Actually I used that on my bike last ride except I paraphrased it to "just keep spinning" to get up the "slight incline" I was on. I'm thinking I really need to work on hills, lol.

Good idea to have a mantra when you're doing something tough!  My husband bribed me by saying if I stopped using the granny gears then he'd get me a tri bike.  So all this year I repeated (out loud) "Tri bike, tri bike, tri bike" and it worked well!  Except... I didn't get the bike. =( BUT, I had the fastest bike average I've ever had in a race at my tri in July. =)

Curt -- OWS....my recommendation (based on my experience) is to get in the water and just get comfortable. Don't necessarily swim, just get comfortable. Try to exhale with your face in the water. Do some breast stroke, or just float on your back. Slowly try to do a crawl stroke, and if you need to, roll over on your back to breath. Your comfort with it will come, it just takes a bit of practice. My first race I had the total freak out. My first race this year, I almost had a bit of a freak out during warm ups, but I caught myself, and just stopped. Took a breath, and went back at it. Last race? Didn't even thing about -- just thought about swimming.

Today's topic -- its tough getting old.  Had some knee area pain last night (more like knee area muscle soreness) and woke up this AM with it still there. Enought that I bailed on my bike/run brick plans for the morning. Will try it tonight, but what the heck? These bizarro random, seemingly unknown origin pains are a real drag .

Awesome advice, Mike.  It makes a greater impact coming from someone who's been there before.

That's a bummer about bailing on your workout.  Like any good athlete, I'm sure you'll check it out with your Dr if it persists! =)

On the getting old topic, I feel your pain -- pun fully intended!!!  One of the hardest things about sticking to the schedules I make is when my body says "no".  I've been trying to figure out how to balance wanting to improve, wanting to use the tri training for health, and wanting to avoid getting hurt.  Struggling now with whether I should stick with what I have been doing (which is awesome for my health!), increase distance, or increase intensity.  We'll see.

Hang in there and keep training.  At least we're still upright and doing better than all of those folks on the couch!

Good insight Curt.

Aches and pains are tough to decipher, too.  That's why I have aquajogging as my back up training or the elliptical.  These feel easier to me.  If I get in the water to aquajog or if I hop on the elliptical and it hurts, then I'm more convinced there's a problem.  If I can do it without pain then it was just my body groaning. =) Any easier activity you have in mind that you could try as your backup?

What happened to the tri bike? lol. Great work on the fast bike average. I'm finally starting to get a hang of the gears - I just need to work out how the shifter thing on the ohter handlebar works, lol.

I'm looking at getting to 200m this month and continuing the agressive c25k program with the beginner exercise program to build up my biking.

The question is:

Do I stay at the 200m mark and continue to work on the bike and running stuff or should I continue building my swim base - for instance using the beginner swim program - which works up to 750 while doing the other stuff.

If I keep working for 3 months at everything with the beginner programs I'll end up with:

running no probs - I'll have already done a 5k about a month before anyway

biking: 75- 80 mins

swim - 750m.

I think Johanne may have made a comment about the bike/run... your cardio fitness on land is built by the combination of these two sports, so it's why a lot of triathletes don't stress about getting run volume in-because bike training is helping by increasing your cardiovascular system's capabilities and preventing injury from excessive running.

So... this is why I think it's okay to continue working on building that swim.

From my observations... when people get tired on a bike, they just pedal easier.  When people get tired on the run, they start to walk.  When people get tired on the swim, they start doing sidestroke or breaststroke, which is fine, but (correct me, group, if I'm wrong here) it's more stressful for the athlete and the people on the swim course trying to protect/keep you safe when athletes have to resort to other forms of swimming.

So, bike fitness will likely improve your overall time the best, but swim fitness will improve your overall safety the best.  I hope that makes sense?

I forgot what your swim distance is for the race... is it 750m?  Try to build up from swimming 200m without stopping to 250 then 300 then up to 500. 500 yards or 500 meters seems to be the magical point where sprint distance athletes can be okay as their longest swim before an open water swim in a race.  Keep in mind, when you do a longer non-stop distance for the first time, it's more important to go slow enough where you don't have to stop then to keep a pace that forces you to stop on the wall.  It's very, very important not to stop on the wall when you're building endurance (some people even turn before they touch the wall, have you tried that yet?).

Definitely add 25/50 yard drill work around your continuous swims, too, to help with technique.

=)

The swim distance is 200m - it's a mini-sprint. I haven't tried turning before the wall yet but I pretty much grab, turn, and push off again. I would like to go over distance on the swimming so I know I can do it though. I still need to find somewhere I can do OWS too. The last time I went anywhere near it I freaked and that was just from jumping in to the water.

I actually think I could probably build to the sprint swim distance - 500m - but I'm going for the mini due to the bike leg - that's the one I seem to have the most trouble with right now.

I think once I decided to go for school in New Zealand, he decided it wasn't a good idea to buy one since I'd have to pay to bring it over with me.

Good luck with shifting!  It took me soooo long to get the hang of it.  I think the hardest part was figuring out to shift going up a hill before I actually thought I needed to.

Gotcha.  For a 200m swim, I think it's very reasonable to work on getting to the 400-500m point.  That way you're not taxing yourself too much during the swim in the race so that you have extra energy for that bike leg. =)

Light Up The Sky – Van Halen

Animal – Nickelback

Feel So Numb – Rob Zombie

Edge of Glory – Lady Gaga

China Grove – Doobie Brothers

Paparazzi – Lady Gaga

Uh oh, that's a pretty short play list!  I can round it out since I have all sorts of music.  Keep the suggestions for our groups playlist coming!  I think it'll be a fun memento of this summer, after the group is done.

Ok that makes sense. Maybe he could get you an accessory for your current bike which you'd be taking to NZ anyway.

Thanks for the swim advice. That's sort of what I was thinking. I'm trying to find a localish tri-group to get in some OWS practice and maybe get some bike pointers. The true local ones are still beyond my abilities right now.

 As for the playlist:

Can I add the "Chariots of fire" and "Benny Hill" themes?

I had the first going through my head today (probably because I'd just watched it) and when I used to listed to the latter during my walks it would always make me go faster.

Kate - Glad the practice tri went well.

Oh and I found that stretching before running makes my calves not scream at me due to a break I had to take for nature reasons today which split my run in 2 so I'm thinking I may start to incorporate it in to my warm up routine.

Ok, here's a few more (direct from my own 'workout playlist')

Get on the Good Foot - James Brown

Heading out to the Highway - Judas Priest

Why Go - Pearl Jam

All Down The Line - Rolling Stones

Beautiful - Snoop Dogg

One way Out - Allman Brothers

Good swim this AM. Another 2000 yards. Need to get back to run/bike. I've ditched the last 2 days due to my knee region hurting, but today its feeling better. Probably an hour on the trainer tonight.

I'll scan my playlist this PM for some additional ideas.

Going to get back at it today as I've been a bum the last few days after the tri.  Have my final even the weekend after next and am really looking forward to it.  Did it last year and it's well run with an easy course.  Couple that with being 10 minutes from my house and my excitement level is building!

ETA:

Paradise by the Dashboard Light - Meatloaf

Songs About Me - Trace Adkins

I Feel Lucky - Mary Chapin Carpenter

Red Rag Top - Tim McGraw

Good luck with your last event Curt.

got my first "almost continuous 150m" in today. I had to stop on lap 3 (it was meant to be a 75) but saw that I was very close to "the point of no return" (aka the middle of the pool) so I sucked it up and kept going then didn't stop. Looks like the swim distance for my tri should be in the bag well before race day. Next up is a trial ride to the pool and back in preparation of doing some brick work.

p.s. I love Paradise by the Dashboard Light and I love dancing to it at weddings... my husband (that I drag to the dance floor) doesn't enjoy it one bit. Haha!

The weekend is here!  HURRAY!!!

I am scheduled to take my first hot air balloon ride tonight!!  We have an annual balloon fest and a friend is taking me on her ride that she won.  Only problem is the t-storms in our weather forecast for the afternoon. =(

Thanks for posting the songs, I've been adding them to a playlist.  Once I hit 20 songs I'll PM everyone to ask for your mailing address and get those out to you this month. =)

Have a great weekend!

Hot air balloon rides are GREAT! I did one in Sedona, AZ about 15 years ago, and it was spectacular. Incredibly quiet & peaceful (except when they fire the burner!).

Finally got off my backside and got back to exercising.  Headed out for a run after work.  27:54 for 3.4 miles.  Check points were 9:42, 4:16, 4:13, 9:42!  Effort was slightly harder than normal, but body felt great.  Was a little more winded at the end of this effort.  Checked my PR and it's at 27:51, so this was definitely a good effort / I'm pleased with the run!

Thanks. I'm going to try 150 truly continuous next week.

Are you sure you're willing to pay the mail costs to send stuff to me, lol

Hope the balloon ride goes well.

I'm starting to toy with the idea of doing the sprint distance at race 5 of the tri-series my mini-sprint is race 1 of. It's in the same location so it'd bring me full circle. The distances for that are 750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run - it's in late march which would give me about 20 weeks between them.

GOOD EVENING EVERYONE!!!

Tomorrow is my third tri! Its basically the same as the last one, but this time I have my inhaler! My coach has me aiming for a finish of 2 hours or less (Last time I finished at 2:54)--Strangely enough, I think I can at least get close to that time--Truthfully, I will be happy if I finish faster than the bottom ten overall! Laughing--that would be my best finish!

Anyway, wish me luck, off I goooooo!!!!!

You'll do great -- was showing a co-worker our group the other day and told her about all your gains and how much fun it is to be part of a group like this.  I'll be watching for the race report!

ETA -- 17 mile ride this AM in the rain with a group of guys I met.  First time I've ridden in the rain and it was not bad.  Actually really nice to be in cool weather for a change.  Only challenge was when the lead guy started to push through an intersection and then backed off -- I locked up the bike and went in to a lovely fish tail.  Fortunately I saved it and got unclipped, but there were certainly a few moments of fear there!
