losta - 2010-02-09 2:31 PM Hey gang! I finally got a 20 minutes time trial/power test in today. I have been trying for about a month, first I did a pre test to make sure I knew what it would feel like for the 20 minutes at a sustainable 70%-80% of my max. Then a week later I went to do the actual test and my garmin ate the file so I had no record. Then I tried using the little yellow computer and the garmin and the signals kept fowling the other devices and I kept losing signals, next my training schedule wasn't set to drop in a hard (though short) ride and eventually my stomach bug last week prevented me from getting it done but I finally got it today....Wheww Everybody take care and/or get better. THe light at the end of the tunnel is getting closer.

Lisa - please excuse my ignorance, but what is a time trial/power test??  Sounds like a HR related test on the bike, but I'm not sure.  Sounds interesting - can you elaborate for us newbies

Evening Gary

Wife is headed out to yet another girl night- it always seems that the Bdays, baby showers, etc fall within a 4 week period every year and they're one after another.  Me - bathing the kids, read them books and put 'em to sleep and hopefully find a good movie to watch.

BTW - got in a short bike ride this am and a swim at lunch - running 6 miles tomorrow at 5am - have a good night all

Evening Garry...

Hey Mike... I feel your pain... been there, done that... thank goodness THAT's over with. I don't begrudge her going out at all though. She deserves the time as much as we do... maybe even more so. Being a mother is a brutal job, they deserve all our respect and admiration for doing it. (IMHO ... and no I'm not trying to kiss up to any one )

Lisa... I think I know what that test is... but I want you to explain it to our newbie friends. I could be wrong and don't want to confuse the issue by putting my pennies in.

Huh?
No it isn't! Its the best job on the planet!
Its the most fun I have ever had. And yes I am being perfectly serious!

Good job getting the TT power test in Lisa!
As you probably all know I am too hippy dippy to do such things.
The numbers do NOTHING for me....I despise them. So I have GREAT admiration for people that approach their training with a scientific approach.
Details Lisa?
Looks like we could all learn.

Determing threshold power with a field test is the most important first step to a power-based training program

By Frank Overton

The 20-minute field test: Wattage zones.

A simple 20-minute field test can determine your power at threshold and is the best starting point for a power-based training plan. Knowing one’s threshold wattage gives you the ability to use wattage-based training zones and to understand power readout in real time on the bike. Most importantly, you will be able to analyze training data on your computer and measure your cycling improvement.

What
A field test is a real world and scientifically supported method for cyclists to determine their threshold power. It is performed by the cyclist going as hard as they can for 20 minutes, just like a time trial. The average wattage from the test is used to determine the rider’s power at threshold.

Why
Threshold power is the wattage-based equivalent of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate. It is the goto number for a sport science and power based training program because it 1) measures your fitness and 2) establishes your wattage-based training zones.
To perform a 20-minute wattage based field test, here’s what you will need:
an accurately calibrated, working, reliable power meter capable of downloading the test data
a good stretch of road (or a good trainer) w/o interruptions for 20 minutes (climb preferably)
a heap of motivation
a maximal effort
power analysis software
the the average power for the 20 minute test

This came from:
http://velonews.competitor.com/2009/02/coaches-panel/coach-frank-ov...

The power meter that I have is called a Powertap. It is built into the hub of my rear wheel and it communicates wirelessly to either it's own little yellow computer or a Garmin Edge 700, Edge 500 or Forerunner 310XT. It records my speed (even on the trainer), cadence, power and more data.

I then send the file to my coach for review. The advantage of using power for training is that power is power, weather you are on hills or flats, it is a measurable, when racing with power you should be able to maintain your pace by reading your power and knowing what your training has prescribed.

It is pretty new to me, I just my powertap in November, but I expect to use this technology in my racing season this year.

And yes, I'm a total geek.

Good morning.  Is it the weekend yet?

In any event, my wife wouldn't let me run outside last night - and it was to be 5 mile day based on the HM schedule.  today is to be 3M and th. rest.  Those of y'all smarter than me (which would be anyone reading this) - what do you think - do I do 5 today, moving "rest day" to Tuesday and continue on, or something else.?  (I am doing the plan featured on the cool running website for the guy who's going to do his run in about 2 hours)

Hey everyone! Been snowed in today- ALL of us were home, which was honestly fun and relaxing. I got an hour in on the trainer and treadmill and spent the rest of the day vegetating with the kids- DH did the shoveling. Work is still keeping me from Masters but I have been creative with getting in my runs and trainer rides.  I don't really like working out indoors but an so happy I have the option to do so at home- the thing that makes it worst for me however is the SWEAT.

Some people never seem to sweat, but I sweat alot and fairly easily. It dosen't bother me outdoors, but inside? ugh. I don't always enjoy gyms for the same reason. At leats indoors I have the option to cool down before I shower without someone asking me if I am ok, LOL!

Morning all!!!

The "weaker of the sexes"....really Kevin???????? Its gonna take a lot of sucking up to repair that statement!!!!!

Well we dodged another storm. They predicted a "blizzard" and we got a dusting. It has been a very strange winter here in New England.

Hoping to get out and run today before work.

I am very "non technical" when it comes to training. I use RPE for everything. I have never done a LT and dont own a power tap. I dont even really like using my Garmin. I find that "numbers" really suck the joy out of  training for me. I do speed work and I know when I am working hard or easy. I have improved my times each year so it works for me. Some people are really committed to training with numbers and that works for them.

I hope you all have a good day ( except kevin ...til he explains himself)

>>>grovel on<<< Oh great and marvelous Marianne... I put the weaker in quotations... I guess I should have turned on the sarcasm font too. It only took until today to get my tongue out of my cheek since I wrote that statement.  >>>\grovel off<<<

*teasing here* It was only the tongue and cheek?  I thought there were different body parts involved.

See why we are such good friends???  Marianne and I have the exact same philosophy. Because this is what works for us.

There are however lots of people for whom the opposite is true....they thrive on numbers and it gets them motivated.
Best to find your own  style and work the way that best suits you!

Good Morning,

So Kevin, brutal may not have been the best word choice to describe being a mother.  IMO- being a parent is the most important and difficult job anyone can have.  Being responsible to teach, love and nuture another human being to become a respectful, productive citizen is a challenge and one that if isn't given top priority has severe consequences.   Being an elementay teacher, I see first hand the results of poor parenting.  Not everyone has the zest that Helen has.  The older I get I find that making sure I get time to myself.  Without it I am not as good of a parent.  Too cranky, becoming a triathlete has really helped me be more balanced.

Enough of that.  I'm nursing a pulled quad or pinched siatic, or something.  Went to the chiropractor yesterday, got adusted and had an hour massage.  It's feeling better today.  Hoping the pain is gone for the indoor tri on Saturday.
