kids Tri, at URI on June 12th. So he'll officially have a Tri in the books before me. 75 meter/feet?? swim, 1 mile bike, 1/2 mile run. He's pumped. Not really sure what to have him wear though. Kids Tri gear is almost as expensive as adults. Any suggestions? he can prob just s/b/r in his regular bathing suit he wears??? |

All the kids races I've ever seen all the kids wear their bathing suits. I might get him a pair of jammers, but that's about it. |

I have a ton of work to do so I'm sitting on my back deck in a bathing suit reading depositions. Not sure why there ever is a need to actually go into the office. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED My nephew did a kids tri this past weekend. He just wears a pair of compression shorts my Mom got him for the whole race (cheap) and socks and gym shoes. It is hard for kids to get a shirt on after the swim, so he goes without one and I have him wear a race belt (easier to get on). So here is the transition list I made him memorize (he already had on shorts or a bathing suit): Boys: socks, shoes, race belt, helmet & bike Girl: socks, shoes, race belt, helmet & bike After the bike, he just came, dropped his bike, took off his helmet and ran - can't beat a 19 second transition!!! |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED Yeh, maybe buy compression shorts or jammers, or just a bathing suit. In kids tris there is such a wide variance in what kids wear, know feels left out. |

My 7 year old son wants to do one also - I am trying to find one that is in a lake or pool rather than bay. I would think a bathing suit would be fine, but the idea of compression shorts sounds good too! |

http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/1670.htm Pretty cheap too (as far as tri gear goes). |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED I wouldn't worry about where the swim will take place (unless you are worried about temperatures), every race my nephew has done they can walk in the pool or lake and there are lifeguards everywhere. Plus, they don't have them very far from the beach at all because most kids are not comfortable swimming competitvely. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED If time is an issue, just stop at a sports store and get shorts (sport authority, dicks sporting good, etc). If you don't want to spend the money, lots of kids just wear what they normally wear to the pool. Unless the kids specifically train for tris (there are a ton in my area), they tris are just fun for the kids ---- and maybe more for the parents. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED So on that subject of kids triathlons, one of my local tri clubs is Multisport Madness. It is a very competitive club and has turned out many, many internationally competitive triathletes. In the USA triathlon magazine, Kelly Whitley and Kevin McDowell had won athlete of the year in the last 2 years and took bronze in the junior olympics in 2010. Kevin graduated from high school early in December and turned pro right away --- in his first event at the olympic distance, he took 10th place!!! Totally amazing. He has since been diagnosed with a highly curable form of hogkins lumphoma and is undergoing treatment, but will be training in colorado come Fall at the USA training center. Check out your USA magazine sometime and look to see how many of the athletes in the back are from Geneva or St. Charles, IL. They pump them out here!!! |

You need to take the bike as easy as possible. Its a tough bike and you're going to spike your HR and watts on the hills, try to keep both in control as much as possible. The goal should be to have a steady HR (for you in high Z2/ low Z3), which is difficult, you'll likely be redlining or super low because of the terrain. You just need to keep it under control as much as possible. Gaining a few minutes on the bike will cost you 30 minutes or more on the run. It going to be a l-o-n-g day, save it for the end. Start out the run in low Z3 and let you HR drift up slowly. If you feel fantastic during the last 5 - 10K of the run blow it out, but DO NOT blow it out before then. Ask Shaun, walking 13.1 miles is not fun at all. I actually think you would be best served by only seeing your HR for the race and not your time. This isn't about ego, its about maintaining a steady effort throughout the day. |

Jeff, it is at the University of Rhode island, put on by TriMom Productions, the same lady hosts the Crabman Sprint Tri and a few others. I believe Rudy does the Crabman???? here is the link. Only downfall is there is a "mandatory" packet pick up the day before, so from where you are, you'd have to make the trip to RI two days in a row! Let me know if you do it!

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2011 Part 2 - CLOSED So I was out in Cromwell for work today, and scheduled a visit with Deb at New England Athletic Club for my first swim lesson. my 30 min lesson turned into 40 mins, and the little things she showed me increased my confidence tremendously. My swimming background is pretty much splashing around in a pool or just swimming with my head above water. Attempted "real" swimming in February and I pretty much drank the whole pool. Haven't been back since. Wasn't so much that I couldn't swim across a pool and back, it was the proper breathing etc that was killing me. So today was a huge help. Looking forward to getting some purple on the training log!! |

It's going to be hard to beat her off for long.
In an effort to be as crazy as Kelly I went to the gym at lunch for a swim. Very relaxing actually and I may get a tan. Looks like a M,W,F ritual has been born. |

On the run, I know the general strategy is to go easy and then see how it feels the last few miles and try and hammer. however, given my major limiter is muscular endurance i have trouble employing this strategy but will try. yes, it will be a long day. hopefully it will be a good day. regardless it will be a PR i suppose. |

She was telling me how just about every presenter at her last fitness conference was once in the same boat I am with wanting to escape cubicle life, etc, etc, etc. Makes me feel a little better about a career change.
