New user 160 | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Has anyone successfully eliminated foot / calf cramping in the pool? I sometimes get cramps in my arches and can usually work them out through stretching or simply focusing on relaxing my feet while kicking. However, last night I got a terrible charlie horse in my calf (of course with only 125m to go on my last set of 5x500!)--it was so bad that it feels bruised today. I eat a banana every day, I drink a lot of water, I use a lacrosse ball to roll out tightness in my arches, I use a foam roller to loosen my calves (though I should use it more often, probably). A friend suggested salt tabs before I swim. My diet is very low sodium, so maybe that could help? Any other suggestions? |

If your diet is low sodium, you may want to add back in some electrolytes from other sources like sports drink. I use the NUUN tablets in water and it gives you some of the electrolytes without the calories. The other thing you could do is not push off the wall as hard. That usually is when I get the cramps. Although I have never eliminated them, those are what I do to minimize them. Good blog this week Becky. BTW, there is a thunderstorm headed your way if it isn't there yet. It just left here! |

Yes, the cramps do happen most often when pushing off the wall. I am working on my flip turns, and I'm not very consistent with where or how I hit the wall with my feet, so that is definitely something I'll take into consideration. And yes, the storm is here! Looks like nighttime outside my office window. Hopefully it moves out of here before my run clinic tonight! I don't mind running in the rain, but I am afraid of lightening! Hopefully the weather isn't ruining your vacation. It was really nice weather yesterday. |

So far the weather hasnt been an issue at all and compared to home it has been great! Today we were going to lay low and hang out by the pool, but plans may have to change! Have a good run tonight! |

Veteran 253 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED bdenehy - 2013-03-18 4:00 PM Glad to see everyone doing so well with training and overall fitness/health. I'm getting in my runs (most of them) but not much in the bike/swim departments. I'm feeling a little anxious about first race this Saturday. Its only a sprint duathlon, but I'm usually a baby about biking under 40F, and right now it looks like it will be mid to upper 20s, burrr. We'll see what putting on/taking off booties does to my T1 and T2 times i guess... Hope you have a great vacation Ken! Yikes! I'd be anxious about biking in the 20s too!! That's my "happy" run threshold, & it feels WARMER when you run, but even COLDER when you bike. I'm such a baby when it comes to biking in cold weather, anything over 50F & I'm good. Good luck, hope the forecast improves! The 1st day of Spring & it's 19F here (about 20 degrees below normal). It's supposed to be below normal all week & weekend, & probably snow . I'm hoping it's the last of it! Becky, I occasionally get foot cramps when doing long swims. Usually it's not too bad, & I don't have to stop. I'll move my foot around while swimming & if I push off harder from the wall with the crampy foot it gets better (which it that's what's causing it for you then it might not help). I like the Nuun too. Especially when it gets warmer I'll drink them during the day (but usually halve them). |

Becky, I get the cramps too when kicking off the wall hard. When I swim a lot I get them less. It's just what your'e used to I guess. |

Sometimes I will have toe cramps that cause the toes to kink at crazy angles and looks horrible. Sorry, no advice on how to fix them. I usually use the pull buoy and try to relax and stretch the foot. Calf cramps I have to stop and rub them out. It is a major pain in the butt! Great job to everyone on their workouts - it really inspires me to get mine done! |

I have never been to Texas so this will be a new experience. I gave up on the Adamo saddle. After trying to make if work three different times over two years, enough is enough. I might have found a saddle that actually works. It is a Selle Italia. As soon as I tried it at the bike shop on the trainer I immediately knew it was coming home with me. Hopefully I will still feel the same after sitting on it for a couple of hours. I hope everyone is having a good week! |

CLOSED Doing well getting my S/B/R training in, the place we are staying has a half mile loop around a pond that worked well for my Wednesday speed work day. We don't do short repeats, but just a couple of miles in the middle of the run at T pace. Off to ride this morning, a bit cool but better than at home! Happy training everyone! |

Oh how I would love to be out there with them! I am getting pretty tired of the trainer. Temps here are warming up and the sun is warm enough to start melting the snow/ice. I am hoping for an early breakup so I can get out by Mid April. Then it will be all the gravel to worry about! |

Member 258 | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED It's my testing week again, and my results are mixed. Swim test today went well and I took another 2.5 seconds/100 off my 1000 yard time trial. It's really fun to look back to my first test about a year ago and realize that I've taken off almost 20 seconds/100 since then! However, I did my run test yesterday (a 5K time trial) and I was over a minute slower since my test in February, with basically the same max and average heart rate. So the way I am interpreting that is that I ran slower for the same effort. I'm not getting too worked up about this, I had a tiring weekend at work which could have affected my results, but I was also wondering if this is just normal after a period of base training. I've been doing a lot of long, slower runs and just barely starting to do speedwork now. Any thoughts? |

Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED RunningJoke - 2013-03-21 9:46 PM That's great work on your swim times. I think you are right not to get worked up about 1 minute in a 5k TT. Given all the random factors that an affect any given run, I'd say :20/mile is in a reasonable range to fall in without questioning fitness. Of course, take anything I say on threshold testing witha grain of salt. I don't test swim or run outside of races. Threshold testing is hard, mentally, making it even harder to do "right". I couldn't agree with Bill more! 5k's are a finicky beast. A PR takes countless random factors falling into place at the same time. A minute isn'y all that much, or :20/mile as Bill pointed out. It could be consequence of different course, tired legs, nutrition, wind, temperature, you just weren't mentally with it, etc...etc.... Just go out and give it your best shot next time.
Don't underestimate your swim improvement! 2 seconds/100 is a HUGE deal! Congrats!! Edited by Meulen 2013-03-22 8:19 AM |

Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Good luck racing Becky and Kathleen! It turns out that I am totally scattered these days. I've been planning on doing a sprint duathlon this Saturday. I even scheduled something I need to do in NYC for Saturday after the race. Lucky my wife pays attention.... The race is on Sunday. Really not a big deal except that I absolutely would have showed up with my bike and gear like a knucklehead bright and early tomorrow, an hour and a half from home. I need to pull it together before race season really starts. It's not that big of a deal but it messes with my schedule. The plan was to do my long run on Sunday, maybe a little slower if I'm hurting from the short race. Now its either skip the long run (bad for the marathon plan) or do it on Saturday and race tired on Sunday. I'll most likely go with option B and not worry about how I do on this race. the May race is more important to me and I'm expecting to get crushed on the bike portion this weekend anyway. Not doing any biking hasn't been really good for my biking |

As a reminder, I am new to running any distances longer that 1 miles. last year was the first year that I ran consistently... Anyway, it seems as if my time is always the same 8:30 to 8:45 Mile. Today, I ran on the local trail which is slightly downhill on the way out and of course, you come back uphill. I was running very comfortably on the way out for 3 miles and averaged 7:50 mile. I knew it would be hard to match that coming back, but set a heart rate that I new would be pushing it, but I could finish. I ended up finishing at 8:00 mile average for the entire run. I feel like I was able to better understand my body during the run. Not breaking any records, but for me, I was very happy. Tomorrow I hope to get a 40 or so mile bike ride and 8 mile run on Sunday.. next week is a recovery week which I am looking forward to already... |
