I don't give much thought to the endless money supply but I think my husband and I would "retire" from our day jobs so that we could be a stay-at-home parents to a house full of foster/adopted kids, and have more flexible time to train. I'd probably also supplement my son's income so he could go in to full time ministry.

Chris, Brie.   You signed up yet? I hope so.

Dooooooooooooooooooooooo iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttt     !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOW.

(worry later)

Oh Weebly One, when is your next tri?  Innocent

Oooooh, double busted!

i FORGOT THAT Janyne has an encyclopaedic knowledge of every race that every Manatee has logged.

Ok, so here's the thing. I cunningly decided to enter the Grafman olympic distance on 12th August without actually registering or parting with any money. This was because i was scared concerned that i may not be able to get ready in time for the event and also the idea of having to set off at 4am in time to sign in etc and then be knackered for the race itself. It was also the latest race i could enter before i go on my annual holidays, 5 days later.

However, my holidays have now been postponed by a few days, leaving the weekend of 18th/19th August also available as i fly out to Turkey on the Monday. This gives me 3 options and i welcome your thoughts as well as the usual abuse etc.

1. Go for the Grafman Oly on August 12th. It is 2hrs away. Also has HIM event running at the same time

2. Go for the Erewash Sprint Tri on August 19th (pool based) ready for this right now.

3.Go for the Udo's Choice Allerthorpe Classic Triathlon (olympic distance) August 19th. 1 hour away so more user friendly. Also gives me one week extra training.

So, comments....

Since I've bailed on my Oly - because I legitimately don't think I'm ready, of course - I would not fault you for doing the same.  I hate feeling like I have to cram training in; makes the race not as special, I think.  And that extra week of training probably isn't going to make much of a difference, except mentally.  I would vote for the sprint, but what are you leaning towards?

My common sense tells me to put in a really good effort at the sprint. It is the easiest for me logistically and the target for my first sprint was just to finish. On this one, i could push harder and see my progress.

Unfortunately, common sense occasionally desserts me, and as such, the challenge of the later Oly keeps creeping in under the radar. Also i keep hearing chicken noises when i think of doing the Sprint. If i do the Oly however, i am back to aiming just to finish, as i have never yet come close to any of the distances involved whilst training, nevermind doing them back to back.

Honestly, that's one of the major reasons I wanted to switch to the sprint in my next race. yes, I was concerned about the distance but I knew I could finish.  But I feel like after putting in serious training since January, I want to try to race a little bit too, and I would not be racing the Oly distance.  I totally understand if you choose sprint and really go all out. Don't forget I believe it was Yanti's wise words, that the goal of a sprint is to feel like puking at the end.  I certainly don't race with that effort often, and didn't last weekend, so I'd like to try the same distance but go harder and see what time improvements I can make.  That's why i voted sprint for you too Smile

bcraht - 2012-07-18 7:21 PM If you were rich, and already had all the Tri gear you wantedLaughing, what would you spend your money on?   I'll start.  I would audit courses (cause I like to learn, but I HATE taking exams and writing papers) and I would buy books.  And build a library in my house, with a big fluffy chair, and a fireplace, and a ladder that moved so I could reach all my books.

FIRST - buy a horse. Maybe build a house and barn on some acreage so I could ride at my own place, but maybe I would pay to board. Or pay someone to help me care for the horse.

Second - do something non-profit, for cancer research.  I've lost both my parents to scary cancers (brain and pancreas) and I would do anything to help with funding for research and treatment.

Third - Quit my current job, probably try to do appellate work for people who wouldn't necessarily have the money to do appeals.  Defninitely more legal research/writing than what I do now.

I also like the idea of being a full time student. I loved being in school.  I like learning new things. Not sure what I would study...

And, common fantasy, a lot of travel. Definitely back to Australia, I LOVE Australia! And to Europe, some South American destinations, and Bali - obvi! Wink

Hey Salty, you were talking about doing a race together.  You seem like a music buff.  Here (Linky-poo) is one that has different international music every mile.  Best part?  Start is 2 minutes from my house.  Interested?

ETA: never mind, just noticed you have a race the next weekend.  Maybe next year?

Dang it! Yeah, and I have already registered for that race, too. (the one in October, that is) You could always come down and do that with me. It's the Portland half marathon. Of course, that is a bit of a trek from BC.

Wanna come down and do Danskin? http://www.danskintriathlon.net/seattle.html

I was thinking of doing a sprint some time soon...

What does everyone have on their plate this weekend?

Tonight I'm going a local park where they are rebroadcasting TdF stage 17 and projecting it on a huge inflatable screen. Plus is has a beer garden. Now I'm just trying to find someone to go with me. All my friends say something along the lines of, "Bike racing ewwwwww"

Tomorrow I am going to the Cap hill block party, which is a music festival and then doing some other stuff around home. I was supposed to go camping with the fam but I just need some time to move at my own pace for a few days.

That sounds soooooo cool! I'm WAY behind on the TdF (last night I finished watching last Thursday's stage).  Of course I know the stage winners because Macca is a terrible spoiler on Twitter, but it's fun to watch anyway.

For me bike ride tonight (to make up for missing yesterdays ride), packet pick-up and a swim tomorrow, and a sprint on Saturday before the normal weekend errands. Gonna try to really push it on the sprint, knowing I have to answer to you all if I don't HTFU!

I've got a weekend full of errands/work...I work on Saturday.  I also need to get some new goggles, have to pick up paint (petsitter is going to paint the kitchen and family room while I away in Calgary), need to get the spare room ready for the petsitter, blah, blah, blah.  At least my local park (as in right across the street) is having the annual Fusion Festival--2 days of international music, food, dancing.  I can open my windows and hear the music, don't even have to leave the house!

The TdF/beer garden sounds fun!

I love going at my own pace   I think I've got that on tap this weekend too (I also have Ithaca Beer apricot wheat "on tap," thanks to my local craft beer wonderland that I just discovered!!).  Probably a bike ride Sat. am then a horse ride after that. Hanging out with stepmom and stepbrother sat evening, and Sunday... absolutely NOTHING on the agenda. Those are rare this summer.  I might try to get hubby to go with me to Wallis Sands beach for a dip to try out the ocean swim concept...

You are right. Perhaps I am not selling this properly. I thought the beer garden angle would have worked.

Mmmmmmmmmm, I am a sucker for fruity beers (heehee) I don't care if my matcho guy friends make fun of me. Pyramid (based here in SEA and PDX) does an apricot as well and I LOVE IT. I also love  Hell or High Watermelon wheat beer from 21st Amendment (in San Fran) in fact that might be my current favorite.

I have no grand plans for the weekend, although I have a swim date with a hot blond piglet tomorrow 8am. (BLECH TIME ... think about how yummy the piglet would have to be to balance that out, and he is)

My plans for the weekend are to hole up in the fort and defend it fiercely from all intrusions (noise and otherworldly ones included) so that I can make slurping sounds to every live-broadcast minute of the Tour de Piglets.

The one on the left is like my brother. My parents took him in when I was in HS (family troubles etc.) anyway, he's special forces now and you know what the mofo says when I am about to leave the party (at a responsible hour) the night before my marathon? He says, "Well, do what you will Addy...but just keep in mind this might be the last time you see me with legs after I deploy to Afghanistan."

Ooooooh that sounds like a perfect weekend, well, minus the 8am swim. Are you swimming in the ocean or pool? Ocean makes 8am worthwhile, pool not so much.

Took my 15 (almost 16) year old son the the running store yesterday.  He said he wants to start running, for real!  Running store guy brought out Asics, Brooks, Nike and Addidas, looks like boy's a neutral foot.  He ended up choosing the Nike Pegasis which was actually on sale for $60!  I told shoe guy not to talk price until boy chose.  All the other shoes were over $100, I love when things work out like that.

He ran 1.5 miles with me this morning, that's a great start.

Speaking of critters, reptiles, amphibians, insects etc., I came across a black snake on my run today.  He was taking his sweet time crossing the path so I picked him up and placed him in the bushes so he wouldn't get run over.  He's just too valuable as rodent control!

Congrats to all you racers this past weekend!

Great to hear your not so little one is taking after you. 1.5miles is a great start!

Pool. It's been raining like the dickens here so I'm scared to go into the ocean because the rain act as a giant flush and the ocean becomes a septic tank for several days after.

He's the piglet on the right. He's gunning for a Kona spot next year and if he can get his swim around an hour, he's got the bike and run to do it, even in a wickedly competitive AG.

That is, of course, where I come in. I have sunk my teeth into his arm before, so I'm aiming for his calf next time. YUM!

Ooooooh that sounds like a perfect weekend, well, minus the 8am swim. Are you swimming in the ocean or pool? Ocean makes 8am worthwhile, pool not so much.

YUM!

So, you are going to kick his azz in the pool then?

Better go easy on him, if he is ever going to make it to Kona.

Also, dude, your sunglasses hahahaha

By the way, here are two of the said guys that made me drink too many beers before my marathon.

I figured sommmeeoneee might appreciate the pics.

JEEEEEEEEEZUS! Talk about some peer pressure! Wink the jerk!

Damn you. I was about to go to sleep and you got me all excited, after I'd finally calmed down from watching Stage 17.

So. Are they single? Does he need a nice pen pal to write him humorous and encouraging words to make his tour more bearable?

Sadly, no...and I like their wives (that is a pre-rec) so I can't encourage any shenanigans.
