Cord would be Larry -- the slightly creepy but well-meaning buddy.

Its true

Who's Mr. Furley?

Who can tell me the name of the character (and his wife) that Mr. Furley replaced?

Was it Roper?

Thanks.  That was it.

That's how we roll!
You just wait for me to go away??? Ouch, that kinda hurt.

Coffee kicked in

When the coffee kicks in, that's usually when I text tony.....
Ok first of my many stupid questions of the day.  why does everyone text tony or do I need to go to the Urban dictionary?

To quote Kido....there is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid people asking questions. Texting Tony = #2

Oh you mean inquisitive idiots.  I manage to be one of them now and then.

It is amazing how many of those have PhDs...

Kate don't tease me, I just learned about a program that could actually make that process a lot less intimidating.

I never thought the process was intimidating except to the wallet.

Exactly, the program would virtually eliminate that problem, Problem #2 getting accepted to a program.  Is it "mostly true" that universities within a state system do not hire its own PhDs?

That's because you and Yanti are super smart as the rest of us?  Not so much.

I've know a number of PhDs that arent that "smart".  They know a lot about what they know but they don't know how to think critically or extrapolate and I am convinced some PhD's come straight out of a crackerjack box!

I got a $100 bill in my pocket...  That's rare.

Oh, interesting observation.  The first 30 yrs of my life in the midwest and Denver, seeing a $100 bill was sort of a novelty.  I probably only saw a couple per year.  But when you are on the strip here in Vegas, they are as common as $20's it seems.  Even the ATM's spit them out like $20's.

Really what kind of PhDs are they offering?

I have wondered about that myself.  I understand it used to be that they wouldn't to maintain diversity of thought but I am not so sure these days with the instant colaboration abilities that exist now.

That is not helping me decide what I want to do when I am forced to grow up in 13 months.  I could delay it for a few more years as a professional student and put off the real world.

a PhD only shows you were dedicated enough to keep going to school.  Some of the stupidest people I know have PhDs.  I respect that they put in the work to get a piece of paper, but a good chunk of the time I am thoroughly unimpressed with what they bring to the table.

I grew up in NM where my dad worked at Lost Alamos labs as a metallurgic engineer working on nuclear reactors and weapons so I got to meet some of those super smart nuclear physiscists.  Those guys are scary smart but damn are some of them lacking in common sense.  Some of them couldn't even change a flat tire if they needed to.

Nothing quite like going to pick your Dad up from work and having to sit in the car under the watchful eye of a really big guy with an M16 in his arms.

Pretty sure it is coming my way.  NOAA has it coming up the gulf coast so we'll both get the windward side fun stuff.

Teejaay - 2012-08-23 1:19 PM Ive gained 2 lbs on the scale yet I'm getting smaller and my clothes are getting baggier. I want the scale to go down!!!!!!! Less poundage to cart about on the bike or on my hikes.

That means you are putting on some good leg muscle from the rowing!!!  =)

At the university and definitely graduate level, they're practically required for advancement.

Otherwise, I wouldn't know. I didn't think they were that taboo in the States, at least not at the university level. By the time you get to grad school, it seems like half the professors are paired with current or former grad students.

Yep! Me quads are getting quite puffy! I also do a lot of deadlifts and squats so there is much added junk in the trunk these days too. All good. But still a big number to cart uphill on a bike. There is plenty o blubber that can go still!

Yeah I looked down at my quads the other day and thought well now Thunder Thighs it is.  My leg press is up to 950 lbs and I have one more set of plates to go to reach my goal.    Luckily there are no hills in FL.

Yeah, I guess so.  I'm not familiar with that whole higher learning scene.

Sure it would be tempting to hook up with some coeds, but if I was a prof, I would be worried about that.  Sexual harassment or such.
