jarvy01 - 2012-05-15 12:45 PM I got Chrissie's book a few days ago.  I've read half of it.  She seems like such an interesting, kind person.  I wasn't familiar with her backstory at all before starting the book.  I have to say I was shocked to hear she struggled with eating disorders.  I know many female athletes struggle with them, but I wouldn't have thought she'd be one of them.  I loved reading about her early days of training (before Sutton)......wearing the wetsuit that was too large, slipping on the pool's steps, gluing on the pedal, etc.  I smile every time she calls herself Muppet.  LOL  Good stuff.  Anyone else reading it right now?

I'm about half way through as well.  Also reading Amanda Beard's book -- Jen, youd like that one as well.

Lunch time trainer session out of the way.  HR training seems to be making a huge impact there.  Need to dial my diet back in.  Too many functions on the weekend where I just haven't controlled myself has added a few lbs.

It just downloaded last night to the kindle app a little after midnight so I haven't gotten a chance yet. Looking forward to starting tonight though.

I read Amanda's book last month.  I think her ghost writer could have done a better job, but her story is very interesting.

uhcoog - 2012-05-15 8:09 AM I really need to figure out a way to get Cindy on board for a IM.  All my friends posting on FB about IMTX this weekend has me really fired up, and extremely jealous.

I'll sign up for IMTX next year if you do.

Shaun can babysit.

Give me a couple months.  I just don't want Cindy to have to deal with a 2 month old while I'm racing or have to look at the prospect of being on a 6 hour training ride when she goes into labor or something.  I guess I'm going to wait until I know an approximate due date before making any decisions.

Babysitting someone else's 2 month old?  That's brave.  Very brave

Scott - You need to find an A race for this season that gets you excited!  I'm sure it's hard when all your buddies are doing IMTX though.

No IM for me until Freddy is in preschool.  There is absolutely no way I can swing it with babies at home all day long.  It's absolutely draining and physically impossible.  It would truly burden Kevin on the weekends, too, and I don't want our marriage to suffer.  I want to do 2 70.3s next summer (at least 1 of those will be mdot).  Maybe....just maybe...IM in 2014?

I have an A race in the fall that I'll probably get more excited about as it approaches.  It's a local half iron race.  There is something to be said for the friendships forged and the camaraderie amongst a group of people that train for an event like an Ironman together though.  Also I had planned to put in for IMTX up until a conversation about family planning with Cindy a month or two ago at which point that was put into limbo.  As the opening of registration approaches I guess I still haven't wrapped my head around the fact it's probably not going to happen.

I know you are disappointed.  I am sorry, Scott.  It sounds like you have an amazing support network, and I hope they'll be there for you when it is your time to race IM.

I finished my copy last week, loved it.  Enjoyed getting to know Chrissie.  Never did figure out why she was called mupput.  Are all muppets some what un-coordinated.  Did anyone else notice how she lives her live in 5 year cycles?  What an amazing woman!!!

Muppet is just British slang for a klutz.  Several times during the TdF last year, Mark Cavendish made comments about "right muppets in the peloton" in reference to guys who couldn't control their bikes and caused brashes.

I don't think Chrissie had a ghostwriter, which is refreshing.

Chrissie is certainly a klutz.  How does one cut themselves with a knife taken the computer off their bike.

Cav will be using stronger language about the peloton after this years Giro.

Kelly,

I enjoyed reading you blog and opinion on Kristi Johnson toeing the line at the ITU World Championship this weekend, and whether she deserved it or not.

Although on a much smaller scale, the USAT  National Championship held in Burlington, VT, can be looked at the same. Clearly you are not racing for a spot on the Olympic team. But I believe the qualification process is similiar in the fact that you can qualify at smaller events. I am an example. I entered a small, first year Sprint Tri last August, simply because it was in my home town. Being in it's first year, it attracted roughly 250 people or so. Two days before the race, they made a last second decision to move it from Sunday to Saturday, due to Hurricane Irene coming. Point being, they lost about 50 people, giving me a 5th overall and a 1st in my AG, qualifying me for the US Nationals in Vermont. There is no way I would even compete, nor do I belong at a Championship event, and am not showing up for that reason (unless something miraculous happens to my speed this summer). Again, it's on a much smaller scale than competing for an Olympic spot, but am I correct that Kristi Johnson sort of qualified the same way by competing in an event many athletes didn't show up for????

Kristi became a pro last fall by competing at an event with a pro prize purse of over $25,000 but with a very small amateur field.  Under USAT rules there are lots of ways to get your pro card (including having a pro card from USATF, USA Cycling or USA Swimming or placing in the top 5 of your AG in Kona or Las Vegas).  One of the ways is place in the top 3 amateur overall in an event with a pro prize purse of more than $25,000.  Kristi came in as the 3rd overall amateur at the Nickel City Tri in Buffalo, New York last fall with a time of (I believe) 2:27, and thus earned her pro card.  Note just because you earned a pro card does not mean you have to take your pro card.  There are lots of individuals (Bryan for example) who have qualified for pro cards and have decided to remain age groupers.  My friend Amanda earned her pro card (3rd amateur female at IMLP) but has not taken it because she doesn't feel that she is ready to compete at the pro level yet.

Once you have a pro card, you can request that USAT place you on the potential start list for ITU events.  Kristi put her name in for the San Diego race.  There was essentially a strange series of events that led the U.S. to get 10 slots and the final slot rolled down to Kristi.  As I said on my post, she got the slot fair and square, the rules are just really bad (for example other girls who actually had ITU points were not made aware of the roll down).  Problem is, while she got the slot "legally" from USAT she shouldn't have been there and her decision to start the race put other athletes in danger (see Hunter Kempter in Myrtle Beach last year).

Thanks for this explanation, Kelly. I understand it a lot better now!

jarvy01 - 2012-05-01 9:18 AM For the women here -- I ordered SOAS tri shorts and tri top.  They fit perfectly and feel super comfy.  Shorts are pretty short though, so if you like them longer, then this brand isn't for you (they only have the one option for inseam).  I ordered the set with the hot pink accents and polka dots down the sides  Anyway, it's a newer line of clothing, so I thought I would share my experience.

Jen - any update on how you like this brand? Still feel comfy? Wash well?

So is there any way to keep tabs on how full an Ironman event is?  I got the go ahead last night after a long talk for IMTX AS LONG AS there isn't a due date for May. So I figured I'd wait as long as possible to make sure.

Great news! I tell it is a blessing when you have a support system. Me and the wife are wanting another as well and I know once we get serious it will change things but luckily she has recently gotten bitten by the get in shape bug so I am rolling with it

I'm not aware of a way.  With the non-IM fulls, you can usually email and find out, or they sometimes have posted on the website.  But for IM, I don't know how you'd know.  I've usually looked at when it sold out in prior years.

ETA - can't you just "play hard to get" for the one or two month window that would put May as a due date. Wink

Yeah it was December.  I just remember finding out that there were a few hundred spots left and there was a rush on entries.  Just didn't know if that info is readily available.  Not that I'm opposed to taking a Foundation spot and fundraising the difference.

Good luck on your interview!

uhcoog - 2012-05-16 9:08 AM So is there any way to keep tabs on how full an Ironman event is?  I got the go ahead last night after a long talk for IMTX AS LONG AS there isn't a due date for May. So I figured I'd wait as long as possible to make sure.

Wink

Is any male capable of "playing hard to get?"

Uh, no.  This concept is completely foreign to us and another reason why you damned women frustrate us soooo much.
