The left brifter on my road bike no longer works.  I think I broke it when fitting it into my trunk a few months ago.  I've been trying to fiddle with it, but it no longer ratchets.  I'm not sure whether or not I should try to find a used set or just go with a cheap Nashbar or Forte set.  They are Tiagara so pretty low-end.

The crazy thing is that you can't!  There is a set for almost $80 and that's about it.  There are some random sellers that sell individual ultegra shifters for about $30 or so.

Good news - bad news.

Good news - 2nd time out on the new bike....and 1st time riding my 6/20 sprint course, I rode the fastest I've ever ridden.  I don't actually attribute that much of it to the course.  I rode, hard.  I was riding with a buddy who's an accomplished rider (and he could have easily dropped me at almost any point).  He KILLED me.  I've been saying how I want to hammer the bike leg of my sprints.....and hang on for the run.  I NOW know that's not a great idea.  See the bad news.

Bad news - I BONKED HARD on my brick.  The ride took almost everything out of me.  I had no idea.  We set up a 2mi. brick run, and I had to walk up the 2 hills on the 2mi..  NOT a good idea (that strategy).

I'll learn from it, though.  Change of goal for my 1st, next weekend.  I'm treating it, now, as a learning experience, instead of a chance to go "all-out".  The bike course, next weekend, will be less challenging than the one I did, today.  But, I'm still gonna have to learn to leave more in the tank.

Learning experience.  Nothing more.

p.s. I am dead tired.....lol.  Today is actually the 1st day I've ever swim/bike/run in the same day.

Whoa....I hate to say it, but you're right!  I just checked.  I would put a WTB on the classifieds section.  Someone has to have something laying around.  Or, just call shimano and ask them what to do.

I don't see how this is bad news. better to do it now than bonk on the race and be super dissapointed. I agree w/ the great learning experience. Go a smidge slower on the bike and nail the run! Also, how was your hydration/nutrition - could that of effected your run???

Honestly, the bike was only 12mi.  We did it in less than 40min. and I was so concerned with keeping up, I didn't have time to drink anything!.....lol

I drank some G2 before we took off to run.  I ate well, during the day.

It was hot.  But, I wasn't dehydrated, prior....and for an hour's worth of exercise, I should be able to do that on no water (I think).  I just went a tad hard on the bike.  It was a full mph faster than I've ever avg'd.

I have to share this as I think it is funny.  My hubby is big into both road and mountain biking.  Before I started training for triathlons he refused to ever think about taking something like gu, shotblocs, etc... for fuel - said they didn't work and were gross (even though he never tried them).  Gatorade - and that is it.  Well, now he is depleting my stash and telling me how well they work - duh!

Nice pace on that ride! I agree with Robin, better that it happen to you now than on race day.

You're lucky you have someone to ride with that can really push you like that.

Hey....Good luck to all of you guys/gals racing (and training) this weekend!  I've got a brick scheduled for this afternoon (I hope to do this one, right!), then only runs for the weekend.  I'm taking my wife to the beach for a few days.

Give 'em hell!

I just got back from an exhausting 51mile ride.  I logged the details.  I finished in 3:05.  The graph from my PT is:https://www.trainingpeaks.com/sw/BAWJDQMF6GF5SAHU6IHBTXEN64

I still haven't found my FTP yet, but for this ride I was trying to stay right around 130watts.  It wasn't hot out for most of the ride which is why my HR was in Z1 when I was working much harder.  Later though, my HR was pretty dang high.

I'm still looking at my graphs of everything but I can't really judge much because I don't know my FTP.  The whole ride was pancake flat, so it wasn't too hard to try to keep my power around 130.

I also racked up my largest bike volume this week at 7.15hrs with 120.4miles.  I might do a short recovery ride this weekend but other than that I want to take the rest of the weekend off of the bike to recover enough to test my FTP on Monday.

A couple?  I wish you the best of luck!  Lately, I've made huge progress on just forcing my body to ride longer.  I think I want to utilize my PT now and just work on going harder for longer.  I think I can do that well with several 20-40 miles rides each week and probably throw in a long 3hr/50mile ride every other week.

On my ride earlier I didn't consume much nutrition.  I at almost an entire Hot N' Ready yesterday so I guess I carbo loaded prior.  I ate 1 banana pre-ride, 1 clif bar, aero drink of water, approx 16oz of Gatorade Pro.  About 340cals total.

I weighed myself before and after and lost 4lbs during the ride.

Yeah...my group ride has been going longer these days.  You'll be surprised how quickly your body can acclimate to the miles.  It was only about 6 months ago that I was only doing one weekend ride of about 28 miles.

This week will be my highest bike volume week...probably about 155-160 miles.  If I have any chance in participating in the 112 mile race in the beginning of September, I'm going to have to ramp up the miles big time.  I drew out a rough plan...and it doesn't look pretty.  I need to get in about 600 miles in June, 700 in July, and about 750 in August.  I think my chances of entering is about 40% right now...but either way it will be a good base building for the HIM I have planned next season.

That would get you some serious saddle time and you would probably become such a better cyclist.

Something like that would be great for me but I just can't bare to get myself to do it Tongue out

It's great to hear everyone's training is going well!  Any races this weekend?

One problem that I am having (and it seems pretty common with all of us at one time or another) is time in the saddle.  It seems every time I have a big ride scheduled (>20 miles) something comes up and I have to either skip it or reduce the volume.  The wind is partly to blame (I wont ride if wind is greater than 30 mph!) and the other is not a whole lot of long rides around here w/o putting in some serious elevation gainage. oh well - I am working on it!

Going hiking in the mountains tomorrow and then have like 3 bbqs on my plate for the weekend. yummmm!

Nc452010 - love the avatar! Embarassed Have fun at the beach!

Sounds to me like both of you are going to be animals on the bike legs for your races this year.  I am trying to build base as well but it might take me a bit longer because my longest races are going to be Oly's.  I am already almost twice the required distance on my longer rides (42.5 miles).

Carl, I looked at your chart, it might as well have been in Russian.  I am not sure what I was looking at but then I don't know anything about the power meters either.  As much as I would like to learn I don't have a good reason to research.  If I researched I'd want one and I don't think that would fly with the budget for a while.

I buy my GU from RoadRunnerSports.com.  I got VIP membership for $2 (annual?) which gives you 10% off everything and free shipping.  I order GU by the case (24 gels), and it comes out to about $22...or less than $1 each.

Carl, congrats on the PT. Congrats on all the PR's! I've been on following and reading up on everything, just been lurking around. Looks like everyone is getting some nice training in. I'm finally getting my training groove on, last week I hit 137 miles on the bike. Goal is to hit 100+ miles every week.

It is getting HOT here. 95+ which I don't mind on the bike (as long as I am properly hydrated) but running in the heat has been a whipping. Oh well, just need to suck it up and get my body acclimated.

On tap this weekend, lots of training AND playing 60 mile bike tomorrow, OWS and ride, possibly run on Sunday, and swim and run on Monday. Hope everyone has a great and safe Memorial Weekend.

To help set up my race for a couple of weeks I did a back-to-back brick today.  Everything seemed to be going good for the first 3.5 miles until I had a flat tire on a corner.  I almost lost it and laid the bike over but I kept it on the wheels and stopped as soon as I could.  I noticed the tire was a little low but didn't think it was THAT low and it didn't seem to losing air either.  I suppose the added pressure going around the corner pushed the reaming air out or something.  Then it took me to long to change it because I thought I would change it a "faster way."  It didn't work!

I did find some things to both work on and things that worked well.  I plan to bike with my HR in the upper 140's and back it down to the mid 140's with about a mile or so left, take my shoes off while on the bike (which I practiced today), and I got some speed laces in my shoes to help things in T2.  I had a T2 time of about 45 seconds but this was just taking off my helmet, a gulp of water and putting shoes on before taking off.  It felt like a decent time but I really don't have a baseline to go with.

I am planning a 9 mile run tomorrow and the an OWS of about 1000 yds. in my brothers pond again.  I think this week's should go better than last week because I will have a better idea what to expect.  i will also warm up some before the swim, which is something I didn't do last week.

You want to race Kona...move to Hawaii!

I just saw the people State of Hawaii (non big island) residents who are trying to qualify for Kona at next weekends Hawaii 70.3.  There is one spot for every AG.

The list is fairly short.  13 people in my current M25-29 AG...not saying I could beat these guys...and 18 in the 30-34 AG which I will be in next year when I do attempt this race.  There are only 3 people eligible for the M50-54 slot.

If you're a female...even better.

It's no additional cost to apply for these additional Hawaii resident slots...but granted only the fast guys probably enter.  So while I would still need to post a fast time...it's not out of the relm of possibility that I could race Kona...one day.

You do need to prove that you are a Hawaii resident for at least 3 years (using your W-2 forms or other government documents) to be eligible.

Think you can beat these guys???  http://www.ironman703hawaii.com/10KonaStateQualList.pdf

Better yet...move to the Big Island, and your competition thins out even more...http://www.ironman703hawaii.com/10KonaBIQualList.pdf

Just thought I'd share.
