chris2533 - 2012-01-15 5:12 PM 15 mile run while while on long weekend in Wisconsin. 2:13:24. Ran along Wisconsin river. Very nice. Saw a flock of at least 20 wild turkeys and a bald eagle. And a little brush with danger. Ran past a farm and heard the farmer start yelling "Get back here! Get back here!" Turn around and see really mangy and mean looking mutt running right at me full speed with farmer still yelling at him. He wasn't stopping. I know this sounds like I'm trying to puff myself up as a tough guy, but I did what works with dogs (at least this one.) I stopped, turned, looked at the dog in the eye, and put out my arm like a stiff arm tackle and yelled "STOP!". The dog stopped on a dime. I then pointed and yelled "GO!" and he ran back to his owner. Again, not sure this would work every time, but it worked here.
I know the feeling, I was chased by Kujo one time while doing a Century ride in Waco back in '09, I almost had a heart attack trying to outsprint him for over a quarter mile. Here's the letter I wrote for him:

Dear Kujo,

Thanks for not eating me today. I still have many dreams that are unfulfilled and a family to feed.

Ernesto

Here's the reply:

Dear City Slicker,

Don't you worry, you skinny cyclists don't even qualify for a snack. Just messin' with cha. See you next year for the Century.

Kujo

Today I ran my beloved Katy Trail for a total seven miles in 58'21", four very easy and the other three alternating a hard pace and recoveries at different distances. My legs are terribly swollen from the bike yesterday.

MAF run, third time's the charm. 5 mile run (longest run for me distancewise and timewise) @1:09:59.  Avg HR 140, max HR 145. Higher speed at lower HR than last try, so I feel good about the run.

Felt like I could continue all morning. However at the end (mile 4.98...not kidding), felt a pull in the right lower leg. Iced it and feels better, but there is still a tightness sensation mid-way between ankle and calf in the back of the leg. Scrapped plans to run tomorrow, so maybe a swim (with a lot of pulling).

Sounds like a lot of us had a similar day, very busy...I had to peel myself out of the house and go take a swim for the challenge sake! On a good note, I'm seeing slight improvement in swim time!!!  30:48 1271 yards

Love the Kujo stories.  I met my kujo last summer, I didn't know what to do when a German Shepard began to chase me as I passed local creek.  The man he was with screamed, "Lady, he's not my dog!  I just found him here and am waiting for the police"  OH GREAT!  Turned out to be a very friendly, well-trained dog, who just wanted to accompany me on a bike ride - PTL!  Very scary, good job Chris and Ernesto...I would have been eaten!!!

Matthew,
You're not alone in having a rough first open water race swim.  My first was at the Florida Half IM.  It was open water in tea colored water and no wetsuit.  I walked into the water when the gun went off and everything was fine until the water got up to my neck.  Then I started to hyperventilate and my HR went crazy.  I had to breaststroke for a few minutes until I could catch my breath and get my HR back down to a reasonable level.  For a few moments I was a little scared but once I calmed down my breathing slowed and I was able to push through.  After a few more minutes of breaststroke I was able to start swimming freestyle slowly and it went ok from there.  The point is staying calm in open water is the key.  Get some practice open water swims and remind yourself a lot to stay relaxed.  You'll be a champ open water swimmer before you know it.

Samy, I'm going to rob a phrase from Mark Allen:

Endurance training is like turning a styrofoam cup inside out, as long as you do it slowly you will do it fine. Hurry up and "rip", there goes the cup. You are the cup.

Mileage increases are to be done in increments of no more than 10 percent a week. Even then you have to back off every third week to let the body "catch up" with the increased stress. Take it easy, listen to your body. No one is in there except for you, so it is very important that you listen to what it says to you. When you're tired, rest, when eager, train hard.

I finally forced myself to sleep in today and am feeling a little more rested now!  Just finished an indoor bike ride for 50:45, 14.4Mi

Ernesto, great bike ride you got in and did not know you could do all that climbing in TX.

Jim, kuddos to you for getting your workout in, despite such a hectic weekend!

Matthew, you will do way better the next time, so no need to loose any sleep over it!

A horrible 3.89 mi  30 minute treamill run. Hotel sleep and bas food will kill you. I am just happy I pulled it off before check out. The good news is I think my daughter will go to Michigan State and be a Spartan like her old man. We still have a visit to Penn State in the Spring. Just wanted to let everyone know that Carol (aka squirt) is doing the Carlsbad half marathon with the InsulINdependence team next Sunday.  We met online in Ernesto's last season mentoring forum.  We have done a couple of tris together, taking turns staying at each other's houses.

You can read about Carol at http://tinyurl.com/6owuadh .  She has been an inspiration to me.  I did not ask her permission to share with you part of the email she sent to me and a few others.  I would encourage you to join me in supporting Carol however you can, particularly if you know someone with Type 1 diabetes.

"If you are able to contribute financially, the dollars you give will directly support the InsulINdependence Junior Captains program. This is a program that pairs up a young person with Type 1 diabetes with an adult who also has the disease and is active in marathons, triathlons and other physically demanding pursuits.  The child trains for and participates in events with his or her mentor helping and encouraging along the way.  To expand its youth outreach in 2012, Insulindependence is offering more scholarships to Junior Captains than ever before, and you can help to make that happen!

I know times are tough, and there are a lot of demands on everyone's resources at this time of year.  If participating financially is not feasible (or even if it is), I would love it if you would send me the name of your favorite motivational song that I could put on my ipod to play during my training and racing in this event.  Above all, I would covet your prayers that many children and adults will gain hope and learn that diabetes need not limit their ability to live full and active lives."

really great swim yesterday - my new coach made me swim 150's while everyone else swam 100's. Felt miserable at the time for being singled out but real sense of achievement now and wanting more! Also knowing that I get to up date my challenge is a real sense of belonging.

 Great job everyone!!

Gained some weight after the weekend but it is only water retention from the hard Saturday workout. Hopefully the trend will continue in the downwards direction. I'm still faithful to the diet, only took carbs (heavily) during the ride to make sure I wouldn't bonk. Mission accomplished!

Ernesto:

Not part of the weight challenge since weight loss is not really a goal. But day 8 into the non-carbo diet and I've dropped 6 pounds (160 - 154) or 3.75%. Feel great, but not really interested in losing much more weight. The thought of eating more is somewhat unappealing as I am getting sick of protein rich food. When I had my body fat % checked by my doctor in the middle of last season at close to this same weight I was at ~8.6%. The thing is I feel even leaner now. Just want to make sure I'm not going the wrong way so early in the season.

Also, as reality check here for others thinking that I am in an enviable position vis-a-vis weight loss, weight is somewhat of screwy topic for me as I suffer from colitis, which when flaring presents all kinds of nutrition and GI issues. I am on meds now which keeps things in control and has very little side effects, but things can change at any time and at any moment. Not suprisingly, a lot of people with colitis have adopted a low carbo diet as a means to control inflamation in the colon.

Joe,

I have a lot of empathy for your situation. My wife also has colitis, and nutrition is an incredibly tricky subject for her. Like yours, hers is managed with meds, but when she has flair-ups it is very difficult to keep her body from going into a starvation mode because her body isn't absorbing any nutrients. It took her a long time to find that delicate balance between what would give her the nutrition she needs, but not make the flare-ups worse. She does have a higher protien diet, especially when her autoimmune disease tries to take over.

I don't think it is an issue (eating low carbs) since it reduces inflammation and that is as I understand part of the issue with colitis. Since it seems that you have read the book, you should probably start reintroducing good carbs into your diet coming from certain fruits and other sources without gluten, grains or refined sugars.

The key thing is like you said, you are feeling great. Have you noticed any training changes?

Samy, I'm going to rob a phrase from Mark Allen:

Endurance training is like turning a styrofoam cup inside out, as long as you do it slowly you will do it fine. Hurry up and "rip", there goes the cup. You are the cup.

Mileage increases are to be done in increments of no more than 10 percent a week. Even then you have to back off every third week to let the body "catch up" with the increased stress. Take it easy, listen to your body. No one is in there except for you, so it is very important that you listen to what it says to you. When you're tired, rest, when eager, train hard.

Thanks...I kind of knew about the 10% rule, and went back to look at my log for the last 2 weeks and was surprised at the increase. I knew I was running more, but did not know that it was that much more. I guess with the colder temperatures I switched swimming for running without thinking about it. I actually felt (feel) good, only regular aches, and running at MAF HR also eased the stress on my body, so I might have pushed too much.

Today went for a swim, and stopped with about 4x50 meter to go when  I felt a slight cramp on my right calf (same calf), so playing it safe (felt great before that). Tomorrow biking, and will try an easy 3 mil run on wednesday to see how I feel.

Swam 1,400 mts @ 39 min. Great swim until I had to stop from a slight cramp on my right calf. First time swimming 400 freestyle straight without switching to breastroke, while keeping a consistent stroke. Second straight swim that goes well, so feeling better about my swimming.

JoePetto - 2012-01-16 9:20 AM Ernesto: Not part of the weight challenge since weight loss is not really a goal.

The biggest change I have noticed is that my training seems effortless and that I can go for a lot longer. The run is a work in process doing the MAF thing, but after 2 hours and 40' yesterday on the trainer at MAF with 200+ power, I ran 7 miles in the wind at MAF and my legs felt fresh. Have also noticed reduction in inflammation in the knees and feet.

Started Ernesto's taper week today.  Track session. 6x200m reps with 200m recovery.  The temperature has dropped a lot over the last few days and there's frost everywhere.  One side of the track was covered in thick frost, but fortunately the bit I needed for the fast sections was clear.

Ernesto - will it be okay if I do the interval set on Thursday on the treadmill?  It's going to be a bit tricky getting to the track, but there's a treadmill at work that I can use after I've finished.

Mark, Glad you enjoyed your swim.  Having fun is big with preacher E!

Charlotte,  If you make your Garmin connect account public and put the link for eahh workout, it's easier for Ernesto to follow.  Take a look at my logs and you will see what I mean.

Interesting ride today.  First I got sprinkled on.  Then I noticed the bolt to the front shifter was missing and the shifter was just dangling by the cable.  Stopped at the shop and they fixed it.  Took off again and had a flat about 4 miles later.  I was just thinking that I hadn't changed the tube on my tri bike yet and I should do it before a race.  Well, today was the day.  Then I got sprinkled on again on my way home.  I had a blast!  Any bad riding day is better than a good day at work!  And I like my job.
