duutri - 2011-03-16 11:55 AM I have a reservation at the Woodlands Marriott and just double checked it. I am still good. I noticed it is $11 a day to park. Also wondering if they will let you bring a bike to the room. If you have not been to the Marriott believe it is 8 stories thereabouts, so horsing a bike on the elevator may be problematic. Carrying one up several flights of stairs may be an issue as well.

So far, the problem seems isolated to the Residence Inn.

Apparently, if you have any kind of status within Marriott, they won't bump you either. Like many of you probably have, I got the "why are you all calling to confirm?" and "who told you this was happening?" questions.

bearpauly At times like this, it makes me wonder how they decide which reservations they're going to honor and which ones they're not.

I had a block of 4 rooms and I booked before the IM went on sale and they had a chance to raise their prices. They're sending me to a hotel that is a lower class (industry practice called "Walking Down") that has now jacked up their prices due to demand. I'm assuming it was easier to "move" 1 guest with multiple rooms than it was to deal with 4 guests with single rooms - although I was told that my reservation was made "after" they were already full. I'll believe that when they show me the reservation log. My reservations were guaranteed with a credit card - therefore the overbooking would qualify as a breach of contract and that the process of walking my reservations to a hotel of a lower class will stand with most authorities as a constitution of fraud and misrepresentation and is protected legally in Texas under the Deceptive Trade Practices and in article 17.46(9) advertising goods or services with intent not to sell them as advertised. Sent an e-mail to Marriott's Senior VP of PR and got a call back from them in less than 20 minutes. It was at the end of the day, so he's going to contact that GM and get back to me today. I'll stay positive on Marriott's behalf - for now.
Umm...yeah...obviously! I will be curious to see what the senior vp of pr says back to you...will you keep us posted?

Still working the situation out, but if you want the not-so-juicy details, I've posted them here:

http://irontexasmommy.blogspot.com/2011/03/marriott-residence-inn-w...

Typically, I'm understanding and will go with the flow. I'm sorry, but this is not one of those times. I'm thankful for the fact that we at least have hotel rooms and am not posting this to get flamed or even stir up a debate. I'm frustrated and will leave it at that and wanted anyone else that reserved rooms at this hotel to be aware of the situation.

Back to training talk, right Marcy?

These questions are actually good news for those of you that are getting screwed, because it shows a concern that the word is spreading.  Be sure and point out to the local managers and especially the VP of PR that this is a topic of discussion on two of the largest triathlon sites in the world (I'd make the post myself on ST, but one of you that's getting bumped should probably do it) and that LOTS of people are watching closely to see how it gets handled.  You know they'll believe you.  The local managers will be worried about bad word of mouth, but the PR guy will be even more concerned about overall damage to the brand, especially given the demographics of IM triathletes.  Be sure and point those out (average age, household income, professional status, travel habits, etc) if they're not already aware of them.

Once you do that, ask them what time the shuttle bus will be picking you up from wherever they stick you to bring you to the athlete's village (or at least to the Residence Inn).

I agree, Dennis. Although, I've never visited or posted on the SlowTwitch site and wouldn't feel right swooping in to post something of this nature - since I don't have a history there. You have my blessing to re-post and share the blog link. I'd appreciate your comments on the blog site as well, as that link will be shared with Marriott. Other than that, working on my "Namaste" and moving forward.

Can someone please clarify the part of the course where it says to "bear right onto Fish Creek"? I'm just not seeing that on the map, and none of the mapmyride routes that I can find show that. Sendera Ranch Dr comes off of Honea Egypt Rd, and then becomes Fish Creek... so I'm assuming that's what they are referring to?

Thanks,
JD

Edited to add: Found another description on ST which references a missing left turn on Mahogany Way. Thus:

From 2978; bear right onto Egypt Ln (vs Egypt Road)

Straight thru 1488 onto Conroe-Huffsmith

Left on Mahogany Way

Right on Honea Egypt

Bear Right onto Sendera Ranch Dr which becomes Fish Creek

Also, after the Left on Bays Chapel; that right turn would have to be 149, correct? Turning right on 1486 doesn't make any sense...

Should I contact the GM and tell her I'd like another confirmation for the one room she said she's trying to keep me in? Should I demand my second room back? I still have my inital confirmation and booking with CC.

I didn't raise a fuss and calmly expressed my unhappiness with the situation, but wondering if I should firm up? Moving to a hotel farther away is NOT an option for me.

If you stay straight you will be on Fish Creek - you almost have to make a full left to turn to stay on Honea-Egypt. Basically, once you cross 1488 you just go straight until you go over the new overpass (can't miss it) and turn on 2854.

The above is correct. I think of Sendera Ranch and Fish Creek as the same road. When you're riding it, you just keep going straight. On the map it looks much more like a fork where Honea Egypt veers off than it does in real life.

You're also correct that the right turn off Bays Chapel is onto 149.

Thank you for the confirmation (and you too, Erin). If you don't mind me pushing my luck; the directions after that are kind of squirrely as well (seems to be something missing between 2562 and the right turn on 1486).

I'm working on a full set of directions with mileage markers, which I'll post here after my ride this weekend.

If I can get this 149/1486/2562 part figured out, I'll be able to post what I have, including approx. mileage. Then I can correct/update next week after I drive and ride it.

I swear that the (insert expletive of your choice) winds here in Austin are getting stronger by the day.  Just threw down another 45-miler and coming back into that headwind is just so mentally bruising.  Took me 58 minutes going out, 1:18 coming back with an average power 10 watts higher.

Here's what I've been able to piece together from the official maps, google maps, and various tidbits of advice from others on BT and ST. I reserve the right to be entirely wrong; and if I get lost on Saturday, this will be why Cool

Mileages are all rough approximations until I can actually drive the course (doing it in car first, and I'll bring my Garmin for that).

• Start at Town Green Park

• Left on Lake Robbins

• Left on Grogan’s Mill

• Right on Woodlands Pkwy (BEFORE MILE 1)

• Right on 2978 (BEFORE MILE 9)

• Bear right onto Egypt LANE (MILE 10)

• Straight thru 1488 onto Conroe Huffsmith

• Left on Mahogany Way (Short)

• Right onto Honea Egypt (MILE 12)

• Bear right (mostly straight) onto Sendera Ranch Road/Fish Creek   new overpass connecting Fish Creek to FM 2854 is open.

• Left on 2854 (approx MILE 19) -> thru 105 becomes Lone Star Pkwy

toughest part of the course is 60 miles or so starting north of 105

• Right onto 149 (approx MILE 30)

• Right onto Osborne Rd (MILE 36.5) -> Look for big carport on the right of it and a black wooden fence around it

• Left on FM 1375 (dead end around MILE 40)

• Right on 149 (dead end around MILE 42)

• Right on 1791 Rd (Just BEFORE MILE 44)

• Left on Taliaferro Rd after bridge (approx MILE 45)

• Left on County Rd 209 (Just BEFORE MILE 47)

• Left on Bays Chapel (Just AFTER MILE 49 -> Short)

• Right on 149 -> says 1486 on official directions, which is not possible

• Left on FM 2562 (AFTER MILE 56)

• Left on FM 2819 (or 237 to 2819) (MILE 59) -> missing from official directions

• Right on 1486 (Just AFTER MILE 64) -> continue all the way past 105

• Left on Jackson (MILE 80)  -> optionally stay on 1486, LEFT on 1774, LEFT on 1488, RIGHT on 149 (avoids traffic but adds couple miles)

• Straight on 149 -> Jackson turns into 149

• Left on State Spur 149 (MILE 90) -> short

• Right on Dobbin Hufsmith

• LEFT on 2978 (MILE 98) -> says RIGHT on the official map, but that can’t be right

• Right on Greenmore (approx 3/4 mile from Woodlands Pkwy) -> alternatively keep going to Woodlands Pkwy (Greenmore does not show on google or mapquest maps)

• Right onto May Valley Drive

• Right onto W Branch Crossing Drive (missing from official directions)

• Right onto Woodlands Pkwy

• Left on Grogans Mill

• Right on Lake Robbins

• Finish at Town Green Park

Can you explain?  What makes the section north of 105 that much harder?  Is that where the majority of the rollers are?

this part isn't really that complicated and you dont get on mahogany way at all..

Right on 2978 (BEFORE MILE 9)

Straight thru 1488 (2978 turns into honea egypt turns into sendera ranch turns into fish creek... it is basically a straight away)

new overpass connecting Fish Creek to FM 2854 is open.. head west on 2854 (actually take a left just past the overpass, curve back towards 2854 and take a right turn on 2854)
